Description Once upon a time, there was a faun...
I saw Pan's Labyrinth a few weeks ago, and I was very impressed. I'd never seen anything like it. It also gave me a great deal of respect for Guillermo Del Toro's thought process, when I found his sketchbook online. It was like looking at a sorcerer's notebook. Anyone who can should see this movie. That being said, here's my little tribute to this masterful piece of cinema.
I'd been trying to work on my Sandman drawing and really not feeling it, when I got the idea into my head to start doodling satyrs. That evolved into this, eventually. I intentionally tried to challenge myself by doing this drawing from a difficult angle. I'm more or less happy with the poses, as well I should be after spending to long in front of a slanty mirror, trying to catch one limb at a time in it because my pose mirror is much too small. However, I'm not that pleased with my inking on this. I really need to figure something out, try and get a grasp on what I'm doing wrong. Anyhow, inking was primarily crow quill, with outlines handed with a larger nib and most of the small details and background outlines done with technical pen. The shading is done in several pencils, from 9B to HB. Again, I used my terrycloth technique to blend the pencil.
I scanned this drawing in stages, as I was so happy with the pose, I figured it could be worth keeping the line work around, maybe to show off some day. Consequently, if anyone would like to color this drawing, I've also got the inked lines, so it could be done without my shading. If anyone's up to the challenge, let me know and I'll gladly pass it along.
I'm pretty happy with this.
Thanks Kristen, for being my cheerleader throughout this whole piece, which took a whole lot longer than I thought it would
