Description
"You are part of the night, just like me. We're not afraid of the dark — we come alive in it — we're thrilled by it..."I have severe night terrors and, as a result, I have very few dreams (and nightmares) that I will actually remember when I awake the next day. My dreams always have this strange film-like quality. And I had the weirdest dream last night and woke up on the wrong side of the bed, with a terrible back pain and stomach craps, and yet, like most of my intense dreams, it will nag and eat away at me until I draw them out! The product was Rorschach in Gotham. It's a working title, but it really says it all.
Taking place during the passing of Keene Act to illegalise costumed crime-fighting, Nite Owl II has been missing for three days. The Crimebusters (...uh, Watchmen) have broken up and carried on a lacklustre search for their comrade, so Rorschach takes his own line of investigation to find his only true friend and the clues lead him to Gotham City, perhaps with a little help from a costumed cat burglar. (This is a conceptual plot and it's subject to change.)
For those who don't know, I'm a huge Batman fan and Watchmen fan. I may do a short comic on this, a short story, or a full-on fiction; or it could be a collection of vignettes of him fighting Gotham Rogues' Gallery — or Batman himself. I really haven't decided yet. Nonetheless, I certainly love how this drawing came, so I'm going to fix the proportions (majorly!), draw some word balloons (maybe!), sketch in a background (gasp!), clean it up, and colour it — and we'll see how it goes from there. (I'm trying to do this by incorporating the 90s Batman: The Animated Series "dark noir" style, but I don't think I'm succeeding at all. It still looks too much like my own overtly cartoony style.)
Medium - HB and 2B mechanical pencil.

i love rorschach and id love to see him with someone but i cant picture him with anyone not even catwoman.i dont think hed even work with her just because shes so crafty and only help if she gets something out of it. i dont think hed ever be able to be in a relationship hes to obsessed with his work to put too much time effort or emotion into a relationship. also i picture if catwoman tried to kiss him or come onto him at all hed snap her neck lmao he just has such strong convictions about crime and he doesnt like games so he wouldnt even waste his time on her.
great picture though, i like how its drawn.thats my favorite style of catwoman

I'm glad you like the picture, even though you disliked the idea. I appreciate the honesty, but I will defend myself and idea.
Rorschach's character is FULL of hypocrisies! He's not has black and white as he says he is. Rorschach, technically, would never harm women. Yes, he dislikes and distrusts women; but throughout the entire novel, he never harms a single woman. All of Rorschach's victims are men; he ONLY punishes me. He leaves women completely alone. For example, prostition is a crime. But he ignores prostitutes completely. Even when that prostitute that offered him "Swedish/French love" and gives him the middle finger. One would think he would have turned and broke that finger, but he didn't! He WOULDN'T! He suspects his landlady of cheating on welfare, but he doesn't investigate her. Not once did he say "Must investigate further." He never lays a finger on her or takes the time to search her apartment. And yet searches Moloch's apartment without a care, noticing illegal drugs and that he doesn't have a gun licence and dutifully "punishes" him, YET NOT HIS LANDLADY?? Hurm.
Rorschach is a SEXIST, a rather medivael one at that! He would NEVER snap Catwoman's head even if he wanted too. Catwoman isn't even considered a villainess anymore, but an antihero, a "Robin Hood/Beowulf" figure. She is very much a Watchmen-esque character!
Among other things, they have similar backgrounds: Abusive parents, went to an orphanage, grew up in the mean street, driven by rage and vengence, violent with an ambigious moral centre, emotionally unstable, intelligent, clever, intuative, yearn for love and respect because they never recieved it themselves and did what they did to fill the void. They're bouth creatures of the night, of the meanest streets, partoling them, saving people, and punishing others. They're a kind of kindredship between them whether they admit it or not. In any case, anything resembling intimacy is really Catwoman's doing. Rorschach either responds by ignoring her or is completely oblivious to her!
Rorschach in Gotham is really a "character study" at heart. Alan Moore created him as a "Batman" engima. If Batman lived in the real world, he would be Rorschach! So seeing him being pitted against some of Gotham's Rogues is an exploration of his character. Each character, from Catwoman to Joker, peels the layers of his personality, his wants, his desires, and yes -- his fears! One of his greatest fears or topics that he chooses to ignore completely is sex. Catwoman explores that.

