Description
After the success of the D Class Wainwright had five further engines built to a similar design in 1905, these having smaller driving wheels and Belpaire firebox, a further 11 other engines were ordered from Ashford, two examples were given superheaters, but this was not repeated as it bared them from operating on the former London Chatham & Dover Lines. The engines were used on the Dover and Folkestone Boat Trains, seeing use on the South Eastern Mainline, after 1914 the class would be replaced on these duties by the L Class, but in 1920 engine number 506 was used to haul the remains of the Unknown Warrior, they would see allocations to the Brighton line and alongside the D on the North Downs Line.
The engines would be rebuilt, the first following the Armistice, with ten others following, ten members were supposed to have been rebuilt, but this was changed to the D Class. The E Lasted in numbers until 1951, with one 31166 remaining in traffic until 1955, the last member of the class not rebuilt.
