Description

Jyarumu

Intro:  Shortly after the discovery of Mothra’s Temple in 1961, FATHOM also caught wind of an unusual fossil in the frozen wastes of Siberia.  After an expedition to the rumored site proved the existence of a new kaiju fossil specimen, another base was established to study the remains and conceal the specimen from public view.  The remains were fragmentary, consisting of little more than bits of the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and parts of a forelimb.  Formally dubbed Glacigigas incognitos, the “unknown ice giant’s” remains were also coated with remnants of a fine powder-like material that would later be recognized as homologous to Mosuran wing scales.  This hinted at an ancient rivalry that corroborated with tales told by the Shobijin of a race of demons that directly opposed the Lepidopteran deities.  They called the creature “Jyarumu”.  For decades the Siberian fossil was the only specimen FATHOM was aware of, hence the superspecies was assumed extinct…

Story:  This would of course be proven incorrect during Mothra’s emergence in the modern world.  Soon after their egg was discovered, Twin Larvae hatched and began migrating inland via the Yangtze River.  Initially headed for their mother’s refuge, they abruptly reversed their course soon after unknown particles were detected in the river’s water.  These particles, prion-like in general structure and function, led to outbreaks of a rabies-like madness that affected both humans and wildlife alike.  This was promptly blamed on the Larvae, which were lured into a carrier at the river’s bay with the intention of taking them out to sea to be exterminated via direct nuclear strike.  Mothra’s Temple, within which she slumbered, was also napalmed in an attempt to preemptively eliminate another possible threat.

Far too late, the particles were tracked further upstream than the Larvae had reached, and traced to a large, subterranean glacier that fed the Yangtze’s source.  Seismic pulses quickly escalated until a new monster erupted from the frozen mountains.  Jyarumu, a survivor of the dreadful extinct superspecies of Shobijin myth and Siberian fossils, was awakened.

Sensing the distressed cries of the Larvae, he made a beeline for the Chinese coast, easily avoiding and dispatching all attempted aircraft bombardments.  As he flew, he brought ruination to ecosystems via drastic temperature drops and maddening sickness via shed powder-like scales that broke down into the prion-like disease strain.  He soon reached his goal and made short work of the carrier.  The Larvae barely managed to avoid being skewered long enough for the dark monster to be intercepted by their reawakened mother.  His attention now on her, Mothra led Jyarumu away from her offspring to battle inland over the Himalayas.  Unfortunately, he was able to damage her wings enough to send her plummeting into a frozen valley.  Landing himself caused a landslide sufficient to bury the downed Lepidopteran.

Thinking his hated nemesis defeated, Jyarumu proceeded toward Beijing, where the Twin Larvae had headed upon sensing the location of the Shobijin.  The Larvae tried their best to shield the city under a protective layer of silk, but Jyarumu kept cutting his way through in pursuit of them.  The tides turned when Mothra, on her second wind, reappeared to stop him.  The areal battle was ended when both Larvae were able to muster enough force to fire silk strands with crystalized harpoon-like tips through Jyarumu’s wings, tearing the membranes apart.  Even grounded, he did not hesitate in pursuing the Larvae.  He was only stopped for good by a sting through the skull by Mothra.

Jyarumu’s remains underwent significant disintegrated via Mothra’s venom.  His effect on the environment and lifeforms were also quickly nullified by Mothra’s passing.  In the months following the cleanup of the battle, most of the skeleton was disassembled and disposed at a classified location in the ocean, whereas the parts kept for study were relocated by FATHOM to an equally classified base.

Abilities:  Due to his highly derived morphology, assigning Jyarumu to any known group of vertebrates is difficult.  Recent FATHOM publications seem to ally him most prominently with synapsids, or at least very basal amniotes.  What is clear is his kind clearly evolved with combat in mind; his sturdy yet slight frame optimized primarily for offensive attacks.  His armored head tapered into a large blade-like horn that penetrated stone and kaiju hides alike, along with his crushing, jagged jaws.  Armored scutes covered much of his dorsal surface in a chainmail of flexible armor.  His wings were lined with sharpened biometallic growths that enabled them to function much like giant swords during flight as well as in closer melee strikes on the ground.  Though not as swift as the likes of Rodan, Jyarumu was highly maneuverable on both the ground and in the air, likely evolved to keep pace with creatures like Mothra.