*tries to find all the flaws you're so worried about*
You do realize that you're better then some professional comic book artists I've seen? I mean yes it needs to be cleaned up some (color might help, and some angles are..odd) but do you realize how close you are (in my opinion) to photographic quality? And you're still in college? Hot damn! One word Potential!
Oh I don't know if you know this but they just came out with ALL the animated Batman cartoons in a commemorative box set for like $140 over here (and we're all waiting for the price to go down.). I don't know if you can find it where you are (hopefully for less). I've found that if you watch a lot something it effects your style. So maybe that's a way to do it?
And now that that's over with: I LOVE this idea. And why can I see Rorschach have to work with Batman having a completely irrational moment of wanting to shout "My Girl! Mine!" When Catwoman hits on Bats.
Or Rorschach and Question discussing "Commy plots" while Huntress and Catwoman look on in entertainment? *misses Huntress and Question*
And last but not least, I miss my Star Trek Titus!
*shutting up now*

All I can see are the mistakes! I am my own worst critic! Yes, I'm still in college and I'm still perfecting everything. Lately, I feel my artistic style has been very awkward. It could mean I'm getting worst, or it's making way for me to get better. Chuck Jones always said, at times like these, that you'll just have to draw out all the bad stuff, get it all out of your system, and the good stuff will follow in afterward. I'm still trying to channel all that "bad stuff" out. (kicks all the bad art of her sketch-book).
I have the entire series on DVD. Not the commemorative box set, but the old individual volumes. I thought of selling them to get the commemorative box set in order to get that booklet, but these old volumes have great art on the DVD box, which is missing in the box set. My little cousin Andrew got the commemorative box set for Christmas, so he's going to scan the book out for me; it has some wonderful art in there. I grew up with this animated series. I still love it! Watch is still after...oh, what has it been, 15 years now? I'm OLD, lol!
I'm glad you like the idea for Rorschach in Gotham; it's becoming a labour of love for me, a combination of my two loves -- Batman (25 year fan) and Watchmen (15 year fan)! Yeah, I miss Justice League Unlimited. I've always been a fan of the Question -- until recently. 52 killed off Vic Sage. I WAS SOOOOO MAD! And they replaced him with Renée Montoya as the new Question. Now, I love Renée Montoya since the beginning -- her creation in BTAS, to her conversation into mainstream continuity in Cataclysm/No Man's Land, her starring role in Gotham Central series (AWESOME series!), and then comes 52, which just ruined her for me! What I loved about Montoya is that she was a hero who didn't need a mask. She was herself, doing her bit in GPC. I want Vic back! I want Montoya back the way she was! On a better note, I'm hoping for Huntress to make an appearance in Rorschach in Gotham.
Wait! You mean Star Trek: Titus? Really? I still haven't scanned any new work I did for it. Hopefully I will soon.

Yes I mean Star Trek: Titus! I want to like read these peoples bios and do self-insertions and silly fan girl stuff like that. It's weird but you've got me hooked. I love it. Just be glad I'll never decide to write much of the silly stuff that runs through my head.
I still wanna know who thought making Montoya Question was a good idea? I mean they're nothing alike. (of Course I haven't read Bats in awhile so maybe Renee went nuts when I wasn't looking.)

Awwwwwww! I'm so flattered! That's the best compliment I've had in a LONGGGG time. I'm very happy you like Titus; it's very much a labour of love.
Don't know, don't care to know? The entire 52 series is to blame. Countdown to Crisis is just as insane. It's a way DC can squeeze a little more money, I suppose, as Montoya is such a popular and loved character. If you want to read a GREAT Montoya story, read Gotham Central's "Half a Life", where Renee Montoya is outed. The culprit: Two-Face...in LOVE with Montoya! Back in No Man's Land, Montoya touched the "Harvey" side of Two-Face and he fell hopelessly in love with her. With "Half a Life", their quasi-romance just broke my heart! She's like, "Harvey, I'm a lesbian, a dyke! I like women, don't you get it?" And he's like, "That doesn't matter, I still love you..." Best. Shit. EVER!

