Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!
Another one I've had a few requests for. At first, I thought Nu Goth was too similar to Pastel Goth to include, but after doing a little research I decided it was distinct enough to feature on its own. Seems fitting for the start of the New Year too. I for one think Nu Goth is an interesting look and don't really understand some of the negative reception it gets from more "traditional" goths

This fits me so perfectly ;v; i've always been so old school, in a goth-grunge way, love listening to old rock music...and I love colorful hair, and dark clothes...

Hey! These are awesome. I really can't understand the animosity either - the goth subtypes I most often wear would probably be classed as Nu-Goth. If I'm feeling very inventive, I'll backcomb and go for a proper Trad look with pikes and diy fishnets. Mostly during the day, though, it's simple black with silver jewellery, big boots and some 'hipster-ish' stuff - plus I wear massive glasses, so that probably contributes haha. Β
Though to be honest, I think I've been 'goth' before Nu-Goth became a thing. I haven't met any self-confessed Nu-Goths, but speaking for myself, I really like the ascetic. I also listen to a mix of old school and new music, so I would be quite happy to hover between styles

This style actually really resonates with me because as someone who is gothic but as when to school for fashion, I always combined fashion trend or classic fashion element with my goth fashion. I referred to myself as gothic chic and I was dressing like this way before the nu goth term was coined.

I have a problem with nu goths, since they tend to "steal" from pagan/wiccan symbols without knowing they actually mean something deeper than an aesthetic. Most of the nu goths I've met are jerks.

I am not much of a comment type person, but I have to say, being at this since waaaaAy back in the day, I love these new styles and bands that are Β going on right now. But are not we calling this 'grave wave'?

The problem with nu goth is that it involves trends. That means once the hipster trend is over, nu goth will evolve. And that happens incredibly fast. It will separate from goth scene even faster. That's what I think.

Thank you. I don't really care one way or the other about Nu Goth personally, but I really hate the flack it gets. Like... wow, hypocrites much!? I've seen people complain that it's just a tumblr fashion trend and everything is ridiculously priced I'm like ... Just stop. Now. Just stop. Ugh. I guess I just hate exclusivity in general. UuU;;

I've been a goth for awhile (about 20 years now...eeep!) and my fashion style has fluctuated/evolved over the years. These days I wear a mixture of Nu and Pastel Goth. I find them refreshing and fun. I also like that both styles embrace feminine elements a LOT giving them a dark and spooky, yet softer look.

Style wise, its quirky, classic and pretty stylish and I personally like it. Music wise dont know much, only herd GRIMES which I love.
but the people themselfs? Β most of them use it as a phase "like emos?" and move to something else "like hipsters?" and I think THAT is what pisses "elitists" or other goths about Nu-Goths, its not the modern interpretation of a classic goth but their thoughts, and how its usually just the "style" for them and not a culture or actually part of them.

I still cannot stand Nu Goth haha. The music.. the semi-fashionable clothes.. half of them have no sense of humour, and the rest a very dry one.. I just can't get along with many of them, and believe me, I have tried. Honestly, it seems like they just black Rit washed the last season's fashions so they could be goth (ish) for a while.

I've been into goth for about 10 years (OMG, i'm getting old) and at first didn't like the Nu Goth trend. Now my opinion has changed, I guess Nu Goth is a nice way of evolution. Plus, the style has raised the popularity of Goth as a subculture and new members, which is awesome. I suppose.Β

As a "BabyBat" through out highschool I didn't discover actual gothic rock until my senior year and this would definitely be where I fit in.. Not that it matters, I'm me. Glad to see that you've been updating your list over time.

As a "Nu-goth" I would like to throw in my two cents and say that a fair bit of the music in the scene takes influence from post-punk, industrial, indie, hip-hop, ebm and dance

I can't consider myself "Goth" (I don't have the wardrobe yet), however I am very intrigued by the fashion and culture, and do consider myself a Goth mentally, if that makes any sense. I'm in highschool, have no job, and have a mother who is iffy about my fashion sense XD In short, it's hard to be goth when you're in my shoes o_o
However, despite this, I am slowly inching towards my desired look, and have noticed that I am a fashionable person, or at least some who is interested in fashion, as well as a "mental" goth. With this, Nu Goth is probably what I'm looking for as a gateway to a "well-rounded Goth", because it is both dark, yet more acceptable because of modern-day fashion trends.
But then again, I am interested in all types. In fact, my mall shopping lists usually consist on key items as suggested by you XD
So considering my situation, how do you think I should go about becoming well-rounded Goth (I guess this makes me a baby bat of sorts XD?)

I really think that Goth is what you make it, although listening to the music, reading the books and watching the movies that are associated with the scene can help to deepen one's knowledge of it. I personally like some of the things, but it is the connotation with 'hipster' that throws some goths in to a fury. Some Trad Goths I know feel like Nu Goth's are not real Goths, along with the Pastel Goths. Β

Yeah, I know some of those elitists as well, andΒ I don't know whether to laugh or cry whenever I hear these lines about some of those people being not "real" [insert respective subculture here]. Maybe we don't give a fuck about being "real" in the eyes of elitists anyway. A subversive subculture like the goths should actually understand the need to stray from too strict guidelines better than others... even if it's from their own internal rules. By denouncing those split-off groups that always arise when a subculture grows large enough, they essentially become what they criticize in the mainstream culture through this hypocrisy.
It always reeks of crippling insecurity issues when people become so rabidly protective of what they perceive "their" subculture, as if they had any more right to it than the next best person. I don't really get why anyone should give a fuck about what others do to express themselves. Alright, with one exception... if someone does criminal or otherwise awful stuff under my sub-culture's banner that reflects back on me badly, which could potentially get me into trouble with people who can't distinguish between the actions of individuals and a group and lump us all together.

When Pastel goth and Nu goth first came about, I was a tad bit apprehensive about it ( Pastel goth more so, especially as it often gets lumped in with Soft grunge....whatever soft grunge is, still haven't figured that out) But I've come to like it quite a bit ( especially as I've warmed up a bit more to some of the hipster fashion) and think that Nu goth is the logical conclusion that Trad goth would come to in the modern era.

I think most people just have a problem with its relation to hipster. Β It's a little too new for me though. Β It will be a while before I can get used to all these new goth trends.
