Description
one of my self portraits from over the summersummer assignment: do two self portraits, one based off of the style from another artist and one that is influenced by another culture
this is my culture piece: modern day mexico city
oh how I could go off on the meaning behing this piece...I guess I will a bit
when you think about mexico what images come to mind? party cities, tequila, or perhaps old run down military towns in the middle of the desert
the truth is mexico is a third world country and there is so much that is hidden, after spending a week at an oraphanage thats 45 outside of mexico city I was exposed to a world I never knew and taken in to a family of 600 kids, I have never seen such selflessness and love like this before and it was amazing
the polaroid in the painting is an actual polaroid a girl named Minerva gave to me, the reason why I am holding it infront of my face is to represent why I went to mexico, not for myself but to put these kids infront of myself and serve them, why are we in color and the background in black and white? to show that yes, mexico city is beyond what you see in the travel brochures but there is so much hope and light within the kids that I met...it wasnt like Oliver Twist "oh you poor orphan I pity you" it was a real family real love and they are so much better off at NPH than what they had in their old lives
the unique thing about NPH is that you cannot adopt the orphans, they stay at the orphange until highschool then they move to an orphange in the cities for highschool, they make sure they graduate and help them get a job after highschool or make sure they continue their education, then they will come back to NPH for a year of service to show their apperication
anyway...theres a lot more to this piece and why I used the mediums that I used but...this is good enough for now
the city scape in the background was based off of a photo taken by and © [link] used with permission.
acrylic on an old rotting barn door....about 4-5 ft wide and 3ft tall? I'm unsure of the size...all I know is that its freaking heavy

When I went down to the gallery in which this was displayed, with my Lit class, I stared at this picture for quite awhile, trying to see how you managed such a feeling so well, it was my favorite work there, and I never knew it was you who did it.
