Description
Next:[link]NOTE: I spent a long time on this comic. If you may, I would really appreciate it if you could tell me what you liked/didn't like/how I could do better instead of just saying "nice" or something like that. EVERYTHING is Β© ME.
Whew! I finally got around to actually drawing and painting this comic about my little Leaf Creature named Earnest! (indirectly) thanks to . Seeing some great watercolor comics gave me the encouragement to do my own. This is just the first part, so stay tuned for more! (that is, once I go buy a new watercolor pad.)
I think I've mentioned that I use a lightbox nowβthat is, I took out a clear drawer from a plastic chest and tape my first paper on top and my watercolor paper on top of that, and I hold my desk lamp between my legs for the light while I ink it. It's a bit complicated, but it works and I don't need to worry about erasing pencil lines!
Hope you enjoy this, and PLEASE crit and comment! As I said earlier, I spent a lot of time on this and it would be appreciated!

I really love the colors and the texture of your paper, in the first scenes I love how you painted the leaf kind of transparent , the rest is awesome too cant wait for part 2

I love this, really! I like the colours and the simplistic style, it's cute and I love how you depicted the atmosphere with the colours - the beginning is almost grey but then it gets more vivid and deep
The one thing I think I could do without are the blurred lines at the edges of the paper. I don't know if it could have been helped in the first place, but it sort of ruins the traditional media look. But well, it's not that bad, and that's honestly the only thing with this that I could point out as not-great. Congratulations for the DD!

This is very beautiful! From the abstract colours to the art, and to the little noodle-limb. The way you have manipulated the colours to give the art depth is very fascinating, too! It's such a gorgeous piece!
I'm not sure if you're aware of the artist 'Nujabes', he was a DJ that passed away, and as a tribute an album was pieced together in his memory called 'Flowers For Jun'. Your story here reminds me of a track on this album called 'Another Wind' by 'Senpai'. I really feel you should look it up if you haven't heard of it. Some lyrics from the final verse seem to really fit : 'The sun sets and brings an end to this day, I slowly fall asleep and begin to fade away, brought into another dream a new world or so it seems'. Thank you for this wonderful piece of art, a real joy to read ^^

I love the conceptual aspect of this piece, and I actually like not really knowing what is happening in that last panel.

I really like the colors and the style in here, especially in the "whirlpool" part where some of the panels are not clearly separated. I also really like the contrats between all the blue and the yellow-orange colors in the end and the dark and bright contrast in the whole thing the kind of blurry style fits very well with the underwater-thing. really nice painting, congrats on the DD!

I love the style, it really does bring the comic to life. If you don't mind my asking, what's the story? I'm not really sure I'm getting it, I might just be being ignorant. Either way, I'm looking forward to the next strip.

I don't usually comment unless I've got something special to say, but since you asked I'll tell you my thoughts. First off, I LOVE the media. Your use of watercolours is beautiful and bold. Very very nice, you couldn't have done better. I love your little character, and I was following the story pretty well until right at the end... I can't work out whether the end is happy or sad? I want it to be happy! I think he's cute! I would have liked one more frame saying what happens to the little chap, but I've just noticed that this is a Part 1, so maybe there's going to be more anyway. Thought your use of frames was lovely, at no point was it unclear what was going on. Overall, lovely. Congrats.

Aww...I love watercolour comics and I love cute wordless comics like these. <3
Personally I feel I would like it better if there wasn't the blurring between the whirlpool pictures though...I know it's to blend them together but I think it'll look fine without it and just being pure traditional (?).
But either way, I love it a lot; the simplicity and watercolour style is beautiful :>

I like everything about the style of this comic, the panels, the little leaf creature (simple but gorgeous) and your use of watercolors. Also the story is really nice, I'm a fan of such journey-things
But why does the little creature open his case? It looks nice when all his things are drifting trough the water but is he searching for something?
Then it's sure an important part of the story^^ I'll keep watching this.

Congrats for the DD :>
I really like this, but... it looks a lot like Shaun Tan's 'Eric' (I think that was its name XD) [link] [link] Was that intentional or subconscious or what? I hate to be a spoilsport but if that's what the character's based on, you should give at least a bit of credit. (I apologise if it was all just a coincidence, but I'm a big fan of Shaun Tan's work, and I'd hate to see his characters being stolen @_@)

tomato-bird In reply to Mud-Glass [2011-06-15 22:47:36 +0000 UTC]
Ohhhh Shaun Tan! I loved The Arrival, and I've seen 'Eric' before I admit. It was from Suburban Tales, right? Yes, there is the influence of how he looks like. Little Earnest actually comes from a group of shadowy ghostlike characters I made up for a poem story I wrote before, who all have different shapes and personalities but have no mouths. Looking back, I think that yes, they do look awfully similar, and even both have suitcases. Ouch.
It's strange; I was afraid that people would think he would be too much like the Shadow Guy in the comic Gunnerkrigg Court, but I didn't really consider Eric until now. DX. However, while I can't change Earnest's basic appearance, I know that I can develop his personality and characteristics more as to make him my own. Thanks for pointing out!

Mud-Glass In reply to tomato-bird [2011-06-16 07:55:03 +0000 UTC]
Yup, Suburban Tales. I think we're all at least a little guilty of being subconsciously influenced by things we like (It was only when I found this that I realised I've been basing some character's shapes off Eric too XD Eg. my avatar) It's good to see that you're not blatantly stealing the character, I was worried for a while there XD
I haven't heard of that comic before, is it good?
Good luck developing him, I hope he ends up as an awesome character! :> (and good luck catching up with all of these messages and favs XD)

The flow of the comic is fine, reads well, and the use of colours, especially the contrasting colours towards the end, but the digital fixes are a bit too obvious and jarring against the organic nature of the comic.
