Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
I'm writing this for the series of three artworks, because the full impact only comes by taking them together.
The vision of contrasting a barren and rocky landscape with just one animal in it with an iconic building is very powerful. It implies that, no matter how monumental the edifice, ultimately, it too shall be outlived by the planet. And yet, the grandeur is not fully surrendered. The shell of the building is still lit up at some levels. The human impulse to better the circumstances still prevails.
It's totally original. I've never seen anything close in concept.
As usual, the technique is flawless. There is a murky moonlight, with strange and wonderful moons, dim and flattened by a haze; including a very dark eclipsing body in two of the pictures, which almost looks like a hole in the moon it covers.
The animals are positioned naturally, with power, health and grace, yet they are alert to the viewer. This sets up a dialogue with the landscape. In each picture, there is a dominant, gloomy colour. There is also a splash of flaming light, but it serves to underscore its rarity in the world of the picture. The resources are limited, even if the keepers of the light are stubborn and will not yield to the darkness of the world.
There is a hint that there will not be any daylight. This is the brightest this world will give. It will wear down, wear out, or simply jut through the best people can do.
It's very high impact. I cannot stay unmoved. I don't know if the overpowering and sheer power of this world will prevail, or the buildings and whatever makes them will. I cannot decide if the two are even set against each other or are complementary. Is it for good or not? But there is an optimism and groundedness that is reassuring.
This is a series I will come back to, from time to time.
