What's a coldpress?

Good question!
Most types of art paper, in this case watercolor papaer, are either made through a process called hot press or cold press. Cold press papers usually have a rough texture and hot press papers are smooth with no texture at all. The texture of a paper is often refered to as tooth.
I prefer paper with lots of tooth so I usually work with coldpress papers but I will use hotpress form time to time if I think the piece calls for it.
When working with watercolor papers it is best to use as heavy of a paper as you can afford unless you dont mind stretching your paper first or if you dont mind it curling on you. I use a minimum of 120lb. but I would use 300lb. if I could afford it. 300lb. usually starts at about $11.00 a sheet and goes up from there depending on what brand you buy. NO! one sheet of paper does not weigh 300lbs. Every paper is given a weight based on how much a certian number of sheets weigh. I think its 500 sheets but I am not sure. So the higher the lbs. the thicker the paper.
Hope this was helpful in answering your question.

oh ok, I get it. Thanks for sharing the info. I'm an art student. Just started. No background knowledge of anything. So I'm trying my best to be knowledgable in this field.

Very cool. Yeah I think its very important to know everything you can about your supplies. It doesnt seem like such a big deal now but once you know your paper and other supplies it has a huge impact on how you prepare to work. As your sketching or working out ideas in your sketchbook or mind you will start to consider surface texture, paper weight, medium... You start doing it and you wont really notice it until someday when you what a paticular surface or medium and you dont have it on hand and you just wont start that piece until you have it.
Feel free to ask any questions about papers, supplies or anything else. I went to college to become an art teacher but was so dissapointed at how little the public school system care for the arts. They are always cutting funds to the art departments and cutting the nuber of classes offered. So I have never actually got to teach. Actually thats not completely true. I have had other teachers ask me to do lecture/ workshops on certian stlyes or techniques I was doing at the time. That was really fun. I was pretty nervous but was totaly stoked at the response that I got from the classes. I was still a student myself when I got to do that. I may try to open a studio in a few years and give private instruction. We shall see what happens.

Hahaha. Yes, we shall see what happens. It will be quite some time till I have the brains to consider what I want for my work. Hey, but it's quite worrying if I become so concerned about what I want to use to make a good piece. I will be your freelance student then.

I have a new love for watercolor! ^^ It's creepy cool that all your paintings look like photos at first glance. The water is so awesome!

Thank you for the compliment.
Watercolors are great. yeah I think it is kind of strange that everybody says that at first glance they look like a photo. I havent decided yet if that is a good thing or not. lol If it makes paople look at my work I guess its a good thing.

No problemo!
I would think the fact that people find it as a photo at first glance a good thing. You are able to replicate one medium through another. I don't think many can make a watercolor look like a photo or maybe it's just me. ^^

Yay! Man, if I lived near you and had the money, I would buy one of your originals. But I don't live in Cali anymore and I am a broke 15 yr old. So, sucks for me. ;_;

I guess its a good thing. I usually work in a style that I feel best suits the subject. I am hoping to sell the orignals downtown and people here are very familiar witht the subject matter so maybe that is influencing the way I am painting these. The three I am working on now I think are a little looser though and over all I think I have loosened up with each painting so I am happy.

I personally think that water colour paints are hardest to work with because they dry so quickly, so you have to be skilled to work fast! This looks brilliant and the water is amazing.

Thank you very much.
Yeah. watercolors are kind of hard but I think its because you have to work backwards. From light to dark instead of dark to light. I dont think they dry fast enough. If I am not careful and patient I end up with a muddy mucky mess instead of bright glowy colors. I use a hairdryer to speed things up a bit.
