Actually, I watched a playthrough of 3d, and while it's true Sora wouldn't get his Keyblade without Ven, that's not the reason he failed. After all, Yen Sid did say "You both deserve the honor". However, the reason why Riku was the only one that passed was because he made an extra trip into the world of dreams to save Sora.

See, this plot reveal made no sense either. In KHI, Sora conquered the darkness within himself in that the Keyblade chose him and not Riku. Then Riku magically becomes immune to the darkness between KHII and 3DS and suddenly the situation reverses? Eh. And, actually, Riku passed the exam because Yen Sid said he was the only one who dived into the darkness to save a friend, which is stupid too because Sora was never given that option; we all know he would have done it given he sacrificed his heart to save Kairi's, which is the main reason he's so susceptible to the darkness now. =/
Yen Sid said at the beginning that if they both woke all seven Sleeping Worlds, they'd pass the test. At the end, like a jackass teacher, he changed the qualifications. o3o
Rants aside, I adore this picture!! You draw the KH characters so well. I normally avoid chibis but I can't stop admiring your comics. They're just so adorable. <3

It was because Riku did an extra to save Sora, when they return from the realm of sleep Yen Sid gave Riku the honor because he was willing to save his friend Sora. So Sora had to finish where he left off. I'm sure he passed it eventually. Of course Sora deserve the honor, but the thing was he was kidnapped by the organization so he unable to pass. But luckily he was given another chance to finish.

My point is more that the professor changed the exam mid-way; that's unprofessional and uncool. To say he gave Riku the honour because he was willing to save Sora isn't fair as Sora would just have been willing to save Riku if the situation was reversed. It's unfair to penalize him because those conditions weren't replicated. It's like giving two students separate objectives and failing the one because his test didn't include the one that passed the other.

Ahh I see what you mean. Well I just Yen Sid did say that if they return from their test safely he would pronounce them as "True Masters". When Lea rescued Sora, Sora's body return back to Yen Sid's tower but Riku was still in the realm of sleep to find a way to save Sora.
I think that should explain why.

I agree. It's a big reason the conclusion of DDD disappointed me. I have nothing against Riku becoming a Keyblade Master and Sora missing the bar but not when they both passed the test originally set out for them. The test got hijacked, ergo it should have been postponed or Yen Sid should have taken that into consideration.

See, I take issue with this one. Terra was not a Keyblade Master, so why did HE of all people decide that Riku would be the next Keyblade Master? And, if the X-Blade was made up up Ventus and Vanitas, who are both connected to Sora, why didn't Sora inherit that blade?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
General-Krad In reply to Riku-of-Darkness [2012-12-02 00:25:51 +0000 UTC]
It wasn't that he chose Riku to be the next Keyblade Master, so much as he chose Riku to be his successor if anything happened to him *a wise choice as what happened to him at the game's ending*. It was only later on that Riku proved himself worthy of officially being a Keyblade Master during the events of Dream Drop Distance by conquering his fear of Darkness and that he is willing to risk his life for his friends, while Sora failed due to getting a bit cocky and underestimating the Xehanorts.
As for why Sora didn't inherit the X-blade: The X-blade was NOT formed from Ventus and Vanitas, it was forged by the merging of their Light and Darkness being of equal power. It was destroyed when Ventus's light became stronger than Vanitas's darkness. From my understanding, the X-Blade only existed so long as Darkness and light were in a balance of power. Now, Sora only had the keyblade because at the moment of Destiny Islands' fall into the dark, his heart was filled with more light than Riku's, who, as we all know, was letting the darkness into his heart. It was NOT because Ven is inhabiting Sora's heart that he wield's the keyblade *Nomura has actually said that in an interview, it's over on KHInsider*.
Sorry for the "essay" here, I just tend to think things over a lot. My highschool didn't help that in the least.

