Description Siberia, 252 million BC (Changhsingian stage of the Late Permian period)

A large therocephalian therapsid (aka Protomammal), Megawhaitsia partite, watches the eruption of the Siberian Traps flood basalt while feeding on a dicynodont, Vivaxosaurus permirus, it killed. Unknown to the predator, this would be its last kill as the eruptions are turning the world upside down, triggering the most infamous and devastating catastrophic event in its history: the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event aka the Great Dying. The eruptions would continue on for thousands of years, covering an area the size of Europe. Almost all life on Earth both on land and in the sea would perish and it would take around 30 million years to recover. As a result, the course of evolution would change forever!

So you subscribe to the theory that the extinction was primarily caused by massive volcanic activity?

Well yes considering the large amount of good evidence

Personally, I think it was an asteroid. A big enough impactor could actually set off a chain reaction of eruptions, and would explain why some evidence supports volcanic activity, while some supports an asteroid strike.

Death ushers in new life.  The Great Dying would give rise to the true lords of the Earth.

Who would then be replaced 200 million years later when the KT asteroid decided they were due to be replaced by the little furry critters scurrying at their reptilian feet, the same critters who would go on to evolve to become even bigger, faster and more intelligent than they ever were.

90% of life would be wiped out, those that survived usher in a new era.
