Description Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!

I've heard people refer to the velvety Victorian-esque Goths as TradGoths, being the modern archetype, but I prefer to call that style Romantic as the style I consider TradGoth is the one closest to what the oldest bands, and their fans, used to wear.

As with all my work, please DON'T steal this! If you want to use it for whatever purposes, email me and ask me first.

EDIT: Corrected a spelling error - thanks !

I find it annoying whenever trad goths shun all type of...goth music that isn't what it started as (80s goth rock and all that). Goth, just like any other subculture out there, will always evolve, and what is considered goth back then perhaps isn't considered goth today, or there have been many new meanings added onto it. While many trad goths out there shun music genres such as Gothic Metal, Industrial, EBM, futurepop, etc. I personally consider them to be goth, or at least "neo-goth". I mean, the fanbase for these music genres is still 80% of the goth [stereo] types you described here (cybergoths, steamgoths, metalhead goths, gothabillies, etc.).

I have to admit, I don't listen to trad goth music that often, but I have respect for it because without it, there would be no goth at all. I just hate the elitist attitude I come across when it comes to peeps who shun anything post-80s music and fashion, though.

I totally agree with you. When something starts, it's always going to evolve into something new. I believe if it is Gothic related, it should be celebrated. Now Goths shunning emo and scene for being mixed up in the bunch, then that's a whole different story. But overall, I abide by this.

Yes, I guess there should be something for everyone. I mean, among all the people who like coffee, there are some people who like it decaffeinated, some others prefer arabica and some are fans of cappuccino! Same should be for goth in my humble opinion.

Ah, Emo....totally different story, but you'd be surprised that it evolved from Punk as well. In fac, 'true Emo' is pretty much just hardcore punk with artsy lyrics. Search for bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, or Jawbreaker on YouTube and you'll see.

Emo itself has broken quite a ways away from its original Punk roots, much like how Goth has.

D= some tradgoths consider themselves the only "true goths" its kinda stupid, since obviously goth has evolved like many things tend to do, but fuck, the word "goth" existed before the music D= wtf?

lol Exactly! Goth was the name of a barbarian clan, then became the name for a particular house style.

HAHAhahaha. I see you did some research XD
One of my best friends is strictly tradgoth and I prefer a mix of cyber, fetish, industrial, and dark neovictorian. He listens to 80s music; I listen to "extreme metal" and hard EBM. He keeps his wardrobe pretty subtle; I have no problem wearing bondage paraphernalia in public as long as it's fairly tasteful. We argue a lot about the "what is goth" thing... it's kind of funny from a third-person perspective.

This whole series is adorable and as an 18 year old hybrid goth I thoroughly enjoyed reading someone's take on the stereotypes who isn't active in the culture. It might also bear mentioning somewhere that although there *are* distinct subgenres within goth culture, favoring one style or another doesn't necessarily lock you into that style group. For example, liking the cybergoth aesthetic doesn't mean I never dress any other way. In fact I have yet to meet a goth who actually does limit his/her style to one subgroup.

Cheers
