Description
"And his fate was sealed — with a kiss..."The Director's Cut of Watchmen is out in selected theatres this weekend and I plan to watch it with a group of friends this afternoon! I can't wait! I'm so excited! I was hoping to get a coloured picture up in time, but it's been exceedingly difficult to do anything in Photoshop with one working hand. That's okay. I don't need to rush anymore. Therefore, I'm going to upload this piece for the time being. This particular was technically going to be one I was going to post this weekend, but it was suppose to go through a tighter rough to fix the flaws, do a clean up, and then get it coloured, but I ended up breaking my arm instead as you know, arggghhhh! I'll be do a better version of this once my arm heals, so don't worry. (So many flaws!)
Rorschach in Gotham, at its heart, is a "character study" of him, peeling the many layers of his psyche and revealing more and more of his character as Rorschach faces each character in the Batman-verse. Since its conception, I've always wanted to draw this particular scene: A number of gory murders of wealthy industrialists crop up across Gotham City, where plant-like symbionts placed in the stomachs of the victims grow and grow until the victim's body literally bursts open and rips apart from the inside out! However, tempers boil between Rorschach and Catwoman and Rorschach goes off to find Poison Ivy on his own and gets in over his head. He gets captured and Poison Ivy gives Rorschach a toxic kiss, tongue and all, and makes Rorschach her slave, controlling him through her potent pheromones. Out of all the Bat-villains, Poison Ivy would probably mess up Rorschach the most, in the worst possible way — not physically, but psychologically. To lose control of himself, to have no will of his own, to be ensnared, controlled, and rendered completely helpless by a woman — to become a whore's bitch — just like he was as a child with his mother...
Making characters kiss and not make it look stupid is sooooo hard to do, ugh! (Strangely, anthros are easier...who knew?!) I apologise for the weird quality of the scan. This was done in different colours of Col-erase pencils, to help me differentiate between the characters and the giant jumble of vines, so for both of them to show up in the scan equally wasn't easy. Also, happy (belated) 49th birthday to the incomparable Jackie Earle Haley! You brought Rorschach and Walter Kovacs to life for us — and we thank you, truly!

Generally, yes, Rorschach would typically bit her lips off, but this is Poison Ivy. The second you touch her lips, the pheromones crash into your system, you're gone, you're hers. That's it. And, yes, Ivy does pay dearly for this.

Actually, as a Batman fan yourself, I'd love to get your advice that would assist me with the Scarecrow. I'm having some trouble deciding on his costume. The Scarecrow should be scary looking and, no matter how much you try, a man with a potato sack over his head, a funny-looking hat, and straw coming out of his armpits isn't scary. So I'd like your opinion, which could be the whole costume or just parts of it:
[link] - Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins Scarecrow: I never like this thing. Every time he stuck this thing on couldn't stop laughing because it was just a potato sack over his head. And maggots are a centimeter long and I never found them scary -- just step on them!
[link] - Alex Ross' faceless Scarecrow: I always liked this because there's something about the fact that I can't see his expression, that sense that I can't see what he's thinking, I find super creepy.
[link] , [link] - Bruce Timm's BTAS Preacher Scarecrow: There was something about this mask that was unsettling. He looked like a Western preacher that got hung and rotted and now walks around like an undead zombie.
[link] - Scarecrow: Year One Scarecrow: Never liked this costume.
[link] - Arkham Asylum Scarecrow: I hate the costume. I like the idea of the gas mask because it's practical, but it just looks weird on him. I do like the "famine victim" and the Freddy Kreuger-like glove -- needles and syringes are icky!
[link] - Judgement on Gotham Scarecrow: This is my personal favourite. I love the grey cloak and the hat and fact that you don't see his face; it's like an abyss, as if you don't know if there's an actual person in there or if it's a shadow.
Tell me what you think?

