Description

Ebirah

Intro:  Abyssal gigantism is a biological phenomenon which has been scientifically observed since the later half of the nineteenth century.  The order crustacea, including crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and isopods, seem particularly prone to this trend due to their indeterminant growth pattern.  It was in 1966 that the first and, until recently, only solid evidence of this trend leading to kaijufication was documented by FATHOM on the west-Pacific island of Letchi.  The highly decomposed remains of what was determined to be a crustacean exoskeleton were found beached upon the shore after a particularly violent typhoon.  Initially there were concerns of an information breach, but the remains exhibited extreme disintegration and only a small fraction were able to be preserved in time for further study.  The accelerated decomposition was later found to be due to a type of enzyme which may have played a role in the molting process.  Though the presumably living specimen responsible for the remains was never located, it was given the name Gigalocusta letchi, though often referred to by Japanese members with the slang “Ebirah”…

Story:  Fifteen years after the world’s introduction to kaiju, the massive living island of Mu resurfaced after a period of dormancy lasting many thousands of years.  A few naval ships were stranded and later their crews and the rescue team sent to retrieve them were caught between a mass migration of various kaiju from across the world towards Mu.  They themselves were rescued and held captive by the human-derived Seatopians, which revealed the importance of Mu as a kaiju nesting site and demanded that no harm come to what they viewed as a sacred place.  Despite their plea, and the lack of consensus among the captives, a multinational attack was launched at the giant anomalocarid, provoking a pair of serpentine kaiju, known as Manda, to strike back.

Amidst the chaos, yet another giant was awakened.  From the dark underbelly of Mu crawled the massive, lobster-like creature, Ebirah.  Although never straying far from the cliff-riddled shores of Mu, the crustacean caused significant damage to several ships and later proved able to strike effectively against air-assaults with shockwaves produced by his claws.  Yet even this was not the worst.  While the battle between man and nature raged in the Atlantic, scant attention was given to other, more subtle signs, until it was too late…

The King of Monsters, Godzilla, arose off the coast of Panama with almost no warning.  Evidently having emerged from an undersea cavern, he tore his way through the Panama Canal and entered the Atlantic.  At this point, most of the gathered armada around Mu was dispersed.  The Mandans tried to intervene, but were forced to back off by a heavy nuclear pulse.  Ebirah too opposed the monster king as he approached, even going so far as to use large boulders as projectiles.  But a blast of atomic breath and loss of a few legs had him retreat as well.  Godzilla, still yet to fully recover from his clash with Kong it seemed, was intent on restoring his strength by hunting the gathered migrants, and in so doing fulfill his role as apex predator by eliminating the weak.  The most brutal phase of Mu’s life cycle had begun…

Abilities:  Ebirah is the most massive known crustacean, much of his bulk owed to high concentrations of microcrystalline minerals within his exoskeleton.  This biolithic physiology makes him extremely durable, only being somewhat more sensitive around the joints.  His shell is indeed so similar to deep sea bedrock that it serves as an effective camouflage to sonar and radar.  Though he seems to prefer walking along the seafloor, he is capable of swimming with powerful strokes of his telson and paddle-like hindmost limbs.  Radiological analysis indicates a diet mostly consisting of scavenged volcanic minerals and various chemicals acquired from thermal vents and cold seeps.

Ebirah is also, however, an opportunistic predator.  He is armed with a disparate set of claws powered by hydraulic muscles.  The right one is far larger and is able to exert enormous amounts of pressure and can snap fast enough to generate a huge cavitation blast which can be aimed with deadly precision against smaller targets up to a quarter mile away.  Though most effective in water, this weapon is also not to be underestimated in air either.  The left claw is slender and capable of far more rapid motion, slashing and stabbing deep into tough hides of larger kaiju.  At close range, his flexible antennae may also be used to entangle and restrain enemies.

Character:  Though currently labeled as a crustacean, a few morphological traits indicate a relationship with eurypterids, though this may be another example of kaiju genetic drift or convergent evolution.  As a deep-sea organism, he grows very slowly yet continuously, and thus his age must be quite considerable.  He seems to have solved the issue of an increasingly difficult molting process by secreting a kind of enzyme that rapidly dissolves the out mineral layer.  It is unknown if this is a unique or shared trait as Ebirah is currently the only known member of his species, if indeed the remains found in 1966 belong to him.

