Description

Mothra Larva

Intro:  The worship of strange, animalistic deities amongst aberrant cults and sects is a recurring phenomenon throughout human history.  Such obscure cycles of myth, forgotten by most of the world, became the basis of many secret investigations after the covert discovery and coverup of Godzilla in 1954.  Some of the oddest of these lost, rumored cults, particularly around the southeastern Asiatic regions, were said to have revered a “Goddess of Divine Rebirth and Peace”.  But little knowledge could truly be gained from such legends, as such cults and their texts (if they had any) were persecuted extensively by more orthodox philosophies.  Of what little that could be recovered, the name most often alluded to in connection with this goddess was “Mosura”, translated roughly to English as “Mothra”.  The exact nature of this ancient beast-god would remain unknown until her rebirth into the modern world…

Story:  In 1961, a secret expedition into an isolated valley in the eastern Himalayan foothills uncovered evidence of a previously unknown and very ancient, possibly stone-age society.  The most notable and intact ruin was an immense underground temple.  Much of the interior was filled by a gargantuan cocoon-like structure.  On and around this structure were many cave paintings, which seemed to depict battling gods or monsters, mostly represented as impossibly large moths and blade-headed dragon-like creatures.  This site, which would come to be known as the “Temple of the Moth”, would serve as a base of operations for important kaiju-related research in the decades to come.  Readings indicated a state of deep stasis, and life signals began to increase year by year…

In 2021, a year after Godzilla and Anguirus’ battle, a Chinese mining company, after thinking they’d struck a deposit of rare metals on a small Pacific island, discovered a large ovoid structure which was soon determined to be a sort of egg.  Before any action could be taken by proper research teams, the egg was seized as property of the Chinese government.  Halfway through its’ excavation, though, the egg hatched, spawning two caterpillar-like larvae.  The Larvae immediately began consuming the island’s trees as food, but were otherwise reported as being very docile.  They stripped the island quickly, and soon began swimming towards the Chinese mainland, and entered the Yangtze river.

Efforts at deterring their course were ineffective, and only became more difficult as they moved up the river towards more populated areas and nature preserves.  Though they continued eating and growing at a near constant rate, they seemed to avoid most human populations, only becoming agitated when attacked.

Just as it seemed nothing would deter them, they abruptly began to retreat downstream after a few hundred miles inland.  At about the same time, there came mounting reports of outbreaks of a new kind of maddening, rabies-like disease among wildlife and humans.  It seemed to be caused by toxic, prion-like particles, and was spreading outwards from the river.  The Larvae were assumed to be the sources.  They were lured into a large carrier near the river’s mouth with recordings of their own vocalizations, and were planned to be shipped out to sea to be neutralized via nuclear strike.

This would not prove to be the correct course.  Too late, a new, unsuspected kaiju was detected burrowing up from within a cavern near the source of the Yangtze.  This, the true source of the pathogen, was a massive, knife-headed creature with razor-bladed wings, and would be dubbed “Jyarumu”.  This monster wasted no time flying rapidly towards the Larvae, whose cries of distress were all to familiar to him.  He had been the cause of many such cries before, and with luck, these would be the last.  Then, the Earth would finally be rid of his most hated enemy…

Abilities:  Mothra Larvae, or the “Larva Twins” as they’ve come to be known, are adaptable and deceptively hardy creatures.  Their thick, armor-plated hides are able to resist almost all conventional weaponry, and are only getting stronger with time.  They are also covered in stony scutes, within which are stored a foul mixture of poisons and radioactive materials derived from what they consume.  The posterior region also houses a large poison barb which can be wielded with great accuracy.

Their short but very strong grasping limbs and multi-fluked tails make them equally at home across land and at sea.  They seem to prefer moving via water during the day while surfacing to feed by night.  They possess an intricate sonar array which makes up for their relatively poor eyesight.  Their beaks and tusks can make short work of any type of foliage and many types of minerals to fuel their metabolisms.  They are also able to change the color of their skins to blend in with their surroundings.  Though their first instinct when threatened is to flee, they are also capable of spraying thick stream of silk from glands below their mouthparts.  These silk threads are infused with sedative pheromones which can help slow down an attacker’s reflexes.

Character:  Like all infants, the Mothra Twins’ primary objective is to eat and grow.  Although this has led to minor property damage at times, they tend to avoid human settlements whenever they can.  They seem to instead seek out the company of larger, more docile kaiju out of instinctive need for protection.  Over time, each twin has developed its’ own personality.  The lighter one appears to be quite playful and will even approach humans at times out of curiosity.  The darker one, though, seems to be more reclusive, and will lash out more violently if threatened…

I'm really loving the way the Mothra Larva look. They look very organic and natural in a very distinct and unique way. The poison barbs and tail are great touches.

Thank you.  I would think they would have to store the poisons from all the plants they eat somewhere.

Pretty cool redesign. I dig the tail and prickly back. Very realistic and actually makes her not look so helpless.

Unfortunately, this particular series will only feature some of the more classic kaiju for now, but another series featuring many others is definitely on the table whenever I get the time.  Also, Vagnosaurus will indeed have a place in the Kaiju Revolution story...

The second one I assume is Battra? And is this Jyarumu creature canon, or your own creation?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Transapient In reply to Cm25 [2018-07-14 21:08:24 +0000 UTC]

That is the second one’s destiny.  And Jyarumu is indeed a Toho-made kaiju made for the 1998 video game, Godzilla: Trading Battle.  That is so far been his only appearance in any Godzilla media that I’m aware of.

They sort of ate, aren’t they?  Especially given how some species of insects can spend many years as larvae, only to live shortly as mature adults.
