Description ...on both sides.

Sometimes, when I'm outside, I really become paranoid I imagine, what people think about me and my hijab while they are staring et me (even if they don't do).
Then I stop and I think of all the other possible reasons, that make people look at me. And I realize that as Muslims we are often too sensitive and we are at risk to make the same mistakes, that we face: We generalize.

You know, I have many non-muslim friends and I very rarely faced any racist-based acts of hatred. And the few cases were merely ridiculous, alhamdulillah (thank God).

So we need tolerance on both sides.
As Muslims we need to leave behind the role of a victim and be more confident - and I mean self-confidence as well as some more trust in our fellow men. We can't cooperate while being suspicious towards each other.

Please note:
"Infidels" isn't meant seriously, it's not the word I would choose myself, that's why I put it in quotes. Rather I wanted to show, that the girl on the right side thinks, that the muslim girl will call her "infidel". So her own interpretation makes her be offended.

Brother Nayzak reminded me, that Allah said in the holy Qur'an: "O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin..."

haha it was so true :') my best friend for life, is Muslim, and I'm not, I'm a practicing Buddhist. And when we first me we were about 7, and now she's grown into a young woman, wearing the hijab. she's my BEST friend and even tho we don't believe in the same god, we still love each other and support each other! So, don't judge people just because of what they wear or what they believe in!

one fears what one doesn't understand

very well put i like the concise articulation in how you illustrated this normally one runs the danger of plopping such thoughts down like a poached egg when drawing a comic.

We need more understanding like this. I'm sick of people making stupid assumptions based on appearances. And it's hard, because it's something society teaches. I find myself doing it every day. But if we don't all recognize when it's happening, it'll only continue. Thanks for this piece!

I like how the hijab looks :3 does Islam require women to wear them in public, or is it voluntary? What's the reason for them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tuffix In reply to Canvasian [2011-12-24 10:57:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks (:
Yes, Muslim women are told do cover their hair and body in public. However no one can force a woman to do so, she has to decide on her own.
There are several reasons. First, it's a spiritual thing, like connecting to God by following his rules. But it's also to preserve women's dignity and to protect them from being judged by their phisical apperance rather than by her personality.
This is just a very short explanation. If you want to understand more deeply, there is who gives clear and detailed explanations connected to his artworks and his journals (:

Sometimes I stare, but it's because I think the different styles of dressing are so interesting! It's really cool, too, and I know that people who act differently in America (probably all over the world) are subject to a lot of discrimination and, as you say, generalizations, so I think it's really brave for people to wear what they want to! It's impressive.

So, if anyone catches me staring, that's what I'm thinking. ;w;
It's nothing bad!
heheh

Well, some friends told me that muslims talking about "being modest" for example, make them feel, as if they are bitches (arg, I don't like that word) or so.
In fact last week my sister told me about a woman, who came in to the pharmacy, where my sister works in. That customer didn't want to be attended by my sister. However she realized that it took too long to wait for the other pharamacist, so she went to my sister, ordered her medicine and said: "Now I feel stupid". My sister didn't react and she wasn't sure what that woman meant. Then the customer continued like: "Yes sure, I'm the bitch now, aren't I? ..." and so on.
I'm glad she's just an exception, but I can very well imagine, that there many other -especially women- who feel somehow offended. That's why it's always good to smile (:

I love this - you honestly couldn't have drawn out the prejudice issue more brilliantly. Everyone forms false assumptions, just because we don't speak to one another as much as we should...

And, I would have to agree with AndSoWeCreate... I live in an area that's very desolate and doesn't have any muslim residents (or residents of any kind), so when I visit larger cities, (as shallow as it might or might not come across to say) I'm always fascinated by how awesome the women in hijabs look

AndSoWeCreate In reply to ??? [2011-08-10 03:52:28 +0000 UTC]

I hope I do not sound rude in saying this. Please excuse me if I do. I come from a small town in the United States where there are hardly any Muslims at all. I can count the number of hijabs I have seen in person. However, when I see someone wearing one, I tend to think the whole middle Eastern hijab and clothing style reallys looks beautiful. I know you do it for reasons other than vanity but, honestly I feel almost in awe when I see someone dressed in a Middle Eastern or even Indian style. I think it is beautiful. But, I have to ask, and im half joking and half serious...is it hot under there?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tuffix In reply to AndSoWeCreate [2011-08-11 17:31:09 +0000 UTC]

Why should this sound rude? It's ok to think, that hijabs are beautiful.^^

Of course, in summer sometimes it would be nicer to have it off, but in fact it's not as hot as people think. We can chose light and airy fabric. It's totally okay.