Riku-of-Darkness In reply to General-Krad [2012-12-02 01:25:10 +0000 UTC]
I didn't get that impression at all though to be fair, I thought the interaction between Terra and Riku was flat and lacked any emotional connection. I didn't understand why Terra chose Riku of all people. I mean, at the time, there was Sora and Riku, two out of how many people in the universe? The scene reeked of plot convenience rather than Riku being somehow special.
Erm, I don't agree with you about Sora. I don't think he underestimated the Xehanorts so much as being the predictable guy who will run headlong into the darkness if it means he can help his friends somehow. For three games now (maybe four?), Sora's been told his heart is trapping people and others have had to disappear for him to live on, and in DDD, him chasing the dreams, to me, was Sora trying to understand what's "wrong" with him so he can help the individuals he's unknowingly trapped in his heart. Xehanort knew Sora would go into their trap because it's in his nature to help others without considering the danger to himself. And, of course, he didn't defeat the darkness; he wasn't as exposed to it for as long as Riku.
Speaking of Riku, his apparent immunity to the darkness is bogus. It's not explained or developed. He couldn't maintain his own body with the darkness in KHII, and then...what? Kingdom Hearts gets blown up by a machine and Riku's immune to the darkness? Where's the character struggles and working through his inner turmoil? How did he get over his guilt for sacrificing DI to the darkness for his own means? Obviously, his friends helped him through it but why not work this into his story rather than just: "Nice try but you can't sway me anymore."
Him "proving himself a Keyblade Master" was lame too. Yen Sid said at the beginning of the test that if the boys awakened the sleeping worlds, they would BOTH pass the test. Additionally, I think almost everyone knows Sora would have dived into Riku's heart to bring him out of the darkness if the opportunity was given, so saying Riku passed but Sora didn't based on an event only available to Riku is not a fair test.
I'm not disenfranchised to the idea of Riku passing and Sora not but it should have been handled much better, you know?
I figured that was the explanation, given how KHI describes the Keyblade being meant for Riku not Sora intially, but after BBS and DDD, it's clear that ANYONE can learn to wield a Keyblade. My question regarding the "X-Blade" is more because for the games before BBS named a single "Keyblade Master", namely Sora who is the Keyblade wielder from the beginning of the series. Ergo, if the Keyblade was meant for Riku in the beginning, ergo making him the Keyblade Master, how come the inheritance from a guy who was NOT a Keyblade Master would have made Riku a Keyblade Master?
To be honest, the whole concept of the X-blade is not well-explained. You've cleared up some of my confusion about the matter (thank you!!), but I'm still wondering what the purpose of the blade even is. Why was Ventus the only guy who could create this blade? How many people were experimented on before Xehanort decided Ventus would be the one to work? And why is this supposed blade of balanced light/darkness so important? What's the end game of having it? Is it just the magic mcguffin of the series? Why is it more important than Kingdom Hearts itself? *rantrantrant*
See, this is the issue with Nomura redacting the plot and characters with every new installment. It might explain some things but it also confuses many others. Sora was called the Keyblade Master for KHI, CoM, KHII and Days before BBS walked in and made Keyblade Mastery into a scholarly/training concept. Now that you have to be "knighted" to a Keyblade Master by a prior master, Sora is suddenly not a Keyblade Master, making the title in the earlier games very confusing.
Sorry for my rant in return. ^-^; Analyzing and overthinking things is a natural response for me though a BA in English literature doesn't help.

