EDIT - for something I made quickly to help me sister, which she ignored BTW, this has exploded, I'm so happy and grateful, in the first day I got over 1000 faves, I'd love to thank every one individually but it's way too much for me so sorry, but again thanks you've all put a BIG smile on my face
Don't share without my permission this is for dA only.
If you've found it helpful tell me and please show me, I'd love to see, and if you've any questions just ask and I'll do my best to help as soon as possible.

Great tutorial. But how do I go about understanding lightning when it comes to full body? Like wearing clothes and stuff. Especially, when I am drawing imaginary creatures.

Take photographs, find references, look in the mirror, look at nature, watch how light works and remember. If you start to build a collection of mental references you'll learn how to correctly light anything and everything. The process is a long one though, don't expect to do it in a weekend.

Well, I'm trying to pencil shade a person with asian and a person with white skin. I don't know much on shading on skin tones so any advice is good.

TobyFoxArt In reply to YokoNakajima [2013-03-04 19:36:10 +0000 UTC]
In lighter skin the contrast between shadows and the midtone is higher and highlights blend more smoothly, the opposite is true for darker skin. The best thing to do is find some good references.

when you mean by higher you mean the shadows and midtone much more closer to one another while the shdows are darker and the midtones are inbetween?

sorry, I mean before doing shading and highlighting a need base and than shadowing but I was asking was midtone is base and the highlights are closest to the bases color?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TobyFoxArt In reply to YokoNakajima [2013-08-08 22:49:27 +0000 UTC]
The midtone is the base of the painting then add shadows to show the shape and finish with highlights to define it.

With portraits I like it so I can make sure I get the face down correctly. Most people like the guide lines I don't. I find them a hinderance I can look at a face and just can feel what it should be. After 8 years you just get a feel. I do grid if I have a hole body and more than a bust so I can get the proportions for the body down and than I will go back in and free hand the face reference marks I made.

Just shadowed all over the face with some rim lighting around the hair.
