Description
Yongary
Intro: FATHOM was on high alert for hidden kaiju across the world through the 60s and 70s. Any anomalous weather or earthquake patterns were investigated, though many of these turned out to be false alarms. One such incident occurred in 1967, within the Hwanghae province of South Korea. No active kaiju lifeform was detected, though a local fossil fuel company managed to discover a new reserve of oil as a result of the quakes. It was speculated by some that the deposit could be the remains of a long-dead creature, and since no adverse properties were observed the investigation was considered resolved. Nothing more came of the incident, apart from older countryfolk resurrecting the myth of “Yongary”, the earthquake monster to entertain the children…
Story: The rise of Mu during the new age of monsters proved the old stories to be all too real. Among the several kaiju to be awakened worldwide was the monster from the deep rock and sea, dubbed Yongary. Emerging from the drying oil reserved, he destroyed the surrounding facilities and hastily moved to the Han River, through which he managed to escape several missile barrages to the sea.
He was difficult to track during his migration, as he traveled across the seafloor, sometimes appearing to vanish within the thick muck of the abyssal plains according to satellite imagery. He reappeared beneath Mu itself, where he rose to the surface in the night. By next morning he was aggressively defending an established territory along starboard coves of the living island. Over several days, he was seen to produce an oil-like mucus across his body which he would use to mark his territory and wash away in the sea. This substance evidently served as a mating pheromone, as multiple females were sighted approaching the island. Due to complications during the joint FATHOM and multinational naval expedition, the exact number and frequency of such couplings is unknown. Unfortunately, Yongary would meet his end at the jaws of Godzilla in his zealous defense of his females and territory.
Abilities: Yongary’s remains have been studied extensively and has yielded surprising results. Despite superficial similarities to tetrapods, it seems his kind represent a wholly separate clade of terrestrial, kaiju-derived vertebrates, the most likely common ancestor being among the Chimaeriformes, or chimera fish. His flexible skeleton was able to both support him on land and propel him efficiently through the deep sea, and was able to regenerate more readily when compared to similarly sized kaiju. The toughest materials of his body were his tusk-like teeth and dorsal and arm spikes, which provided formidable defensive and offensive weapons.
Though he possessed limbs for terrestrial movement, he retained many adaptations for life in deep, dark environments. His sensitive vision seemed to be rather poor during the day, hence why he was most active at night. To compensate, he possessed an array of Ampullae of Lorenzini across his body, most concentrated along his jaw and horn, that were able to detect the presence of nearby moving bodies with ease. His own body was able to produce a high electric voltage that could be concentrated into a bolt of lightening from his horn.
Most peculiar was Yongary’s biochemistry. His tissues were found to be saturated with a plethora of symbiotic hydrocarbon-degrading and methanotrophic bacteria, particularly within the circulatory, limbic, and digestive system. Hypothesized to be the result of partial fossilization over time, these microbes would break down devoured prey into long-lasting carbon-based compounds, meaning that a single large meal may have been enough to sustain Yongary for millennia. Some of this material was stored in a crop-like organ. Under duress, he was able to project and ignite this fluid in a spray of burning oil from his mouth. This led to many wildfires during his initial appearance in South Korea, and he seemed to mark his territory on Mu with a series of controlled bonfires. In addition to captured prey, he also seemed able to take sustenance directly from raw hydrocarbons when given the opportunity.
Character: Unlike other migrating kaiju, which sought Mu as a nesting area, Yongary’s kind seemed utilize the living island as more of a display arena. Yongary was viciously territorial, driving away other creature like Jirass, and even the larger Zilla and Komodithrax from his selected area. Several times, whenever a new female was recorded rising to the island, Yongary would perform a strange sort of mating dance, accompanied with flashes of bioluminescence and bursts of flame. These displays apparently took their toll, as his metabolism seemed to deteriorate almost to a torpor by day. This perhaps one reason why he was able to do so little against the King of Monsters, though the females were able to escape.
Yongary was the only known male member of his species. It is speculated by some that this may be a form of social hierarchy, with the oldest and most powerful individual assuming the role of the male. Regardless, at least a dozen females were reported, and the possibility of many others scattered across hydrocarbon-rich areas of the seafloor must be taken into consideration. The females seem to prefer areas with more local radioactivity to support their young, hence why many of them have been sighted around Skull Island’s coasts. Though Yongary himself is gone, the species may indeed live on.

I actually wasn't planing on including his dude since I already gave his species a shout out in the SIM series, but then I thought...eh, what the hell? Hope you enjoy this little surprise, and next up will be the 1961 British Mother of the Year...

You do some of my favorite re-imaginings. Looking forward to seeing your Ogra! She was bigger than Godzilla, back in the day, curious how she'll stack up now.

Thanks. It is pretty interesting how many giant creatures weren't exactly consistent with their size in some older films, like King Kong varying in scale depending on location, and Godzilla being stated as being much larger than he actually in in the english dub of the original.

Well given that he seems pretty intent on making his Godzilla one of the larger 'normal tier' kaiju (an Idea a lot of fans are doing, and one I think Toho should actually do) in this universe....I'm gonna assume she'll be noticeably shorter and lighter.
