I don't want to be discoured from sharing my hard work because of a few individuals with thieving tendencies, don't ruin this for me. Thanks.

Edit III Dear mother of God, over 1000 faves, thankyou deviantArt!! I think there'll be a part 2 coming soon to this tutorial that was never meant to be a part 1...

Edit II Wow over 600 faves! Thankyou so much I rarely get over 10 faves on my work, I guess deviantArt loves Tutorials.

Edit Loads of people have been really lovely about this tutorial, I'd love to thank everyone individually but that wouldn't be possible so... Thanks for all the support.
If you use the tutorial send me a link and I'll give you any more advice I think you might need.

I'd just like to say this is a beginner's tutorial and this is the method for colouring I used, which served me in good stead whilst I learnt about digital painting, there are other, much better tutorials on deviantArt which can show you more advanced methods of painting.

I made this for myself, so that I had some skin swatches to hand. Then I got ahead of myself and well... here it is.
I'm happy to answer questions.

That's nice, it's a step up from flat colouring for sure! If I were to give some advice, I suggest trying out using more pronounced/hard shadows, maybe one side of the shadow is blended but the other not, so where you've used an outline the shadow is hard but as it gets further from that is softens. Just a suggestion, hope it helps.

ash-to-ashes [2014-03-25 19:44:33 +0000 UTC]

You are amazing- thanks for sharing this! It's so incredibly helpful!

I do still struggle with one thing as far as shadows and highlights go...I've been beaten about the head with the idea that shadows and highlights should never be just the lighter or darker shades of whatever skin tone you're painting.. Most recently I was told that one should be a warmer tone, and one should be cooler (i.e., the shadows are cooler, the highlights warmer, or vice versa). What's your take on that??

Great tutorial, again!

OH! How do you choose lip color??

Cheers!

TobyFoxArt In reply to ash-to-ashes [2014-03-25 21:52:13 +0000 UTC]

Firstly thank you for such a lovely comment!

In terms of shadows and highlights, yes you're right. A cool light source will produce a warm shadow and a warm light source will produce a cool shadow. The best tutorial on this explains it hereΒ fav.me/d5bi80o and if you really want to learn I suggest Colour and Light by James Gurney. With these swatches I suggest selecting the darkest shadow tone and on a new layer fill the selection with blue and set the layer to soft light 50% opacity. Do the same with the next darkest tone but at 30% and once more on the next darkest at 10%. This is assuming your light source is orange. Shadows will usually be the opposite colour of the light source, so a green light makes red shadows etc. The background colour and reflected light also affects the shadow tone.Β

I suggest for further reading you look atΒ fav.me/d2dwqgc as well.

Here's some of my paintings where the effect is obviousΒ fav.me/d5ttyel (green lightsource)Β fav.me/d7b3dag (pale yellow light source)Β fav.me/d5ugz0x (multiple)Β

Good luck and please feel free to send me a link to anything you've done and I'll look and give further advice or perhaps just applause. I look forward to your creations!

I'm white myself and I really only have my own skin for reference, so when I made these it would've been ridiculous not to do other skin colours.Β

Thank you for your appreciation and taking the time to comment.
