Description I'm really, really sorry about the lack of update, guys. Struggling a lot with the comic lately.
I put this panel process rundown together for Draw! recently, though, and even though it's not very exciting, I figured at least it's something I could share in the meantime.

This process has gotten vastly more complicated since I started working on Lackadaisy. Pages used to be almost 100% pencil with just a little sepia tone added digitally. Now, after penciling, a panel often requires hours of additional work. (Put 12 or 15 panels together per page, and it adds up to at least part of the reason I fail so hard at regular updates.)

Other Lackadaisy stuff is here . Twitter and Facebook announce site updates too.

I really like the masking trick. Never thought of approaching it that way with a two tone drawing. BTW, do you know roughly how long the sketch it self tool?

The penciling took probably about 3 hours, give or take a half hour. When I'm having a good day, artistically speaking, penciling goes pretty fast, but then there are always those days when nothing you draw comes out looking quite right.

I know that feeling. Usually when that happens I just take a break that day and do other creative things.

Not very exciting? Are you kidding me? I LOVED seeing your process. Each step made me appreciate your work more and more. It's so technical and comes out so beautifully. <3

Very neat technique. I especially like the effect at the end with the darker and lighter layering. That seems to finish it off well.

The first thing I said to myself after reading the first caption was "You call this raw?" It's amazing. And pretty. And it only gets better. And updates can wait if this is the sort of work we get to enjoy coughforfreecough.

Whoa. That's bloody insane. I envy your work ethic.

Can't argue with the results. I wish you'd update faster, but now the amount of time makes sense.

How do you stay motivated, anyway?

So you don't ink your pages at all? Interesting, your lines are so clean I didn't realize they were just pencils.

Tanowto In reply to wandering-dreamer [2010-11-08 23:05:25 +0000 UTC]

Ditto, I always thought that you inked it because of how clean the lines were, but now that I look at it, inking would change the feel so much...

Weird. I live in a suburb of St. Louis by a Jungermann Road. Didn't know there was a Jungerman in St. Louis.

tracyjb In reply to HighlyLowPlaces182 [2010-11-08 23:21:54 +0000 UTC]

There isn't. I did borrow the name from Jungermann Road (in St. Charles), but there are a lot of Germanic-sounding names mixed in with the French names all over the St. Louis area, so it seemed equally fitting for the storefront.

Your lack of updates make me appreciate the comic more in an odd way. It makes me savor each page that much more. It blows my mind that the whole comic is done by you alone. Your skill truly is unparalleled.

Holy cow that's a lot of steps to go through. Though it clearly works great! Man and you do this with every panel? I can see why it takes so long. But don't worry, as long as it may take, I'm still going to wait so I can read this awesome comic~

This is really cool! I love seeing the "behind-the-scenes" information, so to speak. Now I understand why updates take so long! It sure is worth the wait, though. Have you thought about teaching someone to draw and color in your style, to help you out with some of the process? Maybe they could do backgrounds and you could do the characters, or you could do the basic drawing and let someone else do the shading and coloring. Something to think about to cut down on the work.

Thanks very much.
I've thought about it. It might be nice to hire some help...but until pocket lint is considered legitimate currency, it's not probable.

IanFlynnBKC [2010-11-08 22:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Your step by step instructions are clear, concise, and each example shows precisely what you've done.

That said, it still looks like you're putting on a magic show. "First pencils.....and now masterpiece!" It's awe-inspiring. It's intimidating.

No worries about production speed. This is a fun side project for you, right? It's yours to do with as you please, and it's worth the wait for everyone else.

I looked, but I couldn't find anything on your website about how you keep your pencil drawings so clean and smudge free; do you wear gloves?

I did find your prequel comics with Viktor and Mortecai though, good stuff

tracyjb In reply to bendzz [2010-11-08 23:32:18 +0000 UTC]

I don't wear gloves, but most of my penciling isn't smudge free either. Every now and then I manage to pencil something that looks nice and clean in the end by sheer luck, but usually I do a little clean up work with a kneaded eraser before I scan the artwork.

I've kept an eye on your Lackadaisy for god knows how long now. [I promise I'll buy your book some time!]

As an artist attempting to illustrate a story/concept thing myself [more fo a concept because i suck at writing/plots. So respect to you for being able to do that too!] I understand just how much has to go into each page.. no, each panel even, then of course the background research to support your story's facts and various things.
It really doesn't matter to me if you only update once in a long time. I have to say.. i'm trying to do my one in colour- and hyperrealistically, I might actually beat you on the waiting times between pictures!
As ever, I'm always happy to find a picture of yours in my inbox, and I hope you get really rich from all the work you put into it!
[also, I watch you on another account, so if you were wondering why I'm saying all this and noticed the recent watch from me, well, there's the explanation.] <3

Dear god. Looking at what you have to go through in order to finish a single panel reminds me of just how much farther I have to go with my digital art. Thanks for giving me something to aim towards.

Seriously, though, you put so much time and effort into your comic that regular updates would just be unheard of.
I'm sure you have to go outside some time. Eat. Shower.... maybe sleep. Interact with family members. Do human things.
So really, no more apologies. We all understand.

Just keep fighting the good fight!
You're an inspiration to us all.
