This by me “typical-unsusual”.

The Harris’s Hawk Class fast attack craft was developed by the small ship manufacturer Windfall Industries located beyond Vulcan territory but well within Federation space. Windfall Industries primarily constructs previous generation shuttles and Oberth class science vessels and their derivatives to fill vacancies of existing ship shuttle fleets and the continuation of the “terrier of Star Fleet” Oberths.

Originally developed as Windfall Industries began to seek security contracts as an independent security in an attempt to garner additional income and for the company to fill fleet vacancies after the Dominion war and the third Klingon/Federation war for federation frontier regions and escort services and have thus far not been offered for purchase directly to Star Fleet. Originally developed with a traditional warp core in mind but deployed with an annihilation furnace instead due to budget constraints and the elimination of previous generation warp cores from their suppliers in favor of more contemporary examples as Star Fleet moved away from maintaining its own older ships , endurance was brought from months of projected deployment down to only being able to operate at full power for approximately 10 hours, or reduced warp power at 23 hours, or impulse power only for at max for 4 weeks at a time. Notable issues with using the annihilation furnace is the red/orange coloration of the warp nacelle while energized, and massive maintenance needs for the nacelles after several deployments at warp due to the impure plasmas sent through the nacelles.

While at full power it is blindingly fast at impulse, has nearly unmatchable acceleration at warp thanks to its four nacelles with a max warp of 9.1 but can maintain 9.35 for 4 hours. It can however maintain warp speeds with only two nacelles operating to conserve power and has no effect on the overall top speed as the extra nacelles are primarily for redundancy and acceleration.

One work around which found acceptance is for the craft to literally ride within a larger vessels warp field (can easily be done vessels as small as the Miranda class and it’s derivatives), often two or even three can literally “ride along” with its parent vessel with nothing more than station keeping thrusters and low power station keeping tractor beams typically used by vessels while inside space stations and overwhelm opponents with wolf pack tactics.

Perhaps the only benefit to the annihilation furnaces is the almost “instant on” energization they provide as opposed to the traditional warm up routines for warp cores, leading to a surprised adversary who was hoping for only raiding a solitary vessel that literally only registered a single warp signature on scanners.

These ships are fast, very well armed, and have quite adequate shielding featuring 4 full sized mega phasers in pairs forward and aft capable of firing in burst or beam modes with 2 full sized torpedo launchers facing forward occupying what would have previously been forward shuttle bays with a max load of 32 torpedoes and a burst fire capability of 4 per launcher. Captains need to be mindful not to exhaust their torpedo supply all at once. Torpedoes are expensive.  There are no secondary emplacements for weapons and literally no science provisions except what is necessary for the successful navigation of the vessel in space and only essential crew necessities are provisioned, captains are not exempt from this either. Typically, there are no replicators on board in deference for synthesizers as they are easier to maintain, but some captains have been known to either convert one of the two cargo transporters on board or “acquire” a replicator for the crew or their own needs, but acquiring the raw replicator material can also be problematic for this budget security craft.

The main power core and impulse deck are a single unit held in place by a massive locking ring, and is also the most armored section of the vessel. Changing out the power plant and impulse engine section is typically accomplished within 1 hour (a much faster process than refueling which can take as long as 5 hours) and as more standard warp core units become available will also be switched for them as preference.

So far only a few engagements have been observed between this craft and aggressors. In one engagement once two of these came out of hiding from behind the craft they were escorting the aggressor (a Klingon Vor’Cha class ship no longer in Klingon possession and not operated by a Klingon crew or allied races) where the opposing ship turned tail and ran only after a few volleys after the Vor’Cha mostly had its shield depleted, and another where Orion raiders gravely underestimated another pair of these ships.

Nice! Always love seeing variations of the Oberth type classes.