I would like to see Rorschach take the fight to Bane- they are both experienced in brutal hand to hand brawling, but given Bane's superior size and strength, Rorschah would have to resort to his tricks and traps, using the environment to his advantage. That, if you ask me, is the best part of his fighting style. The guy can turn anything into a weapon. I have no problem believing that if I pissed him off righteously enough, he could find a way to kill me with a blade of grass. I can only imagine what cruelties Rorschach would cook up for that overpowered steroid junkie...

I actually have plans for Rorschach and Bane to meet and fight and I completely agree with what you say. I really love Bane's character. Physically, Bane has the upper hand. Agility goes to Rorschach. Intelligently, I think they're both even out, but Rorschach is definitely the most industrialist of the two.
The idea runs like this: Bane had did a number of crimes where he steals barrels of chemicals from several top labs in Gotham. Either two things: He needs more Venom....or his Venom isn't a enough anymore. His addictive needs have gone to a high and Vemon has dulled. He needs something more powerful. During the fight, Rorschach looks finished and he took a piece of broken glass or sharpel and breaks the gage on his arm, which controls it, and his muscles grow and grow uncontrollably. Rorschach, however, doesn't stop this. He stands and watches, cold as ice, as he cries in pain until Bane's veins literally POP and his muscles explode. Hurm.....yummy!

Yeah, it kinda obvious. The recent comics have Bane kick the habit and became a sort of antihero, killing drug dealers. Although interesting, I don't particularly like it. I prefer him as a villain, but his stories really funnel to two plots -- hiring to kill someone or he's after more Venom either because it's not strong enough or he's suffering from withdrawl. Rorschach's too new to Gotham for anyone to really hate him. This is just an idea. Personally, I'd like it to stew a little more before a settle on anything.
A friend of mine showed me this awful video where a man who had taken steroids literally "poked" his muscle with a pencil and it INFLATED before your eyes. Ouchie. It reminded me of Bane.
No, I thought your Rorschach was pretty dead on. While he kills you with a bade of glass, I'm sure he could kill me with a broken peanut shell.

EnlistedRanks In reply to tranimation-art [2009-02-17 04:29:23 +0000 UTC]
Well, as long as we don't do anything illegal, we won't have to worry about death by peanut shells or blades of grass. Until that day, I am eagerly awaiting any further installments, updates, sketches and so on, and I would love to see where you go with this. It's a great idea, and it has a lot of potential in my opinon. Couple questions though- are you planning on Rorschach having it out with the Joker? If so, what interpretation? I bet the 'Heath Ledger' Joker from the Dark Knight movie would be an interesting counterpoint to Rorschach. While Rorschach makes excuses (that he genuinely believes in) for his take no prisoners style of justice, Joker makes excuses (that he too believes) for his acts of anarchist violence. They are both violent, unpredictable, and overall completely nuts- but in their own different ways. However, there's just enough similarity between the characters to promote some strange, cerebral comparisons. In the Dark Knight movie, Batman has his one rule- to never kill anyone, under any circumstances, for any reason. (He might torture you horribly and make you wish that he would put you out of your misery, or you might die later because of what he did to you, but he won't kill you.) He has that same 'black and white' perspective on taking lives, except the opposite of Rorschach. For him, the ends don't justify the means, and killing someone is outright wrong in his book. Joker tries to introduce him to the dreaded gray area. Something similar could go on between Joker and Rorschach. Just a thought. This is still your idea, and if you use the animated Joker, that could work equally well. His psychotically cheerful demeanor would play well against Rorschach's unflappable, ice-blooded, murdering nature. Like a certain Dark Knight, except infinitely more violent. Similar enough that Joker would likely draw comparisons between the two. Of course, since Rorschach is new in town, he might not know just who this Batman person is, or why he is so feared. If this comic comes to pass, I think it would be an excellent mix of brutal fistfights and detatched gallows humor. One word- brilliant. Keep up the good work!

Well, I'm very excited that you like Rorschach in Gotham so far. I've been getting a load of response to it and I hope I don't let anyone down. This is particular piece is one of a growing series. If you look through my gallery, you'll see more. The entire kitty aboodle can be seen in the folder "Watchmen and 'Rorschach in Gotham'".
Ah, the Joker. Actually, one of the main reasons I wanted to do "Rorschach in Gotham" is to see him duke it out with the Joker, which is one of my top favourite Batman villains -- top comic villains ever! I decided very quickly that I would have Joker make a large and important appearance in Rorschach in Gotham -- how can you not? And I was infinitely sure that I was going to use my favourite Joker of all time, which is Paul Molnar from the independent, fan short Patient J by Bat in the Sun Productions. As good as Heath Ledger's Joker is, I've been a Batman fanatic for nearly 25 years. Ledger shall never be the real Joker to me because he's not the Joker I grew up with.
Paul Molnar is THE BEST and MOST SUPERIOUR portrayal out there! He is the Joker of my dreams -- as well as the Joker of my nightmares! And if you haven't see it, I recommend it! He is the living embodiment of the comic book character. He looks EXACTLY like the Brain Bolland's depiction of the Joker from Killing Joke, which IS how he SHOULD look. He does have a Mark Hamill-esque performance to him, which I really enjoyed, because when I hear the Joker in my brettihead, I hear Mark Hamill, but Molnar's personality, the violence and the insanity, is true to mainstream comics as Killing Joke, No Man's Land, Death in the Family, Long Halloween, Arkham Asylum, etc. He's the perfect mix of the fun-loving prankster and the psychopathic mass murderer. So, it's Paul Molnar....allllll the way for me, hands down!
Technically, I don't have a plot yet, but I do have a specific scene in my head, where the Joker had infected Rorschach with laughing gas from his flower. And Rorschach in an uncontrollable fit of laughter, rage, and tears, with a demented "smile" on his mask, wailing on the Joker with carpenter's hammer (or a crowbar), unable to stop. All the emotions, which seem dead in him, erupt like Mount St. Helen! To me, it's a very creepy, frightening, and emotional image. I don't know if others will see it that way.
I don't intend for Rorschach to show any mercy to the Joker. The law is too lenient to him; Batman is too lenient to him; Joker will meet his match with Rorschach.
You haven't seen Patient J, you can see the entire 34 minute film here and do tell me what you think: [link]

Holy crap. Please tell me Molnar got into Hollywood. He is one Hell of an actor. He is, as you said, undoubtedly the Clown Prince of all Jokers, and I now stand firmly by your decision to use his portrayal. I'm not saying that I don't still like Heath's Joker, but you are now speaking to a converted man. That was the best short film I have ever seen- even better than the theatrical Batman movie with Jack Nicholson's Joker. I can't wait to see how he and Rorschach play off one another- if you should chose to pursue this idea further, then I have no doubt that you will get major props for it. Your ideas thus far have blown me away.

BRWHAHAHAHAHAAH! (lightening and a thunderclap of doom) I have converted another to the Paul Molnar Fanclub! Join the Dark Side, Luke!
But, seriously, it's he great? He is THE PERFECT Joker -- the look, the voice, the laugh, the humour, the menace, the insanity! It's all there in perfect harmony! I also love that, in the flashbacks, you see the "demonisation" of the Joker that's very surreal, then you snap back to him in the interview, and you have to ask, "Who is the Joker really?" Is it what you see in front of you? Or is it how you perceive him? A clown? A monster? A lost soul?
Molnar is well-known in Hollywood actually, but as a special effects makeup artist; his most recent work can be see in both Chronicles of Narnia films. He's been seen on stage, I know, many times; but in films, he's in bit parts. The Joker is really his biggest role on celluloid! AND WHAT A ROLE!
If you liked his Joker, also check out him in:
- "Batman Legends" - It's a film (made to look like a trailer) using footage from Patient J and brand-new footage of other villains. I really love the actor who plays Bane. He really looks like he could snap Batman like a twig!
- "Joker's Christmas Spectacular" - This is an early test film. You can see that the makeup wasn't quite perfected yet. But I really love the variety Molnar brings to the Joker. In Patient J, you have the "psychotic murderer"; with this, you have the "fun-loving clown".
I got to talk to the actor who played Robin III/Tim Drake and he said that, unfortunately, Bat in the Sun won't be making any more fan films for a while, despite that their official site has photos of Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Cat, etc. in the gallery. Too bad. Because these were a true labour of love and it showed!

My apologies for nt replying more quickly- I've been dreadfully ill for the past week, and I haven't even been able to dredge up enough strength to do anything other than sleep until today. But, now that I'm here, I should respond.
I had a look at the BATMAN LEGENDS and the JOKER CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR; the first one had me gaping in awe, and the second one had me rolling on the floor and laughing my ass off. Concurrently. I always wondered what a serial killer's holidays would look like...
My favorite quotes:
"Look, he drew a little picture on the back... Oh, how adorable! It's me, killing Batman!"
"NO MORE LETTERS! ONLY E-MAILS!"
"THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A KID'S SHOW!"
Mad props to Bat in the Sun films. Respect.
Just out of curiosity, what other comics do you like? I'm a bit of a comic buff myself- I mostly used to read Marvel Comics when I was younger, but now I read just about every comic I can get my hands on. Watchmen, Spawn,Hellboy, Batman, Spider-Man and Hellblazer are my favorites, and I often find it financially impossible to keep up with all of them. Which is a tiresome shame since I love them all.
So anyways, how about you? Any other comics you're interested in?

I know what's it's like to be terrible ill. Last year I had pnemonia -- I have never felt so terrible in my entire life until then!
Hurrah! I made you a part of the Molnar fanclub! Welcome to the DARK SIDE!
Batman Legends is just a great peek into what Bat in the Sun Productions could do if they had the power to. I love the guy who plays Bane! He's PERFECT! It's the animated series coming to life!
Joker's Christas Spectacular is a favourite of mine! I love how Molnar's Joker can be the psychopathic mass murderer in Patient J and the fun-loving clown in this!
One of my favourite quotes: "WE'LL PLAY 'BATMAN AND ROBIN' LATER!"
Other comics, well, I love Watchmen and Batman, obviously! I also love X-Men, Hallraiser (not "Blazer", but "Raiser"), Call of Chuhtlhu, Sandman, The Shadow ("Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men...?"), The Question>, Bone, Maus, and I love DC Elseworlds! As a purist, I should hate them, but I love them! They're so well written! I'm obsessed with Elseworlds, like Batman: Vampire series (what if Batman battled Dracula and was turned into a vampire himself), Superman: Red Son (what if Superman landed in Communist Russia instead of Smallville, Kansas), and Amalgam's crossover comics (such as Marvel vs. DC!

No worries about the late response- I know what it's like to try and do something over and over and over... and over... either way, I think I should check out those Batman: Vampire and Superman: Red Son books. They sound like awesome titles, and I find it intriguing when writers reimagine the origins of their characters. I haven't read Sandman or Shadow, but I have seen a couple issues of Marvel vs. DC, as well as Amalgam's Dark Claw. Batman and wolverine... could there be a more badass combination?
Oh, and one more thing... Bone. Is. Awesome. STUPID, STUPID RAT CREATURES!!! Here's an idea for the most bizarre crossover event of the century- Rorschach in Boneville! Also known as: What was the author on when he thought that up, and where can I get some? Or: Alan Moore's Worst Nightmare.
Also, my condolences to you for suffering through your recent affliction- I have researched that particular bugger for school recently, and... well, I don't like to think about it. At present, I'm pretty sure you dn't either.
In any event, I saw Rorschach's recent meeting with the Dark Knight. Awesome work. I could imagine that piece colored by Dave Gibbons... that's the only thing I can think of that would increase it's awesomeness. You are a very good sketch artist.
One last thing before I go. You know those commercials- "Hi, I'm a Mac." and "I'm a PC", right? Well...

I'm not a Superman fan, but I utterly enjoyed Superman: Red Son and everyone I've introduced it to have enjoyed it! Batman: Vampire is a compliation trade of three books. The first two books are my favourite of the three:
- Batman & Dracula: Red Rain
- Batman: Bloodstorm
- Batman: Crimson Mist
Sandman is very...random! It takes a while to get into that particular series. The Shadow is just great! I love pulp fiction, particularly in my younger days! I loved the Shadow back in the '30s, when he was original avenger of justice, back when he didn't have hypontic superpowers! I love Amalgam's Dark Claw and Dr. Strangefate -- I am paralysed by their badassery, hahahaha!
Hmmmmm...."Rorschach in Boneville"? (an irate Alan Moore throws lightbolts at her from his "Grizzly Adams" log cabin in the mountains) ACCCCKKKKKKK!
Glad you liked the piece with Batman meeting Rorschach. I originally did want to colour it. But I realised that there's really not much to colour. It's pretty much a stark black and white due to the dramatic lighting. The only thing I could have added to make it more intense was red, but no one's bleeding.....yet!
Oh, yes! I'm extremely familiar with ItsJustSomeRandomGuy's "I'm a Marvel, I'm a DC" works. Have you seen the two new ones with Manhattan and the Comedian? Those were great, too, but Rorschach had the best lines so far. I've been a fan of his channel for well over a year now. Season 2's "Happy Hour" was just AWEEEESOMMMMEEEE! I loved it so! I can't wait for Season 3!

The Ozymandias fight was insanely funny.
"No, I'm on the crack of HEROES!"
Also, it might just be me, but I don't remember Rorschach saying "fuck you" that much, or flipping people off.
Here- you should check this link out, if you haven't already seen it. This is a Watchmen spoof that completely and unironically misinterpretates the source material. I almost died laughing watching this. Seriously, it's insane. Enjoy.

I've seen the "Saturday Morning Watchmen". I thought it was insanely funny. When was Nite Owl ever the leader? Hahahahaha! But it's fairly true. If Watchmen was made into a cartoon, it would probably end up like this. Scary thought.
I have you ever seen the B-roll footage for the Watchmen film? Has some scenes that didn't make it in the Theatrical Cut, but will most likely make it in the Director's Cut!

We can only hope to God above that Alan Moore never sees that Watcchmen cartoon... if was was ever really televised, he'd probably kill himself. However, one may recall some statements from the graphic novel- Viedt was planning to make a saturday morning cartoon, as well as a line of action figures. If he ever did make that cartoon, that's probably what it would look like.
"Well, my stomach feels weird and my balls are all shriveled up, so I guess 'scary thought' will do..."
By the way, that B-Roll stuff... I don't think I'll ever be able to watch the movie again without laughing my ass off. It all looks so corny and amateurish without editing and voiceovers. And that part where Rorschach jumps from one roof to another- is it just me, or did he hurt himself when he landed?

I seriously doubt Alan Moore ever well.
Hey, that's Hollywood, baby! It's the B-roll, not the A-roll. B-roll isn't typically made for the film; it's just an insurance in case the primary reel doesn't work. Actually, I wished the B-roll was filming for time Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian) did his final shot of burning the Vietnamese soldier. I blooper happened that day. He had sprayed the guy do many times that a trail of oil was on the surface of that water and he watched as his pants starting catching on fire. He thought of diving in the water, but knows very well that his costume costed thousands of dollars, so he just stood there and BURNED. Luckily, people saw this and extingished him out. I wish that was captured on the B-roll...