Thank you so much! The explanation of why I created "Rorschach in Gotham" came from an odd dream. If the Keene Act (which illegalized superheroing) was passed, Gotham City, with the amount of masked heroes and villains they have, would be the very, very WORSE place to be in 1977; it would be "Hell on Earth" and I liked that idea. We know nothing about what Rorschach did between 1977 (after the Keene Act passed and the dissoluteness of the Crimebusters/Watchmen) to 1985 (the main events of the novel/film) other than the fact that he was still crimefighting. Gotham has always been described as "New York from 14th Street down -- the older buildings, more brick-and-mortar as opposed to steel-and-glass -- at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November." The Keene Act was passed to stop the police strike and anti-vigilante riots and, for the most part, it did; but Batman would never hang up the cape-and-cowl, so Gotham (because of what it represents) would most likely still have these riots and still have officers out on strike. Not only that, but the events of Death in the Family and The Killing Joke have happened. Robin (Jason Todd) is dead; Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) is raped and crippled; Gordon is out of commission; the mayor is out for Batman's head; the new district attorney is anti-Batman and brings the city council with him; the media is against him; the public is against him; crime goes on the rise when the major gangs/mobsters unify; the Joker is still at large; Batman's relationship with Nightwing (Dick Grayson), due to the death of Todd, becomes estranged; and it's not helped when Rorschach (who is #1 target for the FBI) hitches a ride on a train and enters Gotham and partners up with Catwoman. Poor Batsy's got his hands full. Of course, this is just the background. The core of "Rorschach in Gotham" is meant for something different:
Alan Moore created him as a "Batman" enigma. If Batman lived in the real world, he would be Rorschach! Rorschach IS "Batman WITHOUT ONE RULE." Also, each Bat-villain represents Batman in some way. I thought it would be interesting to see Rorschach in Batman's world, not only against Batman, but his villains primarily. Therefore, seeing him being pitted against some of Gotham's Rogues is an exploration of his character. Each character, from Catwoman to Joker, peels the layers of his personality, his psyche, his wants, his desires, and yes -- his fears! Rorschach in Gotham, at its heart, is a "character study," pure and simple. For example, with the Joker, he's about insanity; with Mad Hatter, it's dreams (with emphasis on his fantasies); with Scarecrow, fear (with emphasis on his childhood); with Catwoman, sexuality; Two-Face, duality; Riddler, pride; Poison Ivy, control, etc.
The reason I chose Catwoman as a partner-in-crime/justice is because Batman and Rorschach partnering up wouldn't work out; they would be at each other's throats in no time! Catwoman was the only one of the Batman Family that could tolerate Rorschach and his constant bullshit. She is antithesis of Batman and yet also his complete equal and, thus, Rorschach's as well. Catwoman represents a gray area in Batman's and, thus, Rorschach's otherwise black-and-white life, where the line between good and evil blurs, which I feel Rorschach needs to explore more (whether he likes it or not). She's kind of a female version of himself -- another dark creature that prowls the night. I like the strange but delicious sexual tension that rises between an ultra-sexual, flippantly playful Catwoman and a virginal, all-too-serious Rorschach. These two....they just made sense!

I think it would be interesting if Huntress, the black sheep of the Bat-Family, would do with Rorschach, but realized he would DIE. They would get alone at first, but the second he calls her a "whore," he won't have teeth left in his jaw.

I think so. With Batgirl gone, there's a demand for another girl superhero. Huntress fits the bill and a lot of people go "Is that Batgirl?" or "You're not Batgirl," which would piss her off and I do loving doing that, which is a hat-tip to Batman: Hush. Another hat-tip to that particular novel is the fact that Catwoman and Huntress just, well, don't like each other. If you know me, I hate confrontation myself, but I love doing it with characters.

So far, these characters are definite: Batman (Bruce Wayne), Oracle/Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Two-Face, Black Mask, Mad Hatter, Baby Doll, Joker, Dr. Harleen Quinzel (pre-Harley Quinn), Scarecrow, Zsasz, Riddler, Poison Ivy. Pretty sure they'll appear: Nightwing, Huntress, the Question, Bane, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Onomatopoeia, Killer Croc, Great White Shark. Still thinking of stories for Mr. Freeze, Penguin, Ventriloquist.
