It does have a more modern look than the previous 4-6-0s, outside motion, extended smokebox, etc.

Oh, they all had the outside motion, but the single color and extended smokebox are indeed much more modern.

I was referring to the valve gear itself versus the cylinders being on the outside, but I agree that they do have a more modern look.

The valve gear was on the outside on the original Stevens 4-6-0s. And, indeed, on most of Stevens' designs. He was the second locomotive builder to adapt a variant of Walschaerts. (Note the previous deviation "Monkey Motion" that features the exact same valve gear on the original model)