It is speculated that he may use Mu as a temporary mobile home before settling down in a new location in the abyss.  Regardless of where he currently resides, he is highly reclusive but also very territorial.  He is quick to confront any intruder and will often retain pieces of his kills to decorate his lair.  This may explain a few of the most extensive and cumulative “ship graveyards” that dot the seabed across the globe, though due to Ebirah’s relative sedentary lifestyle this might also indicate that he is indeed not alone among his kind…

I should probably just make the upload dates Saturday, shouldn't I?  Well, I suppose it's rather redundant now, because there are only two more entries to go...

a pretty cool redesign and concept you have right there for Ebirah. Especially like the inclusion of the claw's shockwave attack.

i can imagine Ebirah would slightly improvise his cavitation bubble attacks as a long ranged but incredibly short nuclear bubble laser.

one thing, if you do Destoroyah including it's forms in the future, i suggest using many Trilobites including the Erbenochile as an inspiration since they originated from microscopic, prehistoric precambrian crustaceans, as in some different form of life before any known crustacean, plus Destoroyah is like a hive mind of microscopic creatures forming monstrous shapes.

Indeed, I have considered trilobites as an idea for a reimagined Destroyah, as well as them functioning as a hive...

Darn it! I got it wrong! Ebirah was my second guess, but I really thought that it was going to be Megalon. Unless if he’s in one of the next two deviations...
Regardless, I can’t wait to see the last two Kaiju you have in store and to see any other series set in this one’s universe! I really have to say that this is one of the best Godzilla fanfics (cause it counts as that, right?) I have ever read, at the same level of quality as ’s Godzilla Neo.

Another solid entry.  So Godzilla returns in dramatic fashion to start hunting on MU eh? Pretty interesting considering that we don't often see Godzilla behaving in a predatory fashion.

So two more entries for the current series!!!  I'm quite eager to see who they are.

Quite odd, considering he is sometimes referred to as an alpha predator.  Kinda reminds me of the scrapped kaiju, Deutalios, for one of the original versions of Godzilla vs Biollante, which was supposed to be eaten by Godzilla but allegedly they thought that would be too graphic.

Thank you again, and I hope the last two do not disappoint.

I f you do make Titanosaurus, as a future entry (which it may not be) I would suggest using Plathystryx as design inspiration, and as a possible kaijufied family of creatures.

Ah yes, the cavitation blast - one of the most incredible natural weapons ever to have evolved. Obvious pistol shrimp inspiration, and was the design inspired by spiny lobsters by any chance?

Also, I doubt this was your intention, but Ebirah's claws being used as different weapons heavily reminds me of a creature from Monster Hunter that took this idea up to eleven - one pincer was spear-like, the other was a sledgehammer.

Two more entries, you say? There are still a fair few number of classic kaiju you haven't done, so which ones get the honor of being revolutionized is anyone's guess.

Well, Ebirah always made me think of a suped-up lobster...which is basically what he is.  And yes, I did actually reference spiny lobsters specifically for some of the general outlines.

And no, the Monster Hunter creature was not an inspiration.  Sounds cool, though.

And yes, there are indeed a number of classics which I'd love to do, but just didn't fit into the kind of story I wanted to go for in this first iteration.  I had to limit myself to those I considered "good" Earth kaiju to get the spotlight for this part.  But since the reception has been very positive and I had a lot of fun making them, a continuation is certainly something I certainly have in mind for the future...

this would be the biggest and bestest food ever if fried!, delicious crayfish Ebirah!, but you can't permanently kill forces of nature.

anyway i love the ability inspired by pistol shrimps, cavitation bubbles are nearly as hot as the sun, but only incredibly briefly to prevent a dried ocean.

i can see the last entry to be the primordial galactic horror King Ghidorah, for now.

That's a big question in-universe too.  The short of it is, their nuclear-based metabolisms eventually develop to the point where they function on a subatomic level that's partially outside of reality as we know it.
