Well, it's nice to start off the week with a new Planetary Series Dragon. ^^
Next part of the '2012 Planetary Dragon Series!' This time, the Cosmic Ray dragon.
Cosmic Rays are really no laughing matter, and are technically not even a 'ray,' but a 'mass' of charged particles that create secondary particles that can go through the Earth's atmosphere. Many of these particles can actually be found on earth, but sometimes these jiggers called 'positrons' and 'antiprotons...' which we currently know little to nothing about.
Usually the Sun, or other distant stars, are the culprits for Cosmic Rays, but sometimes, they can emerge from distant, distant unknown spatial phemonema from the farthest reaches of the observable universe. *ponders supermassive black holes and gamma ray bursts*
What Cosmic Rays actually do is kind of sneaky... In that their effects on earth are very molecular in nature, and not blast-you-out-of-freaking-existence-by-a-freakishly-epic-Michael-Bay-galactic-explosion. The higher you go in the atmosphere, the more exposure you'll receive from them, for example in planes and such. The main health effects are from the natural background radiation that occur in higher altitudes, and actually plays a big role in how aircraft are designed.
What actually happens to the atmosphere is ozone depletion...aka, we can blame CRs for global warming. XD Or something. What is it now, climate change? Whatever. Not only that, but isotopes are mutated, and Carbon-14 is created from these chemical reactions. This means...radiation. (Radiation measurements in the atmosphere are also connected to nuclear weapons, hmm... )
So, in conclusion, be wary of cellular mutations if you live in high altitudes...and also, watch your electronic devices - Cosmic Rays are known to wipe out data-saving devices. Watch your jump drives!!!

Amazing how little we know about this kind of stuff...yet we can still create all kinds of equations with them and reveal other information.
Kind of like imaginary numbers in math.

Ah, seriously. Or at least we try to come up with equations. XD

Sweet work, and great science as always, Twi! You are really smart about all this

Yes, I got it! OK, I love the michael bay smack, that was FUNNY. And also, anti-protons are somewhat cool, they're kinda antimatter, but kinda not.
And - OH PRETTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHH
