Description
When you sign on and create a costume, be it a fursuit or a mascot for your school team, or even some costume you create for a haloween party, remember you are creating a character, and the person inside is the actor. The moves you make need to be consistent with the character's personality you wish to portray. Sometimes those movements and mannerisms you adopt might be bubbly, really meek, or they might be full of mock bravado, sinister, or perhaps something in-between. BUT, in all cases, the movements must be done with exaggeration. They should always be done with flourish! You might initially feel silly doing so, but look how you are dressed! I 'm not sure it's possible to over-do it unless something falls over, women shriek in terror, or something breaks, or falls off as a result.
Do everything with flourish and dive into your character. There's nothing sadder than a costumed actor who is intimidated and just stands there, nearly motionless. Move, sway, slither, slink, hop & look about with motion in case you don't quite know what to do. Trust me, as you look around, once you hit the magic combination of movements, people will look at you and smile and be interested and engaged.
I'm still very, very new at this, but I think maybe, just maybe, I might be onto something here.

Is this the Culvers on 54th street next to the Aldi's? If so, I had no idea that they'd allow fursuiters in there!

I did clear it with the manager first, and they let me use their bathroom to change into and out of costume. Much of the time businesses will be more amenable if you have a specific purpose that you can state, and if you have some established credentials. It worked out fine. I haven't been back to Culvers in suit though because the Tycho Aussie colors are similar enough to the Culvers trademark colors that some customers were confused into thinking I was some kind of new Culvers mascot. Uh, no, I don't want to replace Scoopie

Awesome! I'm hoping to suit out at John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids when it heats up again. I think it'd be fun and a smaller zoo would give me a tiny bit of an idea of what to expect before I go somewhere like the Binder Park Zoo.

You're absolutely right, Tycho!
I bounce when I walk. Something to do with my feets..
Peek a boo with kids.. Always fun.. Especially scared ones. If they think you're more scared of them than they are of you, they get brave.. Next thing you know, you're getting a big hug..
It's really tricky if your character doesn't speak... Lotsa flourishing..

Great tips you gave.
If I ever have a fursuit I will remember them.
