The next part of the 2012 Planetary Dragon Series!...

The Wolf-Rayet Star dragon! Watch that dude's spines and claws and teeth and...everything, man. He means business.

In a nutshell, a Wolf-Rayet Star is a star on a diet. The stars are massive stars, usually in the last stages of their evolution, but are losing much of their mass due to the prescence of a strong solar wind. These winds are travelling at speeds of approximately 2000 kilometers per second, and, to put it in perspective, lose about three-times as much mass as our own sun does at any given moment.

WR Stars are also very, very hot, and due to their shedding of mass, they usually form clouds of hot, nebula-like envelopes of gas around them. When many of these stars form in a relatively short amount of space, space 'clouds' are formed, as can be seen in the case of the Large and Small Megallanic Clouds, which contain 100 and 12 within them, respectively. The gas clouds that surround WR Stars are sometimes called 'wind nebulae' or 'excitable nebulae,' and also sometimes look like supermassive nuclear explosions. Go look up Nebula M1-67 and tell me that it doesn't look like the Tsar Bomba. (If you don't know what the Tsar Bomba is either, go look that up, too!!!)

Now remember, even though WR Stars are shedding their mass, they remain just as capable of collapsing and becoming black holes via supernova explosions as any other star. I mean, come on guys, when have I ever presented you with a spatial phenomenon that isn't out to destroy our solar system? Very rarely, I know. (Have you heard the theory that gamma ray bursts are actually 'telegraphic' messages through black holes from an alternate universe? Check it out!)

This dragon in particular looks like he's about to go supernova, he's getting so skinny from shedding his mass, and he's so angry about it! Hence he's kind of a skinnier version of my other super-giant stars, and exhibits similar features to the Black Hole dragons and Even Horizon dragon. (Though nothing will ever come close to the SuperMassive Black Hole Dragon...or will it...? )

Good stuff.

This has to be my favorite in the entire series so far, as far as the drawing aspect... as far as the astrological phenomena part quite a few others are... i do so love reading your descriptions on them!

I love this guy! his spikes, claws, and bladed tail are fantastic! you did a magnificent job on his skin texture and shading and I am in love with the way his head is shaped! beautiful beautiful beautiful! also the shoot off cloud around him is very well captured.

It's an epic dragon ! You should make the development of this dragon as Wolf-Rayet stars that turn into Pulsar dying.

I love how angular he is and that you made him look kinda emaciated (from shedding mass) and still had him look ferocious!

This is not only an excellent adaptation of a complex stellar concept, it's also an extremely eye-catching piece. The dragon's body shape and all that energetic gold and red grabbed me immediately when I went through my thumbnails this afternoon. Awesome piece.

Thanks! ^^ I think he's really awesome too, which is one of the reasons I've saved him for 'soon-to-be-last.'

I didn't know Solar Winds caused a stare to lose mass.
