Description Rather paradox: Deliverance through prohibition.
I've had this idea for a long time. Hope you understand and like it ^^

Edit:

I displaced the girl, because she looked very small before. She still do a bit, but I think now it's ok.

People are very tolerant here, you're allowed to have an open discussion and we can all get along pretty well. n_n

Dare I ask? Unfortunately, perhaps a bit more explanation IS needed for those of us especially dull folk out here.

Initially, upon seeing it in the recent deviations page, the figure in blue and green looked much smaller, and therefore I assumed the picture was a mother and child. Upon reading the speech bubbles, however, it seems that the taller woman perhaps represents American women and the other women of other nations (perhaps Islamic?) who dress more conservatively and do not want to be "freed" like the American woman. But again, the height of the blond woman and the expression on the woman in blue leave me still wondering, and so... I suppose I do dare ask: Would you consider a bit of an explanation for those of us who have managed to think ourselves into a corner?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tuffix In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-07-19 22:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Sure, you dare ^^ I must say: I was really surprised, because I haven't seen my picture in the way you do before. I realize, that I should explain it (actually I was just to lazy, cause it's late hehe). First, I can't say anything about their nations. Maybe they both are American, maybe they are German (speeking English for global understanding) or only one of them, who knows? Concerning the height of them: Well, this is just my "faultiness" in drawing , maybe I'm going to change it to avoid more misunderstandings...
With this drawing I only want to show, that I can't understand people (mainly politicians), who urgently want to free muslim women by taking their freedom to wear the headscarf. Whether it's well-meant or not: It's pardox.
I hope, you understand my moderate English.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to tuffix [2009-07-19 22:58:46 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes! Good! That's certainly makes sense. I'm glad I got it at least partially right. I imagine my guessing that the blond is American is my own ethno-centrism. I'm American, so I automatically assumed the woman who was dressed "conventionally" was also American. Bad me!! :smacks hand:

Yes, I think if the second woman was not shorter, I would have understood more readily. Or perhaps, also if her headscarf was the same color as her dress. This way, I thought it was a child playing by putting a T-shirt over her head, and I couldn't see what "mom" was rescuing her from. Sorry! I know... terrible!

But one quick response, politically. Are you sure politicians want to take AWAY their right to wear it? Or do they want to take away their government's right to force them to wear it? You see, not all Muslim women believe it is necessary to cover as much as their government requires. For example, in Afghanistan when I was between the ages of 8 and 13 (that's just how I remember things) I remember hearing of a woman doctor--a surgeon--who did could not do her job because her burka made it impossible to see clearly. She believed it was necessary only to cover her hair, but her government required that she have only a slit for her eyes.

I still agree with you that the "freedom" to go around in next to nothing and be seen as a sex object is not really a freedom at all. I absolutely agree with you that modest clothing can be very freeing--WHEN IT IS A CHOICE. And of course, the art would lose quite a bit of it's punch if you tried to convey THAT, so I'm not saying you should change anything about the piece. Only that... you know... like everything else, there are about a dozen sides to every story.

You're right, pressure is criminal in every way. You know, I'm living in Germany where there are different current problems concerning the headscarf. Maybe that's why I'm looking at the problem from a different angle.
By the way: I don't like Burkas either -.- .
Thank you for the comments, it's always good to clear up misunderstandings

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to tuffix [2009-07-20 02:23:46 +0000 UTC]

What types of problems are coming up in Germany with the headscarf now? (I can't even begin to imagine!)

I'm living in the US and am Jewish, but not necessarily observant in terms of dress. For Sabbath services and in my Tuesday night class with the rabbi, I do cover my hair entirely, and sometimes I stop at the grocery or to pump gas or something on the way home, and for the most part, people act like they don't notice. I know they DO notice. I mean, it's hard not to notice someone being entirely different... and you know, they wonder "is it religious or if is what religion? or did she lose all her hair and if so is it because she has cancer? Or is it just some strange new style? Or what? I wouldn't care if they flat out asked, but they never do that, anyway...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tuffix In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-07-20 09:56:03 +0000 UTC]

It's very interesting, that sometimes you cover your hair, too. Well, the more or less conspicuous gazes aren't the problem, even if I feel uneasy then: It's normal to glance at someone who looks different. The problem here in Germany is, that you don't have equal chances in getting a job or a traineeship, when you wear a headscarf. Employers often (not always!) reject you, even if it's a job, where you have to cover your hair anyway, for example in a hospital. But the most annoying problem, I think, is the big discussion. People on TV and so on talk and debate on this subject, without asking the majority of muslim women who wear the scarf voluntarily and willingly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BldngHrtCnsrvtv In reply to tuffix [2009-07-20 13:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Wow! I imagine if they're wearing it IN GERMANY it's definitely by choice! I had a coworker who was Muslim (and she and I were quite friendly, though her husband didn't like the idea of her socializing with a Jew!) and she certainly wore the thing by choice. I mean, her husband would have been outraged if she didn't, but she made the choice before she married him, you know?

Well, I will admit that jobs and such is probably an issue here as well. Where I work now, there is one lady who wears a headscarf and I've never heard of her having any problems, but I also don't know her, so I probably wouldn't have heard. I can say that work is one of the reasons why I don't wear mine regularly. That and that my husband is non-traditional, and so was I when we married and he would feel like I had suddenly "changed the rules" on him. Also, the wearing of the scarf for us is... dare I say optional? It depends what community and how strict the rabbi and such. And ours look differently as well. We cover ONLY the hair typically, so it's knotted in the back beneath the hair, not arranged about the shoulders.

I do think that's a pretty big problem with the people on TV and such, because they are such a big influence on others who watch and think that they are getting the "truth" from the news. (I used to think there WAS such a thing as truth, and that I could someday find out what it is. Now I see it's all perspective. But younger people, and people who are less introspective, might never reach that conclusion.

Do you have call-in shows or can you write in to these news personalities and tell them your views? Here that would help some.

tuffix In reply to BldngHrtCnsrvtv [2009-07-21 08:59:45 +0000 UTC]

I don’t know such a call-in show, but there is a hotline, where you can complain about discrimination. I’ve got a friend, who started wearing the scarf and who called, because a doctor didn’t want to examine her.
I admit, that there is a minority of girls who doesn’t wear it by choice even here in Germany. But you can’t bar the rest from wearing it willingly. They also don’t forbid eating broccoli, although there are certainly some kids, who are forced by their parents to eat it
It’s interesting, I never noticed someone wearing a β€œJewish headscarf” here. How is it called?