General-Krad In reply to Riku-of-Darkness [2012-12-02 05:21:04 +0000 UTC]
I don't mind the rant, I actually like reading them *so long as they're not the rants that will inevitably start flame wars*.
Recall that Terra did sense something from Riku when was drawn to Destiny Islands *the worlds themselves are sentient to an extent in the series after all, knowing they need saving and all* Even then, he talked to Riku to understand him better, asking him what is most important to him and the like. With that he found Riku to be a lot like himself, and made him his successor. It is not that Riku was destined to be a master when his predecessor failed, it was that he eventually proved himself to be a master in his own right. Also, remember that Xehanort fixed the Mark of Mastery exam Eraqus was holding so that Terra wouldn't pass *and that Eraqus himself was blinded by his own demons, of the light. Showing that even too much Light is not a good thing*
As for our differing views on Sora's falling into the hands of Organization Xehanort: I agree, he was tormented by the whole deal of finding out that people are suffering and he's instrumental in their suffering. But he is also like so many other shonen style heroes: good will always trump evil, not understanding his own limits or at least being too willing to break his limits *rim shot*, sacrifice himself for his friends and even people he's just met, etc. So, I chose the wrong word when I called Sora arrogant, what i should have said is that he was over confident. Really what got him in Xehanort's grasp was a combination of over confidence (When Yen Sid tells him and Riku about Master Xehanort, Sora says that they don't need the mark of Mastery Exam, that it's just a formality, and that they can take on anything...that is a bit over confident), and his self guilt for the suffering of others that he had no hand in causing.
For Riku and his immunity to Darkness, I agree. That detail is not explained enough. But, I theorize that his immunity is due to his heart becoming stronger against Darkness. Think of it like when immunized for the flu, or other diseases: Our bodies gain a resistance to the disease by having the disease introduced to us. If Darkness in the Kingdom Hearts universe works like a disease, Riku's time in the Darkness, and his getting over it naturally allowed him to build up a defense against it's influence. Or such as nobility in the past would gradually introduce themselves to poisons to build up an immunity to it, the same happened to Riku when he willingly accepted his inner Darkness between Days and KH2.
Yen Sid's passing of Riku and failing of Sora: We can't really say much for what his reasoning was behind that, he's a character we have not seen much about in the franchise, save for his four appearances in the series. Even then, he has been a mysterious figure even when he's there. When did he stop being a Keyblade Master. Or how long has he known about everything that's been occurring in the series. So far he seems to be the antithesis to Xehanort: they both know what must be done, when it must be done, but only give vague answers that can be interpreted any number of ways. Thus, I think he failed Sora at the very start of the game, when Sora showed how over confident he was in the team's ability to beat Xehanort.
Yen Sid himself even said that they both could pass, they could both fail, or only one pass. If Riku had agreed with Sora's confidence, they'd both have failed. If Sora had shown restraint in his confidence, both could have passed. So really, it was more of Yen Sid testing their character, and not their ability. The exam itself was meant to give Riku more confidence in himself, something he lacked due to thinking too much about his betrayal in the first game, and show Sora that they do need more training to even stand a ghost of a chance against Xehanort. Sora failed due to his over confidence from having beaten Xehanort's Heartess and Xemnas, two fractions of Xehanort's personality and power, not understanding his true power. Riku passed because the test took him to people that were like him, little confidence, and allowed him to build up his confidence and lessen his doubt. If just one member of the team in the final battle is over confident or doubts themselves, it would turn the whole tide of the battle in Xehanort's favor.
They never referred to Sora as the Keyblade master in the previous games. They've always used wielder of the keyblade, keyblade bearer, or Keyblade wielder. Only Sora himself has referred to himself and Riku as Keyblade Masters, even saying the exam was just a formality. As for the games not speaking of any other keyblade wiedlers before BBS came around: In Kingdom Hearts 1, they keyblade clearly had other wielders before, for it to be legendary weapon. And in Kingdom Hearts 2, before Xigbar's boss fight, "But man did it pick a dud this time. You don't look like you're half the hero the others were." Xigbar was referring to the trio from BBS, from a decade before Sora's wielding of a keyblade.
It doesn't matter if you inherit a keyblade from a Master or not, being a Master is decided by your own abilities with it, and to be recognized as one by a Master of the Keyblade (Eraqus, Yen Sid, even Xehanort, as when he confronted Terra at the beginning). Also, Aqua was going to initiate Sora as her successor *she didn't know it had already been done with Kairi*, but stopped when she sensed that Riku had been accepted as Terra's successor, and she didn't want to risk making Sora and Riku fight as she believed she and Terra would *a sad bit of hindsight and foreshadowing for later in BBS, and the first game).
As for the X-blade's importance: [link] In this scene from DDD, Master Xehanort describes the blade as being the opposite of Kingdom Hearts, yet acting as the key that measures the amount of power and light from kingdom hearts that seeps into the worlds. And that when the battle over light happened, the X-blade was shattered into 20 pieces: 13 of Darkness, and 7 of Light, and that when the blade shattered, Kingdom Hearts itself was locked away in the darkness. He also mentions how his forging of the X-blade with Ventus and Vanitas was his mistake for being impatient and rash. As for whether the X-blade is more important than Kingdom Hearts, it doesn't seem like it is. It would appear that they are actually of equal importance: without one, the other cannot reach it's fullest.
And sorry to for these analytical comments here that are not about your piece.

