I'd say the first one seems rather wrong, or at least unexpected to me seeing how the games tend to suggest she is a rather quiet and not so social person. But the rest is fun anyway

I'm gonna have to go with samus on this one, group projects suck. I prefer to work alone, people just tend to get in the way and in the worst way they can hinder your own progress.
social loafing, look it up. its a real thing. >.>

personally I've normally gone for the 'Samus is erza scarlet from Fairy tail' angle, but this interpretation is much more amusing.

Ridley in Metroid Fusion was the fossilized clone from Other M, the Galactic Federation were not only continuing their research of Metroid Breeding, they were continuing their Zebasian experiments from the Bottleship!
From this point in the timeline, any game set after Fusion, the Galactic Federation are likely to be the main antagonists, and Samus attempting to bring to light the dirty illegal experiments the Federation are running to the public eye!

That's how I pictured it! With the Pirates out of the picture, the Federation is the most powerful force in the galaxy, and I'm sure their more corrupt elements have a lot more to reveal about themselves. Could be very interesting!

Really nice work, Ian! Β I don't think Metroid is being revisited again anytime soon after the fallout of Other M and Nintendo's focus on its own home market (they're not as hungry for things like Metroid in Japan) so this is a nice place as any to rest our thoughts.
I'm one of those people who actually did give Other M a second look because of MovieBob's controversial video and this kind of tied the loose threads together. She's not the faceless female Master Chief some people wanted her to be, she's not the coldhearted Action Girl some people wanted her to be, nor is she perfectly portrayed by the clumsy (but probably well-meaning, all things considered) hands of Team Ninja.
In the end she's just... Samus. And I think you got her here.

I never really got the hate for Other M, mainly because Samus never really had much of a character before that game :/ And what little we did see in the Prime games and in stuff like Fusion and Zero Mission isn't contradicted by it....I think you kind of portrayed the reason a lot of people hated Other M in this comment, because they'd essentially all created their own idea and vision of who and what Samus really was. I really like Other M because it made Samus a more complex character and in a way actually made her a character...I've never really understood why for some people a character can only ever be one thing, or if they're someone who's an action hero like Samus or other characters like that, they can't ever express any moment of weakness or what are usually perceived as negative emotions >_> But you seem to get it and our thoughts on the matter seem to align fairly well.

That's essentially the point MovieBob was trying to make back in the day when Other M first came out. It pretty much exploded in his face because it was the wrong time to discuss it. I want to be fair to the other side though -- the anger existed in part because they needed Samus to be something she ultimately wasn't and probably didn't want to be. That need comes from a real place too and it's only beginning to be seriously addressed by the games industry.
(You can see a sort of similar situation play out with Naoto's arc in the Persona games as she relates to gender identity issues and how her personal choices went against what socially marginalized transpeople need right now -- but choicesΒ still right for Naoto as a person and her own needs.)

I think one reason it exploded in his face so much was because he went from VIDEO GAMES ARE MADE IN JAPAN to accusing us of racism when we blamed Japanese culture for Other M...the very things he grudgingly admitted were the reason it seemed off to Westerners (focusing on Samus' difference to authority and that Ripley scene).
Mainly, I think it was a big shock that a feminist would defend something like Other M .
Also, I think it's rather unfair to say that we wanted Master Chief.Β I think it'd be more accurate to say we wanted Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor: a quiet badass with a sensitive side.Β You said this comic got Samus' character right, and I agree.Β Now compare this with her personality with Other M.

Midnight-Tea In reply to AlgaeNymph [2015-03-20 22:11:57 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I feel like Bob's earlier videos were a lot more hamfisted etc. -- but a feminist defending Other M? That's not so weird. When you get down to it, wanting Samus to be an icon one way or the other rather than a character, poorly handled/portrayed or not (and it does sound like Other M screwed the pooch), is in itself a bit unfair. If not itself arguably a case of character objectification, since the writer's freedom to determine Samus' identity free of consideration for her gender is being marginalized in favor of what role or icon people want her to be.
I'm not saying I'm defending the game, I'd never played it. Not really a Nintendo person in general. Just saying that from a feminist perspective I don't find Bob's argument strange or contradicting his general positions. I find it telling most of Other M's issues as they related to feminism have to do with huge plot holes and incompetent writing more generally. I think Hanlon's razor applies here.
Also the whole VIDEO GAMES COME FROM JAPAN thing I think wasn't meant to be taken literally. It's just sort of meant to be a reminder that after the violent industry-destroying crash in the 80's, it was indeed almost exclusively Japanese creators for a while and the after-effects of that outside revival are still felt today. (i.e. the 90's anime boom and the rise of me and my fellow weeaboo-types). And yeah, I don't think it was relevant to that video, he should've just pointed out things like how dramatic cultural differences in how one relates to authority muddy the issue and left it at that. I think the guy would be much better liked if he didn't seemingly have a Messiah complex and didn't have a pathological need to pick pointless fights with people on twitter and other places, because I otherwise love hearing whatever he has to say.
I think we can all agree that Ian pretty much has a great portrayal of the char and if she was better handled, something like that could've/should've been hard canon.Β

Hmm, if it was a mostly positive review or whatever of Other M, I think I shall have to find that I can never find enough positive thoughts on it, or at least people who are willing to give it a fair chance...regardless of what anyone might have to say about the story or characters or anything like that, I've definitely loved the gameplay and in that respect I think it's one of the better Metroid games I've played.
Beyond the name I am not familiar with the Persona series at all >_>
