Description
Gypsonictops hypoconusNamed by George Gaylord Simpson, 1927
Diet: Insectivore/carnivore (including small lizards)
Type: Eutherian (Leptictid) mammal
Size: Possibly 1.2 inches (35 centimeters) long (Note: The size is just estimated as it is known only from teeth and jaw fragments)
Region: North America (Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota USA and Alberta Canada)
Age: Late Cretaceous (68 to 66 million years ago; Late Maastrichtian)
Enemies: Theropod dinosaurs such as Acheroraptor, Pectinodon, Dakotaraptor and baby Tyrannosaurus; Palaeosaniwa, a venomous varanid lizard.
Episode: New Dawn (Intro Sequence)
Info: Living in the shadows of some of the last of the non-avian dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Torosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Stygimoloch, Anzu, and Dakotaraptor in what is now the badlands of western North America during the last days of the Cretaceous period (Maastrichtian age), this tiny shrew-like mammal was one of the earliest members of an extinct family of small eutherian mammals known as the leptictids, which were characterized for their short forelimbs, their long hind limbs used for perhaps running and hopping, and slender snouts with perhaps a trunk and due to their archaic cranium and dentition their classification and their relationship with placental mammals remains controversial. They first evolved around 75 million years ago in the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, survived the infamous Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction event 66 million years ago, and continued to thrived in the northern hemisphere during the Paleogene period, until they disappeared for good 33 million years ago in the Oligocene epoch as the climate cooled and the forested habitats that they depended on vanished.

Leptictidium's locomotion is still a mystery, did it run like a person or hop like a kangaroo.

I take it that Propaleotherium or even Leptictidium itself will be up next considering the order of appearances.
Also, they used the Leptictidium model for this creature? Couldnβt they have made a new CGI creature from scratch?

Budgets cuts. The leptictidid in the intro sequence also wasn't meant to be a specific genus, just a generic leptictidid.
Not to mention, Gypsonictops is not known from post-cranial remains, its reconstruction as a quadruped is purely based on its status as a basal form.

I'm guessing you'll do Ornithocheirus & the others that didn't make the cut later.

I didn't realize there actually was a Leptictidium relative in the late Cretaceous (in the sense of it being morphologically similar to it with the nose and what-have-you). I just thought the BBC wanted to depict Leptictidium itself in the intro dinosaur sequence.Β Cool to see I was wrong.

The episode stated that leptictidids have been around since the age of dinosaurs, the generic Cretaceous leptictidid was there to visually showcase that.

This suppose to replace the Lepticitidum in the dinosaur flashback?

Ooh, this should be interesting! Why did you switch out Leptictidium for this Gypsonictops though?

In Walking with Beasts they show the Gypsonictops walking on 2 legs.
