Description 92.) "All That I Have "

Yoren Willis Shotton

"All that I have... has been taken from me." That's exactly what I thought when I read that particular subject in the themes challenge. Immediately I was in my Solar's head. Closing my eyes at night, this scene came to me. It is a bit from his past, 80 years he spent in those dungeons, on display and entertainment of the type no one should ever know.

And folks wonder why he has so little regard for the world.

Technicalities:

75+ Hours spent over old sketch paper with my new hard technical graphite set. 9H, 6H, HB, F, and 2B.
Digital adjustments only to contrast.
Original expression study found here: [link] with another many hours work involved. I decided to change some things, slight angle difference, position of the shoulders, the size of ear and eye alike. Hopefully I lost none of the feel.

Useful stock photos for referrence on the chains: [link] by

Special thanks also to & 's YakYak! for help visualizing the wings, and to those on ponyisland.net who gave helpful advice. Forever <3s

O My Gosh.
I just died of shock.
If some of the pasts artists could draw like that, our present art would be a whole dimension higher!!
- just a thought... is it me or does he remind you of Angeal from FF7 Crisis Core? [link] not a good pic but its enough to show the clone ness -

Wow, your post actually bumped this picture into a second page of comments! I think that just might be a first for any of my projects!

Thank you very much, I am very flattered you would say so, it makes the kind of time I invested in it so much more worth it. I'm still not sure what happened in this one, I just felt a very powerful scene and sat down and did it. Very odd that after this one, I have been frustrated with everything else because it didn't "fall together" like this one did. I have to keep reminding myself the endless hours with eraser I spent...

Your link is interesting! Never played any of the final fantasy games, much less looked at the characters. I could see some similiarities, though his forehead is wider and I don't think he has the same shape chin or nose. ^^ Trust me... omgosh it took me so long to get the likeness to my own character right, without any referrence beyond whats in my head. Extremely difficult for me!

hehe, and hopefully your crisis angel hasn't been through half of the stuff poor Shotton has! I'm very cruel to my characters.

Not saying you copied, just a bit surprised, and congrats Angeal has been through a bit worse, I think because he is dead :/ Your art is amazing I hope to be able to draw like you one day... or at the least doodle like you xD
Keep up the drawing

Towim In reply to horsegame [2010-04-05 20:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe, oh, I know you didn't mean I copied. Similarities are found everywhere in the art world! We all draw inspiration from real life in some way, that it is hard to avoid.

And yeah, Shot's not dead... though there's been a few times he's been close!

Keep praticing! Art only flows when you try. <3

Thank you very much for the great images! I was having such issues imagining what it would look like, and I promise you, I'd have never even come this close without such help! Thanks for the comment, it always means so much to me to hear back from the stock artists. ^^

I'm terribly impressed... This makes my attempts at wings look so childish. This obviously took a lot of time, and it's pretty amazing.

Towim In reply to Ankh-Ascendant [2010-02-09 04:36:26 +0000 UTC]

You sell yourself short dear. I did a lil browsing through what you have on DA, and you are far more on the right track than many folks I've seen (myself included up to even a month ago when I started really studying them.) I really like the pic you did of Nasri in particular, you have such a beautiful idea going on there.

Best I can say is just to pick a type of bird you love the wings on, and just live, breathe and dream photos of it. Lots of sketches and really seeing what is there, rather than what you've "learned."

xD My wing on this one is off, if you want to know the truth of it. It bugs me now!

I've thought of doing a sort of wing study/tutorial thing this month, if I find people would actually be interested in something like that.

Thanks for the comment! <3

I'm surprised, embarrassed, and gratified all at the same time that you looked at my gallery. Most of it's a bit scary. Thank you for the advice - it's inspiring me to do more research than looking at tutorials. DA can definitely use with another good wing tutorial, though - I'd definitely like to see if you do one. :]

Towim In reply to Ankh-Ascendant [2010-02-09 19:18:06 +0000 UTC]

I will definately do one then. There are some definately great stock artists out there, if you know what kind of wing you wish to draw, each bird is a little different. I've got one more picture to get out of me first, but then I'll put a wing study on my list of things to do! <3 Good luck, and don't be a stranger hehe.

Gorgeous and amazing. I love your shading, and your attention to detail: the clipped feathers, the bricked-up door... :bows:

Thank you for the amazing comment. I'm so glad to see all that detail appreciated, especially after it took so long to complete. I usually don't do backgrounds, this was such a growth picture for me in that regard, that is great to feel like I actually accomplished something that others enjoy. *salute*

I love where his wings meet his body. I love his abs. I love the bricks on the wall.
I love the amount of love that you clearly invested in this.

I love that you encouraged me to get back into graphite. I still claim this is all your fault. That simple request you made back in my journal a couple months ago has brought me to exploring some of my old favorites... classics... and seeing what I can do with them now.

...that and, I found my old drafting pencil again. xD The one good thing that ever happened to me in that old wood-shop.

Thank you so much! You know your comments mean the world for me. I put up art, and sit here refreshing all day long till I get it.
