FRANKENSTEIN
Intro: Of all the instances, phenomena, and entities cataloged and investigated by the cryptic organization, FATHOM, few cases are as cloaked in distorted local and international mythology, unsolved mystery, and rampant superstition and speculation alike as the alleged history of a certain German family. A family whose name has become likened to a curse in both superstitious and scientific circles even to this day; the House of Frankenstein.
The Germanic family had once been quite respected in the burgeoning naturalistic and scientific circles of the 18th century. But their reputation would be forever tarnished by the ambitious and radical experiments of the now-infamous prodigy, Victor Frankenstein. Reports of this time are scattered and often conflicting, but there seemed to be a unanimous assertion that the young doctor had...created something. Something that wrought terror, panic, and tragedy to the family and surrounding countryside over the course of several incidents throughout the rest of the 1700s and on into the first half of the 1800s. The final alleged instance of Frankenstein’s “monster” resulted in the total destruction by fire of the old family manor and science lab. While some said the monster was destroyed as well, there were also those that claimed it had managed to flee into the mountains, never to be seen again...
The later claim would turn out to be both true and false. The Frankenstein family name would one again become of official interest with the advent of the World Wars. Of the branch that had remained in Germany, one Viktor Riesendorf had become as obsessed, if not more so, as his ancestors in the more dubious fields of medical and life sciences. There were insinuations he had even located the remains of the original creation, using them as a basis for his own experiments, which were giving significant funding by the Nazi party during their more desperate days towards the ending of the second World War. The base at which these experiments were held was eventually overtaken by Russian and American forces, the few survivors of which nearly all refusing to speak of what they encountered before obliterating the base via heavy bombing strikes. This might have marked the end of the accursed family’s saga, had the disturbed doctor not managed to escape and seek asylum within Imperial Japan, along with what remained of the original creation, hoping to resume experimentation with the allied nation’s aid. This, though, would not come to pass, as the city in which he’d settled, Hiroshima, would too be destroyed, this time via a far more devastating weapon. Whatever alleged remains he’d possessed were presumed lost...
These events would not come under FATHOM’s scrutiny until 1965. Several years earlier, a mental institution on the outskirts of a rebuilt Hiroshima had taken in a seemingly feral child of unusual aspect, presumed to have been deformed via a type of radiation exposure. However, reports began to leak of the child’s unusual growth rate and apparently extraordinary healing factors. Noting the similarities of such characteristics with then-growing understanding of kaiju biology, the child was scheduled to be taken into FATHOM’s custody for study. Prior to his attainment, however, the child escaped during a fire. Despite his abnormally large stature, and weeks of searching, he was never found. While some were content to believe he had fallen into the sea or a cave, there were many suspicions regarding the cause of the fire, and the total absence of remains, leading to the idea of possible sabotage or kidnapping by another party. As the decades moved on, and more relevant projects took priority, the legends of Frankenstein would fade into FATHOM’s more obscure files, seemingly destined to be forgotten…
Story: Over a period of a few months after the botched invasion of Planet X, the displaced Kong, guided by an ancient homing-sense, was well into the first leg of his migration home. Moving from Canada through the American Pacific Northwest, his path was constantly monitored by both FATHOM and the nation’s military, ensuring as safe and orderly evacuations as possible for those communities projected within his route. Operations were actually proceeding quite smoothly, considering the giant ape seemed to avoid large cities.
Operations were disrupted, though, by severe lightning storms as Kong’s trail led into Oregon, dangerously close to the State’s capital of Portland. In the wake of the furious storms, there came a confusing flurry of sightings and reports of a large anthropic creature from areas that didn’t correlate to Kong’s last known official sighting or trajectory. Unusual tremors and geosonic patterns, often followed by fire outbreaks were also beginning to plague the region.