Most notable was Jyarumu’s inverse metabolistic processes.  Surrounded by a highly variable electromagnetic field like most kaiju, his acted upon the environment like a siphon, drawing in ambient energy to fuel himself.  This would significantly lower the temperature within a kilometer of Jyarumu’s presence.  He was also able to utilize his internal cooling system in a concentrated blast of subzero radiation from his mouth.  This “frost breath” was able to significantly damage even Mothra’s highly insulated wings.  Inversely, Jyarumu tracked targets via thermal heat signatures, detected with highly developed thermal pits in place of eyes.  He would be drawn to attack anything with a significant heat signature in his field of influence, possibly perceiving anything powerful enough to resist his energy-draining field as an enemy.  The prion-disease that emanated from his body is thought to have been a byproduct of his unusual metabolism.  He himself did not seem to be exempt from the substance’s influence, as he displayed abnormally high levels of aggression to any living thing he perceived.

Character:  While all life competes with other forms to some degree, Jyarumu and his kind seem to have taken this to a wholly unprecedented level.  The prion-substance likely originated as a disease within the ancestral population.  However, instead of evolving a resistance to it, Jyarumu’s kind appear to have embraced it, selecting for members able to process and contain it, eventually producing more and more potent strains themselves.  They used their frenzied aggression to savagely attack other kaiju and creatures, and eventually even spread the sickness to others as a way of thinning and selecting their own competition.  Other creatures would either kill each other off, or attack and contribute in selecting for more powerful, aggressive, and virulent Jyarumu.  Combined with their energy-draining metabolisms, this superspecies could’ve easily out-competed and eradicated most life on Earth if they ever became numerous.  They never did, though, and it is thought that their menace could’ve been partly responsible for the evolution of Mothra’s species, ironically leading to their own downfall.

-----------------------------------------------

Welp, figure it's about time I stop stalling and get on with the show. This first segment of the continued KR series won't be a very long one; mostly featuring kaiju mentioned but not seen in the last series before the next part of the story.  And since I don't have all of the profiles completed yet, I'm afraid after a point I won't be able to regularly upload them like last time, but things will be able to flow naturally from there.  As always, I hope you enjoy, and have a nice day.

i just found out a very recent Kaiju that could have a take for KR, it's Khanivore from Love Death & Robots, which is a genetically engineered monster.

a KR version of Khanivore could be some kind of tetrapod Dunkleosteus with a mix of spiky teeth and bony jaws, it's armored skin reminded me of these primordial fish.

Yeah, Jyarumu is more on the obscure side as far as Godzilla lore.

Do you think that you’ll be able to upload new entries at any kind of consistent rate, like you’ve done in the past? And if so when should I expect to look for new entries?

I hope to have one out sometime at least every week.  But I'm afraid I can't guarantee anything more detailed than that.  I still have work and other projects to consider, but KR will continued to the best of my abilities.

I've been reading through all of your works on Kaiju Revolution while listening to Pacific Rim's soundtrack, i only have one thing to say. You made me love and appreciates the potential of this Kaiju universe you're making.

Transapient In reply to Arowe01 [2019-06-10 19:14:20 +0000 UTC]

Not this one, no.  Jyarumu first appeared in a 1998 video game called Godzilla: Trading Battle, and to my knowledge has not appeared in any other media since.  The new Titans seen on screen in KOTM include Behemoth (the mammoth-ape), Scylla (the squid-spider), Methuselah (the living mountain), and an unspecified new Muto.  There are others listed around the world, but I think those are the only new ones seen on screen.

Nice!

I'm guessing Jyarumu is a MUTO relative going by some of its similarities.

Heck yeah! You just made my day! This is a great and unique twist on Jyarumu. I love the influences from the Mutos and the Gore Magala. Speaking of which, will the Mutos appear in KR later down the line or is Jyarumu this universe's version of them?

Dang, this isn't how I pictured Jyarumu at ALL but I am not complaining. I love that they're the MUTO's stand-in to the Vagnosaurs being the Skullcrawlers.

This amazing to say the very least, even then it is an understatement. Your combination and utilization of elements of the Jyarumu and MUTO honestly is something to be admired with this. As a fellow fan of kaiju, I tip my hat to you sir.

looks like a MUTO, but i bet the actual MUTOs would be very different then since these are not vertebrates, while Jyarumu is a vertebrate, anyway great work!.

i'm waiting for Zilla, Komodithrax and others.

wait a second, you have revealed that most Kaijus have an electromagnetic field of their own, and i thought Ghidorah and Jyarumu only had these fields, you better need to write a journal entry on every electromagnetic field that most Kaijus use, these might have different features depending on the Kaiju.