Riku-of-Darkness In reply to General-Krad [2012-12-02 06:36:16 +0000 UTC]
Hm. I do recall him saying it but saying something doesn't make the sentiment believable. Perhaps it was merely the voice-acting or the animation or the dialogue, or all, but Terra's "connection" to Riku was not believable to me. If anyone is overconfident in the series, it was Terra. He falls for Xehanort's bait without hesitation, and gets it into his head that he can do whatever will serve him best, regardless of what Eraqus thinks and in spite of his friends' concern about him. So, while I respect your interpretation, I don't agree that Terra reached out to Riku with the concern he might fail, and decides to pass on Keyblade inheritance. In KHI, we know the Keyblade (though apparently, it's just "a" Keyblade, much less important) was meant for Riku, so BBS decides to make a token scene of Terra finding Riku because of a "plot device" feeling that draws him to Destiny Islands. The entire scene reeked of convenience rather than emotive connection to me. Not to mention, if Terra is incapable of restraining the darkness inside of himself, is it not foolish to hand the power of the Keyblade off to a child he feels connected to? Won't that child inevitably make the same stupid mistakes he does?
I'll agree to Sora not understanding or respecting his own limitations but I don't classify that habit as overconfidence. Again, perhaps this is just me, but Sora always seems to be a few things: naive, altruistic and optimistic. When he says the test is a formality, I don't think it's meant as overconfidence, but just confidence that he and his friends are strong enough to handle the challenges ahead so long as they stand together and fight. And, quite frankly, he's right. What is the importance of the title "Keyblade Master" anyways? Eraqus was defeated by a non-master, Aqua was bloody useless throughout the majority of BBS (always ten steps behind everything), and Sora did just fine throughout the first load of adventures without needing some old guy to label him a "Keyblade Master". For Sora to say it's just a title, well, I agree with him and I don't believe it's because he's overconfident in his skills. I'd say, rather than overconfident, Sora is ignorant. He willingly sacrifices himself, jumps into the thick of things and just goes on instinct without generally considering the negative consequences such naivety can cause. He doesn't think things through, which if we want to consider a Keyblade Master" to be a leader and example to follow, is a very important trait. Riku definitely passes the test if this is the case because he thinks about what could happen to him if he is not prepared for the worst, and then considers what scenarios are classified as "worst".
Well, I do like your theory, but again, it's not developed enough with the information we have available. Ostensibly, Riku is immune after Kingdom Hearts explodes because after that point, he isn't in the "darkness" very much longer. He's in TWTNW for the fight with Xemnas, then he and Sora end up in the realm of darkness after the battle, but nothing really happens to him there. Then he's on Destiny Islands until DDD. And, while I like the theory, I have to wonder if the heart and an outside force like "Light and Darkness" can be considered the same as a physiological ailment like the flu or chicken pox. Like you said, "IF the Darkness works like a disease". It's an interesting theory but unless Nomura expands on it, Riku's sudden immunity still comes up "convenient for the plot".
True, Yen Sid isn't really developed in the canon beyond Disney fans knowing he was the sorcerer Mickey was apprentice to in Fantasia. I think the only reason he's considered a "Keyblade Master" is because it's logical to make him Mickey's teacher, ergo a plot convenient judge for the Mastery exam. However, because his character IS so mysterious, his decision to alter the parameters of the test after it's over comes off as a jerk move by a teacher tipping the scales for a preferred student. And in this case, Yen Sid becomes an Author-Insert for Nomura. I've read a few articles that state Nomura liked the idea of a rising Riku and falling Sora and pretty much all of DDD smacks of this notion, and most notably in Riku's passing and Sora's failing.
Since I don't agree about Sora's overconfidence, I don't really agree with the idea that the exam was determined based on their answers at the beginning. It's an excellent analysis, and I'll certainly be considering your perspective when KHIII finally releases to compare our thoughts. However, it's clear proof that the game leaves too much open to interpretation. If we go by a literal reading of Yen Sid's words, passing the test meant awakening the sleeping worlds and both Sora and Riku did that together. However, after learning the test was hijacked, he altered the parameters of what constituted a "pass/fail", and used a scenario that Sora was not given the opportunity to attempt. Because how could he, when his dreams were the ones hijacked? Also consider that Riku didn't pass the test on his own power alone; he needed the help of Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Lea; since Sora says quite often he cannot succeed without his friends, I believe he and Riku's roles could have been switched in the game and that scene wouldn't have been any different.
I will have to go rewatch the cutscenes because I'm quite sure they referred to him as such quite a few times alongside the "bearer" and "wielder" monikers. Yes, it would have wielders before Sora, but at the time of KHI, it seemed like the type of weapon that seeks out its own wielder, thereby making the new wielder its Master. And in KHII, Xigbar could just as easily have been referring to the single wielders over the "legendary" years of the Keyblade's existence, which he would have learned about from Xemnas.
Again, the recognition by a "Master of the Keyblade" seems weak to me, like how you need a license that officially makes a couple married according to law rather than how they view their relationship. Obviously the "Masters" have differing opinions on what constitutes a Keyblade Master, so how exactly is the exam considered an accurate one? Xehanort obviously passed the exam at one point, and who the hell thought that was a good idea? You don't just become as twisted and desirous of the darkness over a few years; that's just inherent in his nature. Eraqus focused too much on the Light, and Yen Sid's parameters aren't clearly defined. So, yes, I have to agree with Sora; the title doesn't mean that much if few can decide what it even means to be one. It's a status symbol more than a meaningful achievement, or at least that's how the games have presented it to me thus far.
You know, I watched that scene twice and the entire concept still doesn't make sense to me. How come the concept of the X-Blade was never revealed until BBS and DDD? The 7 pure hearts in KHI were what guided the path to Kingdom Hearts, then in KHII, Kingdom Hearts could be pieced together by purging Heartless of the hearts they are carrying. Now, the only way to get a hold of Kingdom Hearts again is the X-Blade? Nomura keeps creating new elements to try and explain things that have already happened, but it always seems to make a bigger mess of the plot than it already was. Are the 7 princesses of pure heart ever going to be important again or is that a lost point now that the 7 lights refer to Keyblade wielders instead?
Gosh you make me think a lot. This is very refreshing. ^-^ Thank you.
;////; I'm sorry too, but I'm kinda glad your picture could spark such a intellectual debate.