It wasn’t long before a second kaiju entity was confirmed, one whose aspect was so singular it was recognized by both officials and civilians thanks to the permeation of the legends it had spawned. The now-living legend, which could only be called “Frankenstein”, shambled across the land inciting panic anew at his monstrous size and unknown behavior. Military force was authorized as he approached a sizable town, but their conflict was brief, as yet another monster made an unexpected appearance.
The burrowing synapsid, Baragon, had been driven from his subterranean territory and towards the surface, likely by the increase in Skullcrawler activity radiating from Skull Island. As both large creatures were startled and in unfamiliar territory, a fight was inevitable. By the end of it, both kaiju walked away alive but hurt; Baragon sporting a badly damaged ear and neck armor, Frankenstein lashed with severe burns. The human monster abruptly began heading in a new direction, towards the notable landmark of Crater Lake; on a direct collision course with Kong…
Abilities: The technicalities and process behind Frankenstein’s creation remain uncertain, as much of the original accounts and records of time are fragmentary at best. It is easy to see why the result was so feared, though, as the monster’s retention of human form even after such extensive mutational development and artificial alterations results in an uncanny and ungainly visage. Limb proportions and muscular build are uneven and have been observed to shift gradually over time. While this may render Frankenstein comparatively unbalanced, he is quick in adapting posture and gait to suit his physique. Reflexes are spasmodic at times, possibly due to imperfections in his original revival process. Yet he has proved to be quite agile when necessary, his uneven form adding a measure of unpredictability to his motions.
Though not as physically hardy as natural kaiju, whatever reanimating force was utilized in the monster’s creation has granted Frankenstein an incredible regenerative capacity. Radiology imaging of the creature’s body detects little to no excess radiation, but seems to indicate a self-contained and self-attracting electromagnetic framework collectively generated on a cellular level. This allows for the near-instant mending of most bodily injuries, from lacerations to broken bones. Fragments of flesh or organs collected after Frankenstein’s battles continue to retain life functions anywhere between hours to even months after separation from his body. This has raised concern over the possibility of a fission-type of reproduction, though there is much discourse as to which organs may be most pron to such phenomena; the most popular hypotheses being parts of the heart or the brain. Bombing the creature, therefore, was swiftly discouraged following this revelation. Only cauterization via extreme heat or fire seems to effectively negate Frankenstein’s regeneration. By contrast, the monster’s speed of regeneration, overall durability, and possibly even level of awareness are all apparently increased greatly via electrical energy. Indeed, power stations and cables were among his first targets upon the surface, with the earliest attacks reputed to be the most earnest and animalistic.
Character: Frankenstein’s undoubtedly human origins have sparked hot debates over the degree of sapience the creature may or may not be capable of. Even among legal experts there is no clear consensus as to whether he should fall under the category of an animal, human being, or even phenomena. On the one hand, his abnormal creation, continuous mutation, and prolonged mistreatment have cast valid doubts as to any potential understanding that may be reached.
However, and on the other hand, the creature only aggressively lashed out in response to direct attacks. Most of the time, he appeared to wander about in a confused and sometimes even frightened manner, much as any person might in unfamiliar territory. A few reports from people that encountered him described his actions as more curious than menacing. Some say his battle with Baragon was even a deliberate attempt to draw the other kaiju’s attention away from humans. Most fascinatingly, during an especially close encounter with a FATHOM survey team he seemed to recognize one of the agents, who was said to bear a striking similarity to their grandmother, who had been among the FATHOM team to originally attempt to study/obtain him in 1965 and had been reputed to show the supposed monster great kindness. Survival alone, then, may not have been what Frankenstein had been seeking for so long.

Frankenstein ('s monster) is copyrighted by whoever owns the technical rights. Or is this guy pretty much in the public domain at this point? Anyway, before King Kong vs Godzilla, one of the original movie ideas was to be King Kong vs Frankenstein. This and the next entry, if it wasn't clear by now, will have that idea play out, along with the events of Frankenstein Conquers the World. Hope some will enjoy as always...

Considering the Crater Lake Monster isn’t the next kaiju, any hints on who’s next?
