Description If you've seen Kung Fu Panda 2, as I know that most people who will be looking at this picture have, I shouldn't have to explain to you what this is. But just in case:

"Shen returned to his parents full of pride...but in their faces, he saw only horror."

Some of you will remember that I actually did a picture of Shen's parents back in the summer. Well, not only was I less than stellar at drawing peafowl at the time, but the colors were innacurate and the clothing was BSed. This was largely due to the fact that I only had a bootleg copy of the film for reference, and it was extremely hard to see. Now that I have a real copy of the film, I was able to not only get the colors and clothes looking as close as possible to those in the movie, but I could also see little details that I'd never noticed before. Like, Shen's mother actually has a shorter beak than her husband and son. Huh, funny.

And, PSST! This is what I was talking about no one paying attention to the fact that there IS an Indian peahen in the film when they made their Indian peahen OCs! Shen's mother doesn't have a full crest or eyebrows, her beak is different, and I can say with one hundred percent certainty that she doesn't have a train either! And I know that technically Lanying's beak and crest deviate from the "norm," but she's a Java green peahen, which are more showy than Indian peahens, so I'm intending to keep her that way.

But yeah...the picture was sort of a nice excursion with colored pencils, even though Shen's father (in my fandom, Lord Jin, but I know that everyone has a different name for him) ended up with a really dark face that sort of screwed up the colors and the expression, but it wasn't too noticeable. And I'm sick at the moment, so it came out better than I expected.

I love this and about Shen's mother not having a train, only guy peacocks have trains.

Yes, I know that, but a lot of fans were under the misconception that she had a train.

The colors came out quite nicely on this, you've got real skill with colored pencil and I've always admired that. Dang, I really like Lord Jin's design; I've never really stopped to look at Shen's parents, they look pretty awesome.

This is so nice ~ I love your interpretation of Shen's parents ! ><
And yes, very good at noticing those details ^^ I also noticed how Shen's mom has a shorter beak than dad, as well as the crest too. I'm not too sure but I think I saw her have those eyebrows too. But meh, IDK.

That's what inspired me to do my peahen, actually. Though I deviated a bit to show a bit more uniqueness to her (smaller crest, smaller eyebrows, the not-so-noticeable-smaller-beak), at the same time, not making her look like a freak peacock XD

I do think that it's good to add unique details to your peafowl OCs, because otherwise they all became homogeneous, blend together and look exactly like Shen (and each other XD).

Yes, indeed ^^ and it's quite a challenge to add these details without making your OC too unrealistic for the series

You got their emotions perfectly! I remember thinking that the mother looked more outright shocked than the father. Such a sad scene, but the colors are beautiful and this is a perfect interpretation in your style Simply stunning.

Such a great picture! I love your colouring so much! What pencil crayons do you use? Prismacolour? Cause I can never get colouring like that with my prismacolour, or maybe I just need to practice more...

Yes, I use Prismacolor pencils...please not that they are not magic, and while this is by far not the best thing possible with them, I only got to this point after practicing for six and a half years. Also, I have 72 different colors.

Oh yeah, that explains it. I was just wondering how you got them to blend so well, like with me it looks like a sharpie marker is dividing the colours or something. But I only have like 24 colours, I couldn't get the big pack cause it was too expensive, and my art class provided us with STAEDTLER ones, which are pretty good too, so I use them.

The trick with the blending is to apply each color very lightly before you go back and add darker values. If you put down dark blue and then try to make it blend into dark green, the values are already heavy, so they won't mix. If you color lightly first and then go back and make it darker, you'll find that it looks a lot better. And practice on simple shapes like triangles or circles before you try more complicated subjects.

Yeah I know the technique to shading, but it just doesn't work out for me. Your colouring, not only in this most recent picture, but your other ones to, they blend so nicely and it looks so soft. I guess you just have more time, patience, and skill than me.

Lovely picture! I thought it was interesting that they changed the design of Shen's mother. If you look in the prologue concept art, she has an aqua blue/green train and lacks a crest. In the movie, she was given a small crest and no longer had a train. I wonder if after doing the prologue, the artists went back to looking at photos and videos of real-life peahens and decided that their early design was a bit unrealistic?
