Description
"And his fate was sealed — with a kiss..."The Director's Cut of Watchmen is out in selected theatres this weekend and I plan to watch it with a group of friends this afternoon! I can't wait! I'm so excited! I was hoping to get a coloured picture up in time, but it's been exceedingly difficult to do anything in Photoshop with one working hand. That's okay. I don't need to rush anymore. Therefore, I'm going to upload this piece for the time being. This particular was technically going to be one I was going to post this weekend, but it was suppose to go through a tighter rough to fix the flaws, do a clean up, and then get it coloured, but I ended up breaking my arm instead as you know, arggghhhh! I'll be do a better version of this once my arm heals, so don't worry. (So many flaws!)
Rorschach in Gotham, at its heart, is a "character study" of him, peeling the many layers of his psyche and revealing more and more of his character as Rorschach faces each character in the Batman-verse. Since its conception, I've always wanted to draw this particular scene: A number of gory murders of wealthy industrialists crop up across Gotham City, where plant-like symbionts placed in the stomachs of the victims grow and grow until the victim's body literally bursts open and rips apart from the inside out! However, tempers boil between Rorschach and Catwoman and Rorschach goes off to find Poison Ivy on his own and gets in over his head. He gets captured and Poison Ivy gives Rorschach a toxic kiss, tongue and all, and makes Rorschach her slave, controlling him through her potent pheromones. Out of all the Bat-villains, Poison Ivy would probably mess up Rorschach the most, in the worst possible way — not physically, but psychologically. To lose control of himself, to have no will of his own, to be ensnared, controlled, and rendered completely helpless by a woman — to become a whore's bitch — just like he was as a child with his mother...
Making characters kiss and not make it look stupid is sooooo hard to do, ugh! (Strangely, anthros are easier...who knew?!) I apologise for the weird quality of the scan. This was done in different colours of Col-erase pencils, to help me differentiate between the characters and the giant jumble of vines, so for both of them to show up in the scan equally wasn't easy. Also, happy (belated) 49th birthday to the incomparable Jackie Earle Haley! You brought Rorschach and Walter Kovacs to life for us — and we thank you, truly!

There's something about vines that are difficult. I think it's suppose to be the randomness of how vines coil.

If there's anyone in the Rogues' Gallery that can seriously fuck up Rorschach, it's Poison Ivy. His little mind would just SNAP...!

I always think that Poison Ivy is an interesting metaphor of the "evils" women can posess. How much a beautiful woman can really torture a person, if she really went for it. very nice

Thanks! Ivy is a truly cruelest of women. She's a woman who controls men via sexuality and mind control. And if Rorschach's ever went under her influence, his little mind just might snap...a second time! Out of all the Bat-villains, she would probably mess him up the most.

I've been lurking around your other RIG drawings and damn girl, you have some awesome ideas. I only just saw Watchmen a few weeks ago, and Rorschach was certainly an intriguing character! XD (The Penguin is still my main heart-throb though. ) I think you got something going here and it looks like a lot of people agree. XD
This picture is made of epic, and your views on how Ivy would be most damaging to him totally hits the mark. I love it!
P.S. You did NOT make the kiss look stupid. It looks totally legit. XD

Which version of Watchmen did you see? I highly recommend the Ultimate Cut, which is an expensive buy, but you can rent it on Netflix and it's the most superiour version.
Anyway, I'm really thrilled that you like Rorschach in Gotham. And I do want to add Penguin to the series and I really want his appearance to be special, but, as a character, he works better with Batman than he does with Rorschach. Penguin represents if Bruce Wayne wasn't Batman; he might have let his money corrupt him, like Oswald. Rorschach doesn't have that relation, which makes Penguin a difficult character to add in.
Ivy is a nasty piece of work, she is! She, like Scarecrow and Mad Hatter, one of those characters that would whose influence would really stick to Rorschach the wrong way. It would really hurt him psychologically and emotionally, rather than physically. (Hurrah! I'm glad the kiss doesn't look stupid!)

Umm, I just saw the new one that came out in theatres last year I think? I'm not sure it was the director's cut or not. Got it off of Netflix too. Maybe I watched the Director's cut without knowing it? D:
Haha, yeah, that's what's so interesting about Penguin. <3 That's what's interesting about a lot of Batman characters. They're alot more complex than just good and evil. And you don't have to incorporate Penguin if you don't want to, you caught me with R.I.G. even without his presence. XDD

Two versions came out in theatres. There was the theatrical cut, which went worldwide, and the theatrical cut which had a limited one-weekend only in selected theatres in big US cities. I went to the one in Dallas.
Most likely Rorschach probably won't fight Penguin, but I would like to make him have a cameo, perhaps as a "stool pigeon."

That Ivy is a nasty piece of work, she is! It's meant to be extremely cruel and unforgivable! But that's why we love her, don't we? She's not doing anything different to Rorschach with any of her other victims.
For vines, play with an action figure and pipe cleaners and yarn. And wrap the action figure up with various tightnesses and lengths and movements. It helps.

