Description I'm really, really sorry about the lack of update, guys. Struggling a lot with the comic lately.
I put this panel process rundown together for Draw! recently, though, and even though it's not very exciting, I figured at least it's something I could share in the meantime.

This process has gotten vastly more complicated since I started working on Lackadaisy. Pages used to be almost 100% pencil with just a little sepia tone added digitally. Now, after penciling, a panel often requires hours of additional work. (Put 12 or 15 panels together per page, and it adds up to at least part of the reason I fail so hard at regular updates.)

Other Lackadaisy stuff is here . Twitter and Facebook announce site updates too.

Fantastic layering of the saturated/softer layers, it really does make a huge difference in the focal points. Beautiful as usual!

Oh, I have a question that I've been wondering about for the past few weeks. What made you choose to use cats for your comic?

Even the lineart just makes me want to curl up in a corner and sob from a huge hit of Inferiority complex.
I dread to think how much effort goes into the full colour pieces.
Truly astounding work here.

I THOUGHT I had noticed increases in your appending of digital effects! I've actually gone through the comic several times, bringing up early and later pages in multiple browser windows to do side-by-side comparison. The kicker for me here had to be the last point. The blending of the two sepia layers with a mask to accentuate light and dark warranted a whispered "...genius."

The last step really makes all the difference. How exactly do you use the layer mask to get the effect?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

tracyjb In reply to RIPZyden070121 [2010-11-08 21:26:11 +0000 UTC]

I usually put the darker version of the panel on top of the brighter, more saturated one. Then I apply a layer mask to the uppermost, dark version of the panel (in the layer window in Photoshop). With a large, soft, low opacity brush, I then start painting in black on the mask only to make portions of the top panel partially transparent. That allows the brightness of the panel beneath to shine through in certain locations.

You could achieve the same effect by simply erasing parts of the topmost layer, really. The advantage to using the mask instead is that you can go back and adjust it because you're technically not erasing anything in the top layer, just masking parts of it.

RIPZyden070121 In reply to tracyjb [2010-11-09 21:13:49 +0000 UTC]

oic, now I follow. I'm a little new to layer masks, but since learning about them I don't know how I managed without. Thanks very much This is a beautiful effect.

peannlui In reply to RIPZyden070121 [2010-11-08 21:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Both sepia versions are layered, you only need to apply a Layer mask to one and erase the parts (with a soft brush) you don't need.

beautiful! I've become quite hooked on your series, so this made my day. Not to mention that your tips have been very helpful to my own work.

Don't stress about updating, the results are worth it. I seriously can't believe your A) doing this alone and B) offering it for free. Considering these, I think your schedule can be a bit lax.
