Description Well I sincerely hope you guys aren't sick of these yet.

Not that I don't like answering everyone's questions, but it does get a little time consuming, so I hope this solves some mysteries if you were wondering!

Do you usually started from pencil sketch and progress onto the PC these days?

I remembered your Harry Potter pieces, it was the days you did full digital work.

They both have their advantages, it is nice to see you combine them both.

Everything up until I scan the paintings is done traditionally. All sketching planning etc--- the second half is then entirely digital.

Yeah exclusively one or the other doesn't seem to really be hitting the spot for me these days, I keep trying to find new ways to integrate!

Your work is so innovative and inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to share your process with us all. :> You're totally right, photoshop is not cheating is just another method. Just like rotoscoping isn't cheating in animation, it's just another solution to a problem.

I have a very dumb question. What does receeding mean? First time I see that word : D

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

toerning In reply to ZEBES [2011-01-23 20:11:08 +0000 UTC]

Well for one thing I spelled it wrong, it's just "receding." Ugh. but it means like fading away...retreating. Moving back. Most commonly found in the phrase "receding hairline" haha

You know what.... I was thinking that this could work in a animated sort of thing. Arf I forgot the name of that technique, if there's any.

So, no, never tired of these, because of how inspirational your work is in general ! Thank you for your dedication.

This is super awesome and I actually all stages, but I have to say the image in step 5 looks the most attractive by far. It's got just the right amount of realism, and it feels like I'm actually looking at the characters, as opposed to the final version, where they look photographed, due to the blurred out background. It's a thing to consider, I guess, if you want to bring the viewer in the same room as them. I'm not a big fan of the cropping either. In the earlier versions, the fact that the ceiling was visible actually made the room smaller (I can't explain why), and they looked more "trapped" than in the final version.

But you've got a very creative technique going on here I like that it's repeatable. I occasionally stumble on things that look good, but it's usually impossible to use the same trick twice (I blame the lack of artistic education)

toerning In reply to GreenSprite [2011-01-23 19:40:34 +0000 UTC]

It's interesting to hear different opinions, because a lot of the things you mentioned in a critique capacity were intentional choices. I agree with you, that step 5 feels the most tangible-- because we can choose to focus our eyes at whatever depth in real life, a fully sharp illustration seems the most natural to look at, whereas I am intentionally trying to capture a photographic or film-like aesthetic.
My use of the word "trapped" was a little misplaced, really I just wanted the fisherman to look really big and oafish, and with that much space around him, it wasn't quite working for me.

Thanks for your input, though, and in the same spirit of friendly suggestions I hope you don't mind if I say it might be worth it to consider your word choice a little more carefully. To say you prefer a certain thing one way is fine and I love to hear why, but saying that something other than the image I chose to make is the "most attractive by far" could be interpreted a little in the wrong direction. Don't want to put you in the spotlight, just something to consider.

Oh, oops, I think I see what you mean. English is not my native language, and I mess up on the finer aspects sometimes (and not only). I was just talking about my personal preference/opinion, not critiquing, but now that I read my comment again, I can see my intent was not obvious. I am in no way stating that image 5 is somehow better than image 6. Actually, I really like the final image too, but I felt a stronger connection to that other one and that's what I wanted to express. I'm really sorry the message didn't come out right.

Never. Ever. Forget the arm hair. It is like the greatest thing since sliced bread, dontchaknow?

Love these things, it's great to see how far you can get with either medium (or how you can try to get one medium look like another).

there's a wonderful feel about traditional and digital work being combined, the rougher textures of watercolours pop against the digitally created parts
and really- I doubt anyone could be sick of seeing your process work ;]- it's quite an eye opener and very informative- I've never attempted creating a colour key before and seeing how effective it was here has definitely spurred me to do so
wonderful work as always!
