Description Didelphodon vorax
Named by Othniel Charles Marsh, 1889
Diet: Carnivore/Piscivore (Prey included clams and other shelled invertebrates; fish; crustaceans; baby dinosaurs and other small prey; eggs from dinosaurs; carrion)
Type: Metatherian (Stagodontid) mammal
Size: 19 inches (50 centimeters) long and 11 lb.
Region: North America (Montana and Wyoming USA; Alberta Canada)
Age: Late Cretaceous (68 to 66 million BC; Late Maastrichtian)
Enemies: Various predatory theropod dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus (especially juveniles), Acheroraptor, and Pectinodon; Quetzalcoatlus, a giant azhdarchid pterosaur; in the water, crocodilians such as Brachychampsa and Borealosuchus, sharks such as the wobbegong-like Restesia americana and hybodont Lonchidion selachos, and mosasaurs such as Mosasaurus.
Episode: Death of a Dynasty
Info: One of the largest mammals of the Mesozoic era, Didelphodon was a marsupial relative the size of a badger and would've been a voracious predator that fed on baby dinosaurs and other small vertebrates with its strong jaws and teeth with an estimate bite force more powerful than a hyena's when adjusted for body size . Its body resembles a modern-day otter and for that reason, its believed to have a similar lifestyle and niche as modern otters (as well as the docodont mammal Castorocauda from Mid-Late Jurassic China), hunting fish and other aquatic prey, using its strong jaws and teeth to crush hard-shelled prey.

Note: Based on the one from Saurian video game and skeletal replica, while coloration based on mixture of North American and Eurasian otter.

Sadly, this mammal didn't make it through the infamous K-Pg (Cretaceous-Paleogene) Mass Extinction event as metatherians (marsupial relatives) disappear from North America during the event, 66 million years ago!

If Eobrasilia is a stagodontid then they did last until the Eocene.

Myony In reply to ninjakingofhearts [2018-09-01 20:59:29 +0000 UTC]

Wait, wasn't the snake supposed to just be a generic snake? Where's everyone getting the Dinilysia label from?

Also, it simply makes no sense for it to be a Dinilysia. That lived over 20 MA before the episode takes place, and on a completely different continent.

The Dinilysia is from the Walking With Dinosaurs book.

An estimated bite force more powerful than a hyena's on an animal that had a size similar to a wolverine's? And to think people say that mammals were all weak during the Mesozoic Era?

FiliusTonitrui In reply to TrefRex [2018-09-02 02:07:57 +0000 UTC]

Ah the bite was stronger than a hyena in proportion to the body. No offense but I think you should update the description of the deviation, I thought it was the ibsolute force not in proportion to the animal’s weight.

Thanks for the source, btw. It is really interesting.

There are a few metatherians from Palaeocene North America, though. Peradectes, for instance.

That aside, good job! I really like the new version's colour scheme. Really points to its lifestyle.

Oh! Thanks for pointing that out! I just looked up on Peradectes! I think I meant that the metatherian mammals like Didelphodon did suffer heavy losses in North America during the K-Pg event!

Anyways thank you for the credit and appreciation of this!

Looks awesome! I gotta agree, it does really look like an otter. I also gotta say that your version feels and looks more realistic than the WWD one. I'm quite impressed by this one.
Also, I didn't know that saurian had a didelphodon.
