Description
I hate this image. It's old, it's terrible, there are huge problems with it. It's still here because of it's intense populatity and that it was the thing that shot me to "fame" in the palaeoartistic community. For an up-to-date and far superior version of the same idea see Chris Masna's Velociraptor infographic: www.deviantart.com/art/Velocir…
DISCLAIMER:
Too many people have misinterpreted this image for me not to throw this in. The "real" Velociraptor here is not supposed to be the be-all and end-all of how to feather the animal. Of course there is going to be variation you twats, Velociraptor and it's close relatives are not the same animal (see my post on the opposite end of feather coverage here: tomozaurus.deviantart.com/gall… . The point of the "real" diagram is to direct attention to phylogenetic bracketing as I assume that those drawing half-arse and greyhound deinonychosaurus don't understand it or don't know of it at all (as is evidenced in a lot of comments).

Perhaps, but you'd never be able to reconstruct an ostrich correctly with that kind of thinking.

Sure you could. An ostrich is a very big animal. What people seem to forget is that Velociraptor is very small.

Kiwis, then. Or a rhea isn't all that much bigger than Velociraptor mongoliensis.
I agree with your point that the feathers should cover most of the animal, but it strikes me that stiff, vaned feathers are out of place on such a thoroughly flightless animal. Sure, some ratites use their wings to steer, but they manage perfectly well with soft, downy remiges. (Do they have quill knobs? Hmm, I don't actually know!)
So, I'm not an expert on the subject, but that's why I've always been inclined to picture dromeosaurs with downy, furry-looking feathers, like a ratite.

Its true, with Velociraptor seemingly being secondary flightless, that its feathers may have gone through some sort of degregation, as in ratites. It would not, however, go through any sort of dramatic loss in all probability. Particularly a loss of primary feathers. You and I, indigomagpie, seem to agree on this fact anyway.
A degregation of flight feathers is possible. A loss of feathers, at all is probably unlikely.

Very interesting. I'll be sure to refer to this when I attempt a Velociraptor.

About time! And excellent job with the wing feathers on the "real" Velociraptor.
Very minor nitpick: The "primaries on the forearm" are secondaries - it's rather that half-assed paleoartists leave out the primaries on their maniraptorans but include secondaries, which would render their wings totally useless from an aerodynamical perspective (both in the air and on the ground).

velociraptor isn't supposed to fly. it has the wrong body shape. and its tail it too long and its arm muscles are to weak for sustaned flight and its leg muscles, is they were strong enough to jump into the air and fly, would make up 90% of their body weight and be too heavy to "tuck under their body to become more aerodynamic" like birds do.

Um... neither do I assume that a dromaeosaur of Velociraptor size and proportions would be volant, but did it anyone assume here in the first place?

Heh, I'm afraid I normally draw half-arse dromaeosaurs. xD

Mmm, I had a look in your gallery and they aren't too bad. At least yours don't have stupid looking hands, and you include the primaries on the finger (except on our Velociraptor, where they are on the wrong finger) they just aren't quite long enough. You also don't include the leg primaries or feathers on the face.
I wouldn't worry though, everyone has to learn somehow. I used to make all of these mistakes as well, as close as two years ago, just have a look at the earlier pictures from my gallery.
