Description
I wanted to kill two birds with one stone. Not only does this show and explain the process behind The Hutch but I also shared many very useful tips I've picked up through my experience (mostly discovered on my own). Yes, it's long, but so is a lifetime. In this tutorial, I talk about:
There's also a short FAQ section!
Not only that, but it shows dozens of progress photos for The Hutch ! In essence, this tutorial has been undergoing plans for some months now. Now I just hope people will like it.
I would like to take this moment to remind you that the purpose of a tutorial is to be spread between people, so please do so if you found it useful and/or interesting
For those interested in learning more I am writing a book about portraiture such as this tutorial. To give me ideas and such, please see this poll and comment as you please: [link]

What pencil do you use to get your lightest tones?

aside from white? nothing harder than about a 2b, but i like a bit of texture; i find harder pencils too sharp and damaging to the paper

I guess I won't look through it now.
I was going to do a friend's realistic portrait tommarow. I'll be useful later.
Thanks for posting this!

This is an amazing tutorial! I saw this ages ago but for some silly reason I didn't save it, and you have no idea how long I just spent trying to find it again. It's worth the effort. (:
And thank you so much for the download option!

Do you have to have several pencils and many art tools to draw well? I only have one pencil. A 0.7mm HB #2 mechanical pencil specifically. That, and an old chunk of a rubber eraser. I can't seem to get the same sharpness in my lines. I've been focusing on drawing hair and eyes, but it all seems to run together into one gray mass. The lines are thick, dull, and blunt. It doesn't have the same clearness as the images in this tutorial. Is it because I'm trying to do the work of 10 pencils with one?

Instead of asking me (thanks for asking though) you should experiment. I personally never use anything below 2B or so, but that's just for my tastes. You can usually purchase a set of pencils ranging from 9H to 9B from an art store or newsagency. Once you have these, experiment with them and discover for yourself which ones match your drawing style.
A sharp pencil creates sharp lines, and a hard pencil holds sharpness for longer. Rough or tough paper also bluntens pencils faster. Try going for something smoother. Also work on your movements; make gestural movements with your fingers and hand. Express yourself through the strokes of your pencil. Try things and see, and let me know if my advice is off the mark.

Thank you! How much do you think a set of pencils would cost? I'll start trying to develop a style. If you use digital tools, are there some you can recommend? Thanks for the help!

I just buy it from art stores, but I'm in Australia. It's not a particularly arty area though so I assume it isn't one of those reallyhardtofindartyfarty items. I could be wrong. Try asking around in art stores or somesuch. I don't know about substitutes sorry