Yeah, if there's any Bat-villain who could really mess up Rorschach, it's Poison Ivy. Ivy is really all about control. She's a control freak. She should show herself as calm, seductive, and collected, but her cruelty and coldness are key to her. I'm glad you like it.

i adore poison ivy's pose. and, yes it is so hard to draw characters that close, much less kissing! and she does it with her own flare too. love it!

For Rorschach, with all issues with women and sexuality, he would just be screwed over by Ivy! You can beat him up to a pulp and he'll keep on keepin' on, but you break down his defenses and invade him psychologically, he would just shatter into a million pieces. Batman villains can do something like that; they're experts at it, particularly Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, and Poison Ivy. The former two will appear later in the series and those two really screw him over as well, but Ivy, simply in the way she does it, would totally fuck him over in the worst possible way. So after Catwoman rescues him, Rorschach has a major -- and I mean MAAAAJOR -- freak out!
Thanks! Yeah, it took be several tries to get this and a lot of me puckering my lips in front of a mirror. No boyfriend to test all of this out on.

Completely. Her incorporation is really inspired I think. No way to wash it off or sew it up or sleep it off. That kinda violation would fuck anyone up, but with someone with major issues already...I know its rather cruel, but I am very interested to see this part. And how he possibly gets over it. And how hard Catwomen kicks Ivy's green ass! XD (Or just grabs Rors and gives Ivy a lethal tongue lashing while exiting via the roof...whichevs XP)

Well, to spoil some of the plot: Poison Ivy, after a long philosophical monologue, kisses Rorschach, tongue and all, who feels like he's going to vomit right there! Catwoman brazes in, kicking her in the face and breaks up the vines with her whip and claws, with a "Hands off, bitch!" He falls to the ground looking very drugged, coughing and near-vomiting. Catwoman turns and hits Ivy again and grabs her, threatening her. However, the rescue mission doesn't go as planned. Ivy smirks and "You gotta get through him first..." Catwoman is like "What?" You see Rorschach grab Catwoman's wrist hard, you can hear the bones crush and punches Catwoman in the gut, falling to the ground, and she looks up in surprise. Rorschach is now under her complete control... Brwhahahahaha!
Yes, I am veryyyy cruel -- and, at times, ruthless -- but it makes storytelling all the more interesting that way, I feel.

i tend to torture my OCs so I get you. Ruthlessness is the best tool for authors/artists. If the reader isnt on pins and needles, unable to see how the hero is going to get out of this one something is truly a miss.

tranimation-art In reply to 10thMuse [2009-09-02 00:35:58 +0000 UTC]
Well, technically, these aren't OCs, therefore I have to treat them with the greatest respect to keep them as in-character as possible. I do torture them, but it's for his own benefit in the long run and makes storytelling all the more interesting. Rorschach in Gotham, at its heart, is a "character study." Each character from the Bat-verse reveals something new, different layer into Rorschach's personality and psyche. For example, with Poison Ivy, control; with Two-Face, duality; with Scarecrow, nightmares/fears; with Mad Hatter, dreams/fantasies; with Joker, sanity; with Batman, morality; with the Riddler, ego; and with Catwoman, it's perhaps his worst fear of all, sexuality and intimacy.
If you like that, you should check out "Cause Here Comes Trouble," which has a fic teaser from the Poison Ivy story. I'd love to hear any opinions, comments, and critiques of it: [link]
And RiG does have an entire folder in my gallery: [link]

Oh, yeah. I knew that And I am sure you will do a great job with keeping true to character. That is what drew me to RiG after I started reading your artist comments. (That and how well organized it all was. I adore all your reasoning, that there IS reasoning instead of just randomness and fan service. A well thought out and thought provoking fan comic is a rare thing now it seems. And for a book that really made me think, this is exciting.) I was just saying I do that with my own characters so I know it can be...rather exhilarating, really and can relate lol.
I have also been to your gallery folder, fangirling all over it and wishing there were more lol
I will take a look at your fic as well XD

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it! Man, I'm feelin' the pressure! But I've always tried my best. I do a lot of research and reasoning, put a lot of thought into it, did a lot of planning, analyzing, profiling, organising, etc. I wanted it to fit into the Watchmen world and its timeline as perfectly as possible but still remain loyal to their characterizations as possible. I'm not breaking the rules, just bending them and adding to them to tell a good story that's fun, interesting, unique, philosophical, emotional, and a bit romantic here and there.
(Oddly enough, I never heard of the word "fan service" until a few months ago. A friend had to explain it to me. Afterward, I now hear it everywhere.)
Unfortunately, the fic is not done yet. But I hope it will be soon. But I'm terribly slow writer. I labour over paragraphs and sentences for hours on end. I just want it to be perfect as I can get it.
