Description Here is a tutorial showing the process of shoe painting that I use.
I hope you like it and find it useful! n_n

The final shoe: [link]

Notes:
1. You don't have to paint white shoes, you can just give any colour shoes a few coats of white paint as a base before doing the rest.
2. You don't have to use acrylic - fabric paint or permanent markers should work as well, this is just one method.
3. "I have a pair of high top chucks I did in Prismacolor markers. I found markers work well, then spray lightly over the top with hair-spray and it protects it. Again, can't get them wet though." From ~Girl-Of-Roses-Hanna

Edit:
OMG!! A DD? Wow, I'm honored.

Yes, do! I hope yours turn out well C:
Your choice. I tried to water down the acrylic with another pair and it bled a little, this pair I didn't water it down, but if the paint start drying then some water helps. It's finding the right balance between putting on too thick of a layer and bleeding.

One question...
Could you recommend a good type of shoes to paint on?
Thanks again <3

I recommend canvas shoes like vans or converse, or even canvas ballet flats. No shiny materials. Also, vans are easy because they have a big flat area to work on! C:

nice one! at the end of the tutorial, you said to spray the shoes with a protection spray thats waterproof, exactly wat type do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toasts In reply to KaciHPfanatic [2009-02-02 20:07:06 +0000 UTC]

Well I went to a local hardware store and asked a shop-man what sort of spray I could use on painted shoes and just used what he gave me. I have heard of an artist using a matte wood lacquer. That is to make sure the paint stays on and doesn't crack/peel/come off. After that you can always put some waterproof shoes spray stuff that is sold at shoe stores and is generally good for making sure shoes keep well C:

Whooo! I love you now and thanks a bunches!
Now I can go and buy some cheap canvas shoes and stick 'em with my interests!

Seriously, I could prolly go to some thrift shop or some cheap store that sells canvas shoes for dirt cheap. Lol!

Yes, I think that is the best part of making your own shoes, that you do not have to pay very much money and no one else has the same shoes.
Shoes from a thrift store would be awesome because you are also recycling! Too bad there are no thrift stores where I live ;-;

I bought this pair of shoes at New Yorker, it is a European clothing store. But it is possible to paint any canvas shoe, like Vans or Converse! C:

Lilianne In reply to ??? [2008-12-21 11:39:44 +0000 UTC]

hmm.. can I use copic markers for this??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toasts In reply to Lilianne [2008-12-21 12:18:36 +0000 UTC]

Well I looked at the FAQ on the copic markers website, and they say that you can use them for textiles but they might bleed if a drink is spilled on them or if they are washed. So I think they would be okay, as long as you get a good lacquer to cover it to make sure there is no damage done if they get wet n_n

These are made of cotton. I think cotton/canvas works best, I have not tried leather. But I think permanent markers work on leather too! n_n

dude. if im going to draw on my shoes using the markers only (black and white), would i still need the lacquer thingy? or is it alright if i just draw on them, then dont do anything else after?

thanks dude.

Toasts In reply to magtanggol [2008-11-04 18:48:43 +0000 UTC]

If you use waterproof markers, then it should be fine as it is. If you use textile markers then you should follow the instructions for sealing the colour. But you don't need the lacquer.

Perfect!
Thanks for sharing!

A friend of mine told me to use "acetone" as water with acrylics so that it won't crack. I don't know if it is true though..

I'm not sure about acetone, but mixing the paint with textile medium should also prevent cracking C:

Thanks n_n

For mine I usually pick a theme and then I browse the internet to get images and inspiration for the design. Then I draw a few detailed images and fill up the rest of the space with random shapes, clouds, flowers, happy faces, rainbows, food. Anything works C:
