Description
Many breeds of engineered races were created to live on planets by the sophonts of the Zar megaring. Above are two species decended from a common ancestor. That ancestor was the daggerwrist. Before they became sentient on the Zar, the micro-g daggerwrist species developed a symbiotic relationship with an amoebic species. The amoeba would cover the body and provide insulation and extra tool useage, while the body privides the amoeba with nurishment by constantly shedding skin cells. The flying sophonts are dregnauts. The two symbiots have become one in this race. The amoeba fuses with stemcells along specialized areas of the body and shares the nervous system. Much of the wing structure, as well as the gills, suckers, and mouth on the "back" are manifestations of the amoebic remnents. The dregnauts are acually upsidedown by their ancestoral standards.
The sylee has gone to the other extreame. The amoeba has absorbed the body's nervous system and its thinking ability. The body is now a spindly, embryo-like figure. What used to be the lower armored mandible is now a beak with houses the body so the being can slip through any place big enough for the beak.
In the scene above, two dregnauts play musical wind instraments on the wing while a sylee friend listens atop an antigravity craft. The small plane in the background is pioleted by a trasapient guinue pig aquantence.

I like the vegative matter in this illustration...
as for the dregnauts, no hint to their lineage remains, and I never would have guessed! I am fond of the idea of organic nanotechnology (the 'Amoebas'), and... a transapeint Guinue Pig!? I would think that such a rodent would have difficulty manipulating the world around it, unless it makes extensive use of its mouth...
you seem to have mentioned nothing about the schools of flying animals, which I am quite partial too... do they function in the same way as the sylee in regards to their symbiosis with the Amoebas?

Thanks, they're orange floater plants.
Yes, the Zar is populated by various synthetic organisms, most of which are amoebic in nature. And don't worry, the GP's got GEed thumbs.
The little flyers have nothing to do with the amoebas. This scene is set on the dregnaut's homeworld (the one they were engineered for). The flyers are representing some of the native fauna of the planet. They are something of a cross between a floater and a jetter.
So you do understand the sylee are also decended from daggerwrists?

ah, okay... in that case, the 'pig might just be functional... do they have extended caranial capacities as well?
ah, very nice...
indeed, the Sylee have simply been enveloped by exo-amoebas, while the Dregnaughts maintain endo-amoebas.

Sort of. I imagined the transapiating process as genetically tweaking the brain for increased complexity in relation to relative body mass, not nesesarily larger space. The other half involves relf-replicating nanotechnological neuron systems formed within the central neurvous ganglia to fill in the gaps of the complicated areas for quicker synapses. To make the organism self-aware, intellectually demanding tasks are presented the the subjects, like a mouse in a maze, but more complicated. Each generation would receive the tweaks nessesary as observed by the most successful (smartest) parents to highten their awareness. The final stage of philosophy requieres unprovoked application of insight to foreshadowed situations.
Thanks, the flyers represent only a tiny proportion of the diversity of life on that planet of course.
Yes!

that seems to be a fairly straightforeward process, I suppose the simplest solution is always the best...
I would very much like to see more!
INDEED!

Quite. Others may prefere the complicated way, which I cannot fathome, so depends on your phycology...
I have been thinking about my 'alien planet' series. I should really make some new ones. I doubt it would be creatures of this planet, as the universe is vast, so it calls for diversity; can't afford to think in single-planetary terms you know...

I love the idea of zero-g darwin IV animals!
I would love to see some creatures, which were already airborne such as the skewer, trunk-sucker and eosapiens.
Maybe there could be bladderhorns whose horns turned into ballons

I acually haven't illustrated any of the micro-g ancestors yet, but I hope to find some time.
I have had such visions before, and would like to draw them! Not so much the trunk-suckers, but definently skewers and eosapiens (of a sort).
Darn! You took the idea right out of my mind! Seems to obviou though, I would like to see their bladders become something really weird.

Maybe their bladders could become wings and these strange dorsal humps could become some sort of a balloon or a fan-like structure to gather steam

This acually started out as a simple anatomical sketch, but funny how something like that could lead to something like this huh?
