Description
You guys still seem to like this tutorial, but it's old and out of date so I apologise for that. Comments are now disabled, sorry!I had an hour study period at school in which I had nothing to study and I couldn't work on commish without my notes (dA is banned at school for some dumbass reason), so I decided to make this... thing.
Anyway, this might provide a bit of insight into how I produce hair in my digital paintings. Yes, I know, I KNOW this is the trillionth hair tutorial on deviantART, but all I ever see are anime/manga style ones and I have never really found a tutorial for curly hair, so I figure someone out there might find this style useful. Maybe.
Oh yeah, and it's a big image. Watch out, those of you on slow connections.
Or rather, there's no need to watch out, but you might as well go and get a coffee whilst it loads or something.
There is now a part 2 here: [link]
And there is now a fur tutorial

Hi, I used this tutorial for a little project of four deviations:
Knave of Wands: [link]
Knave of Pentacles: [link]
Knave of Swords: [link]
Knave of Chalices: [link]
That's the first time I re-paint something, so that's the reason for the low quality, your tutorial is wonderful

This really did help, however you definitely can't stress how much easier it would be with a graphics tablet (I'm a mouse user.)

Yes, this is very amazing. As stated above, easy to understand and easy to follow, it really helped me a lot.
Even though I didn't get exactly the same result, I was close, even with a mouse and the first time coloring something (almost)!
I really must thank you for this one.

I've stopped using the overlay step myself, actually - well, I used it once in one digital painting I did recently, and have just given up on it otherwise. This tutorial is so out of date for my style that it isn't funny, but I'm glad that it was helpful to you all the same!

everybody's got to start somewhere, its much easier than using the smudgetool trick.
By the way, what kind of tablet do you use?

I suspect so, providing that you use shorter, possibly fluffier strokes. I may come up with a tutorial for animal fur at some point in the future, in which I could go into some more specific detail about the line of the fur on the body, but the basic principle should work the same. Say you're drawing this animal - I'd start from whichever part of the body you can see that is farthest back, and work forwards, so you get the layers of fur in the correct 'order', if you know what I mean. Hope that helps and makes sense.
