Her voice was thick, and Shen found himself absolutely unable to move as she swiftly moved forward-and embraced him.

"Hui...what...?"

"For the longest time you've needed something to latch onto. To grasp, in times of uncertainty, a beacon to guide you, a means to brace against the storm of your past. Now you have it."

Shen felt a torrent of emotions course through him in quick succession, fear, confusion, nervous excitement coupled with a flush of something brief and puzzling, a fierce warmth brighter than a bonfire. The peacock shivered in her embrace and tried to pull away. "Hui...this...this is...I..."

The falcon muttered thickly:

"Don't think. Don't do anything. I'm just asking you to let me do this. You need this, much more than you know."

And the peacock was mildly surprised to find himself unable to argue. What use was resisting when he felt like this? The fear which had gripped his throat like a vise, clouding his vision and casting shadows where none existed, was fading. Slowly, his muscles began to relax, and he felt himself easing against her by degrees. The snow still blew, parts of him were still frigid, the future was still uncertain. Things could still go wrong.

But somehow, it didn't matter. The universe had contracted to encompass their small carriage, the raging storm, the cold...but kept out the fear, the anxiety. The stove glowed before them, bright and warm, muffled pops and crackles coming from inside as the wood was consumed by the flames within.
