If it was up to me, this should have lasted for days so I could just break out a chair, sit down and watch this, it was absolutely amazing.

It looks sort of like a giant desert with sand dunes in the sky. Really cool.

WHOA. At first glance, I thought this was a painting, then I realized who uploaded it. I've seen the sky look like a literal paintbrush just did a quick pass on it like that once or twice before, but I don't know if that's something that will ever cease to be amazing. I'm really glad you were able to capture this shot, because that was one day that really had me wishing I had a better camera.
Also, this is a bit of a side note, but I'm suddenly curious. I've heard time and time again that the tools don't make the artist, and I know that for many forms of art that I am familiar with, that's true. I've also heard that said about photography though, and I'm kinda curious as to what your stance on that is. I know that a good camera doesn't necessarily make for a good shot, but I'd imagine a good camera is a pretty significant part of it. I've run into one or two people here that take amazing photos, but they didn't have good cameras and for me that kind of killed a lot of my interest in the moments they were capturing.

Thanks so much.
Having good camera gear does not make you a better photographer, it does however allow you to do things you canΒ΄t with some cheaper gear, like for instance shooting images in low light situation is not something you can do with a mobile phone, but as soon as you step up to say a nice compact camera you can.
If you for instance want to freeze as much motion as possible with the aurora that really does require a camera able to handle high iso levels as well as a good lens that lets in a lot of light, it is all relative to what you want to do as a photographer.
In my personal oppinion you should have good enough gear so it does not hinder you in what you are trying to capture, if it does then you know it is time to upgrade.

I understandΒ heΒ "break out a chair, sit down and watch this" instead of working with the camera, Breathtaking sky, it changes so fast.
