Description
Just a fun little image of cartoon Starfire reacting to the new comic Starfire in "Red Hood and the Outlaws". For my non-comic-fan friends, here's a pretty good explanation of what's going on: [link]Much smarter and more insightful people then I have already weighed in on the controversy, so I won't really get into it too much here. You can take from this image what you will. I just thought it would be funny picture to draw.
PS - Oh, and credit to the original artist for the comic covers and posters.

I love the look on her face, so perfectly captures what the rest of us were and are still thinking.

And it's really saying a lot considering how out there pre-New 52 comic Starfire already was. I'm sure cartoon Starfire would be pretty shocked all around.

The "Red Hood" Starfire isn't that far removed from the original "Comics Code" version: she's from a warrior culture and wasn't raised in a culture heavily influenced by Christian beliefs. The comic book version has long been portrayed - within the limits of both the Comics Code and the era - as having no nudity taboo and being liberated sexually. All the reboot really did was intensify those qualities in the name of "edginess."
Having said that, DC Comics really dropped the ball by not realizing that an entire generation of Starfire fans were raised on the CN version and would be alienated by her reboot because it was so contrary to the Starfire they knew and loved. For an industry struggling to get younger generations interested in comic books when video games and the prevalence of the internet are so seductive options, they really blew this one from a strategic perspective.

Exactly my thoughts when I read red hood and the outlaws -_- I wouldn't be surprised if hundreds of parents and kids started complaining about it.

Back to topic:
Great picture - you've put much effort into it, particularly with the colouring and drawing and DETAIL - but it's difficult for me to think of that as the TT Star. She looks... well, muscular! Not a bad thing at all...
But THIS NEEDS MORE ANIME injected into it. xD
I guess that's just me - when I thought of something like this I thought of basic toon-like sketches - mainly chibified - of various facial expressions. I'm far lazier than you. xD

YEEEEEEEEES
I HAD AN IDEA LIKE THIS
what is she thinking? Too realistic expression :S
She looks surprised to say the least.

LOL So true.
I reckon that Starfire from CN was FAR more popular than Starfire from RHatO. Teen Titans cartoon = utterly hilarious. Teen Titans Starfire = Comic relief mixed with badass warrior powers mixed with boundless love for AAAAALL but particularly Dick Grayson. Theirs is the one and only romantic relationship I'd permit on that show mainly because Robin without Starfire would be deadly boring. He's way too much like Batman. And Robin with Raven, a popular fan pairing, would be so monotonous that I'd have to shoot myself for the emo.
Then I look up my favourite Teen Titans after a friend reboots my interest in the cartoon AT 16 YEARS OLD and find out about Comic Starfire. Then I wish that Wikipedia didn't exist.

Think Kory's new traits are weird??? Look at what's happening to Beast Boy.
Anywho, like your still and humor. In fact, this piece gave me the idea for this one of my own.

Wow... That's really... something. Changing Beast Boy's colors is just so arbitrary.
I like your drawing, though.

I will weigh into this-the concern from these people is bogus and stupid in the extreme.
Starfire (from the first) was always someone different from people on Earth, by virtue of being an alien. It was evident in the way she dressed in the original The New Teen Titans book, and also the way she frolicked nude all by herself in the pool in the first issue of Titans; to see her be with different men is not really or should be considered shocking. The people who are behind all this boo-hoo bitching have obviously only seen the overrated cartoon (which, although I like it, is not really Teen Titans for those who grew up reading the characters) and think that Starfire is the girl from that show. They are wrong; any alien who dresses like she does in the original comic book is obviously not like the naive waif seen in on the cartoon.
If the people who complained are always going to be like this, it's no wonder North American animation is losing out to Japanese animation despite the recent upheavals in that industry-I would recommend that they try and prepare their kids for a world where things aren't so black and white, and is in actuality quite hard to survive in in fact.
I would respectfully also suggest that with regards to this unneeded and unwanted controversy over how Starfire is depicted, the the people in question stick to reading the old Teen Titans Go! comic books and the the current Tiny Titans books-perhaps that's all that their minds can handle. Even better, some recent words on the subject by a fellow Deviant named Thrakki might help to educate them further.

I sincerely hope that's not actually Starfire, and either Blackfire or some random Tamaranian disguised as her. Otherwise someone TOTALLY messed up her character.

Oy, tell me about it. I've heard a lot of people calling for it to be Blackfire, which DC has supposedly denied, I guess. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if they changed their minds considering people's reactions.

As of the latest interview with the writer, he's sticking to his guns and saying this is who Starfire is now. No trick about it. And that he doesn't care if people are angry about it.

That been one of my major problems with mainstream comics for a while now and one of the reason I haven't regularly read any Marvel or DC in years. As long as they make their money, they don't really care about anything else. Slutfire's pissing everyone off? Oh, well, the controversy is driving sales. Greg Land is tracing all of his art? Oh, well, at least he gets the books in on time. Hey, let's kill a major character every month to get attention in the media! There's just no integrity.

Starfires face is a little weird. But it's still good. Two things. One, I got a great idea on how to make this funnier, care to hear it? Two, Do you draw request or do art-trades?

TravisTheGeek In reply to SmokeyandtheBandit [2011-10-10 06:39:48 +0000 UTC]
I'll admit, it's a bit off. I was trying to go for the more 'gangly, awkward teenager' look (to counterbalance the super stacked comic version) and may have gotten a bit carried away. It's also kinda tricky trying to adapt something like a cartoon with a specific look to your own style but still stay somewhat true to the original. Oh, well, all thoughts to keep in mind next time, I guess.
Unfortunately right now, I don't really do many art trades or request aside from occasionally people I personally know, and even that's rare given my usual work load. Still wouldn't mind hearing your idea, though, out of curiosity.

Oh, yeah, I know that issue. It'd be pretty good, too, but I still personally think the new Red Hood book is a little worse. She had less cloths in Titans, but Red Hood f-ed up her personality, which I think is the bigger problem.

Heh. I've already heard it said that a few heads might roll, but honestly I'd be kind of surprised if much comes out of this. This isn't the first time something like this has come up and, unfortunately, it won't be the last. If anything, the powers that be at DC are probably stoked for all the free publicity.
