Description
A nostalgic moment, this image of a surfer was one of the very first to make it into my portfolios when I started shooting professionally in 1983. I moved to Hollywood from Italy to become a photographer and very soon found Laguna Beach. In those days it was still something of a bohemian haven for the artists, surfers and gay boys who all lived and played there on its beautiful beaches.More than 30 years later this image of a surfer without a wave to ride remains in my collection because it reminds me how simple it is to take a picture. Even a good one. I knew nothing of technique then and everything was hand-metered and I had to trust my eyes instead of a preview pane on the back of the camera.
I believe the image was shot on Kodachrome or Fujichrome with a Nikkor 105 1.8 and subsequently printed on Cibachrome. This scan is from that ciba print. There is a problem with the scanning of course and one of these days I'll redo it. I share this flawed scan because it's the closest I have to the original unmanipulated image.

I can see why you like this so much it tells a story, and all good shots do. Those where the days when we had to calulate f/stops iso and shutter speeds. It is too easy nowadays for amatures to pick up the latest camera and have it all done for them.
But at least they can enjoy the feeling of a good capture without the pain and expence of 35mm film.
This is a good scan, only minor makes (vertical stripes). Lets face it we all know what we are looking at. A handsome guy, just waiting.

LOL - thanks! Early days of scanning yielded spotty results. NO desire to go back and do it all again.

wow this is very beautiful, though there is flaw in the image, it does not take away the beauty of what it is.

Unfortunately the original of this is buried in my archives and I can't find it or I would rescan it. The flaw came from a poor scan originally.

I was too absorbed in the shot to even notic the flaw in scanning untill I read your notes. Brilliant! I love the light effect on his arm.

Yeh, I'm going to go in and fix it in photoshop when I have a few minutes. The original print is in storage or I'd just rescan it. It's in an area that'll be easy to clone and fix.

a feeling of nostalgia and timelessness...this scene will be repeated by countless generations to come...as it was by countless ones that have gone before.
