Description I know, I know. Kind of a weird one here. Let me explain: A while back, I was reading through a comic book forum that was discussing sidekicks and someone mentioned Wolverine and how he always seems to be teamed up with young girls. Someone referred to them as "the Bubbets"and an image popped into my head of Wolverine as a cheesy lounge singer with all of his old sidekicks as back-up singers. I knew I had to draw it and, at long last, here it is...

From left to right there's Wolverine, Armor, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Jubilee, and X-23.

On a more technical note, one of my major goals with this picture was to make each girl unique. A lot of comic artist fall victim to "same-face" and more or less draw all of their female characters the same way, just with slightly different hair and costumes. I also wanted the characters to be more-or-less identifiable without them putting their powers on display. 90% of the fan art I've ever seen of X-23 has her claws out, even when it's not appropriate to the situation, because otherwise you'd have no idea it was her. Some things are unavoidable, like Rogue's hair and (if you want to be accurate) Kitty's necklace, and I took a little liberty on Jubilee's glasses (I grew up watching the old Fox cartoon - as far as I'm concerned, those glasses are part of her face.), but I'm still pretty happy with how it all came out.

Well done! I can actually identify each and every single one of them. And I know how hard it can be to draw a different face for everyone.

I can just picture them on a talent competition TV show... Having Dazzler and Lila as the judges may not help with this act, though.

I love how some of the Bubbets have a look on their faces that says "I can't believe Logan talked me into doing this."

I can totally see Wolverine as an Elvis impersonator, and this made me laugh like a maniac. It is odd how he seems to collect these under-age teen girl sidekicks - almost creepy. In fact I used a line like that in a fanfic I wrote: Jubilee observed that Wolverine collected sidekicks like batman - only not so pervy.

I approve of this in *so* many ways!!

And kudos to you for noticing & not falling prey to 'same face'. It's one of my biggest gripes when it comes to comic art---when the colorist is left to separate & identify the characters by hair & eye color.

Great piece & worth a good laugh!

x 1,000,000 Great idea and overall execution. I figured out who most of the Bubetts were without looking at what you'd written.

Thanks! I think the trickiest one for me was Armor. She's the one I know the very least about. I vaguely remember her from Wheadon's run on Astonishing X-Men and I've heard other people talk about her, but that's about it.

This is absolutely bizarre. I love Wolvie as a lounge singer. He has a certain cheesy Wayne Newton flair here, or even Tom Jones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TravisTheGeek In reply to originalceenote [2011-06-29 19:06:05 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. I've always thought Wolverine has the potential to be kind of a cheesy character, depending on who and how he's written. He can be absolutely awesome, but IMO some writers push him to far and it just gets silly. That's at least part of the inspiration for this one.

Thanks. I'm afraid I don't really get the link, though. If you could explain a little further, I'd welcome the tip.

Creshosk In reply to TravisTheGeek [2011-06-29 07:51:54 +0000 UTC]

A lot of artists make the mistake of making asian characters look non-asian. This is generally due to smaller details that the artist might not be aware of.

One such small detail is the epicanthal folds. One small way to help acheive this is to simply not draw the lacrimal caruncle as it would be covered by the epicanthal folds.

Another thing that can help is not drawing the upper eyelid defining line. Often times asian people will have blepharoplasty to make them look more American. Jackie Chan is one such person: [link]

They also have less pronounced(thinner and/or shallow) nasal bridges, ehich can be drawn by making them thiner or not including the nasal bridge line.

I know it sounds kina weird to improve on drawing by not drawing.

TravisTheGeek In reply to Creshosk [2011-06-29 17:14:34 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, there was a time where that might have sounded weird, but I've actually been thinking about simplifying my line work lately - or, I guess, making more effective use of each line. Hard to explain, but I think I get what your saying.

But, yeah, thanks for the tip. I'll be definitely keep that in mind next time.
