Description
This is the former Milwaukee Road Morton Branch just south of Coal Canyon several miles north of Morton, WA. A few miles south of here, the river washed out nearly half a mile of track at a bend during a flood event in 2007 or so. The line hasn't seen any regular traffic since the 1970s. And the Mt. Rainier Scenic RR only used this line occasionally. Now, with the line into Morton cut off, trains may never see the town again.Trains are still able to access this location over the The line south of Mineral and over Divide. There are several trestles, the last one being a spectacular tall curving structure. The trackage leading to this spot is deteriorating quite quickly without the major funding of active freight usage. Continued access to this location is shaky at best.

The little red signal, is like a red rose popping out of the contrasting green foliage. It seems a shame that the line is no longer in use. I would prefer it if trains replaced cars, and I could get a train everywhere. It would probably be better for the environment.

Even if there are just a few practicality issues.

Is this the location where there is a loop track or is this track near the old wye location?

The wye is located a few miles east of Elbe, just off the Mtn Hwy. The loop is squeezed between Mineral Lake and the line south. There is a passing siding at Divide, about halfway between Mineral and Morton. This spot is about 5 miles north of Morton.

The bridge deck behind me is well over 100 feet above a narrow little canyon.

Basically, it's a stop sign. The track suffered a washout a few miles further down the line some years ago. This point is the last point on the line that is still safe for trains to actually use.

I do like the 'vanishing into the forest' feel of this pic.
I'm also curious... is it me, or is there a pink-ish dot about where the tracks would seem to meet in the distance if the greenery didn't cover them...?

That is a bright red stop post staked into the roadbed about 100 yards away.

Used to go hiking along the Milwaukee Road just outside of Butte, Montana. Was one of my favorite hikes!
