Description At 6'4" and full of muscle I would have thought he was from the Land Down Under. But Tom was a Swede with flawless English and an unmistakable accent. He walked into my studio in Hollywood one day and told me he'd heard I did good pictures of guys. Gulp. At just six feet I was looking up and so distracted by his mane of thick blonde hair that I forgot to answer. I was used to beautiful people coming my way but Tom was different; he wasn't so much beautiful as he was powerful and manly and completely self-assured. I invited him to have a seat and we talked. I asked him if he was a competitive bodybuilder and he laughed and said he had no part of that. And went on to explain that he had to be careful about working out too much or he quickly got too big and couldn't fit into his clothes. Offhand I thought of a few guys who'd hate him for that.

Our first and only shoot was on the beach in Malibu at Point Dume where he wandered into the surf that day as if the big waves forming behind him and crashing against him were of no consequence. We had planned on doing nudes but ended up being in full view of the homes up on the cliff so his clothes stayed on. Both of us were happy with the pictures that were shot on 35mm Ektachrome - we peered at them through a loop on the light table and eventually some of them got printed and made their way into my portfolio. Tom disappeared and I never heard from him again - an Adonis who walked out of my professional life as mysteriously as he'd walked into it.

Great image...but this bald, chubby guy has to hate Tom just a little bit!

WOW...that hair!  Almost like having Fabio walk into your studio?  Some guys can wear the really long hair well, and some not.  I'm surprised you allowed him to slip away.

Oh well, the ones that have slipped away are countless at this point. Another is just another, right?

Better to have photographed and lost than never to have photographed at all.

This guy just walked into your studio out of the blue...but I've often wondered how you go about acquiring new models.  Did you just hang out your shingle and need crowd control on the pushing/pulling/clamoring lines that form?  Or, do you sometimes go out in search of...?

Models come to me in all sorts of different ways. Having been in the business for over 30 years now it just kind of mostly happens without a lot of effort. You take good pictures of someone and they show them to their friends and some of those friends come for pictures and tell other friends. It's an exponential growth that mostly happens on its own. I do however gently pursue people I find interesting or want to work with. My eyes are always open - anyone who comes across my line of sight is instantly and unconsciously scanned whether I like it or not. In real life I'm painfully shy and find it difficult to just go up to someone and tell them I'd like to photograph them. I've learned how to start a conversation though that doesn't necessarily begin with the words, I'd like to photograph you. It's a quiet, gentle approach that focuses in on making a connection rather than just going for broke with the picture taking thing. I miss some great opportunities because of my shyness but have never wanted for wonderful people to work with.

What a beatiful man! Love: The scene is wonderful taken. A wonderful moment with the wave in the backround coming down and he concentrated as if he would not hear it.

Gorgeous shot. Hot man, cool sea, and I love how the soft waves both in his hair and the water are contrasted by the sharp shapes of the ground. Beautiful!
