EMD F40PH, You say that and every railroad you meet will know what your talking about, One of if not the most popular and well know American Diesel Locomotives built by EMD (second to the SD40-2) The F40PH as become an icon of American, Canadian and Panama railroading.EMD stands for Electro-Motive Diesel, F stands for "Full with cowl body" 40 is the model series, P for Passenger gearing and the H mean it had Head end power, HEP for short.
Many type of the F40's were made for the US and Canada as well as mentioned Panama.
F40PH/R:
Two version were built for Amtrak, The standard F40PH and The F40PHR witch were F40's built with SDP40F parts such as Air pumps, Prime mover and traction motors.
F40PH-2D:
Built by EMD's Canadian counter part GMD (General motors deviation) The F40PH-2D was built for Via Railway of Canada. It was the F40PH with Canadian details such as. CN Passenger style pilots, Winterized Cabs, Computer style dash's and a Nathan K3H Horn.
F40PHM-2:
One of the few commuter versions. The F40PH was tested on Chicago's Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and become the go to locomotive for moving commuters all thought out Chicago land. Years later the RTA's successor Metra would used them and a new type of the engine called The F40PHM-2. Know for is alterative noise and cab design.
F40PH-2C/F40PH-2Cats:
Another commuter version for easter commuter railroads. transit agencies lengthened their locomotives to include a separate HEP generator. F40PH-2C with were F40's with Cummins engines as HEP Generator's. Later some would be upgraded and built with Caterpillar's engine as HEP Generator's giving them the designation F40PH-2Cats
NPCU "Cabbages":
In the late 1990's when Amtrak reserved its fleet of P40DC Locoamtvie, They now had a lot of F40's, Some were scrapped where others were sold off to Commuter and tourist railroad's and Railroad Leasing company's. Amtrak Retained 15 F40's and converted them into non powered control units (NPCU) This include remove the traction motor's, HEP Generators, Prime mover and having a roll up baggage Door. This lead to the NPCU's to be Nicknamed Cabbages.
F40M-2F:
During the F40's career with Amtrak Norfolk Southern leased a few F40's for Freight servies during a Power shortage. During Amtrak's selling of of the F40's Kansas City Southern bought a few and regarded them for freight servies in Panama. This inspsired a Freight version of the F40 know as the F40M-2D.
The last two are Fictional engine. I just made then out of fun.
