Description

Windfall Industries, located on the far side of Vulcan but well with federation borders, having successfully established its own warp core manufacturing unit and with several lucrative contracts with the federation to build and operate Harris’s Hawk frigates on behalf of the Federation of Planets with direct sales to supporting member governments as allowed, approached Starfleet about adding additional ships to its catalog or for an opportunity to finish incomplete or mothballed hulls.

Starfleet, with much chagrin allowed an incomplete and mothballed Constellation class hull to be transferred to Windfall Industries for completion, with the stipulation by Starfleet to Windfall industries that any improvements that could be made… with in reason.

What arrived at the modest shipyard that was happily perpetuating Starfleet’s terriers, was indeed a mostly complete primary hull, complete nacelles and appropriate equipment that were quite period for when these were last coming off of the assembly line for the constellation class.

What was delivered within 7 months at Starfleet headquarters in earth orbit was a pristine example of the constellation class, not lacking power, redundancy, or firepower. Additional upgrades included a new primary computer core with supporting secondary processing cores throughout the hull, 3 structural integrity systems for the primary hull and nacelle assemblies. Gone was the original underpowered horizontal compact warp core with a full length core set at a “V” angle with the primary dilithium reaction chamber directly at the center, also feeding the impulse engine assemblies, and the warp nacelles at the top and bottom ends of the warp core.

The only true structural change was the flattening of the leading edge of the cross member attached to the warp nacelles, to allow for phaser mounting and additional strength of nacelle mounting.

Previous iterations of the Constellation class also were generally sent out with combat loadings of photon torpedoes to make up for the general lack of phaser coverage and power, despite being limited to firing in the forward arc only. Now it has equal torpedo coverage both forward and aft with 8 launchers total (4 Forward, 4 Aft) with each able to rapidly fire 4 torpedoes each. That is a 16 torpedo volley when necessary in either forward or aft arcs.

Additionally, the generally abysmal phaser coverage required a total reallocation of phaser placements versus the original variation of the Constellation Class. This includes 14 type 8 dual phase turret mounts between the top and bottom of the primary hull (7 top and 7 bottom), 8 additional phase turrets placed on the crossmembers mounting the warp nacelles leading and trailing edges (4 total forward and 4 aft), and the additional placement of 4 type 9 phaser emplacements fed directly from the warp core at the intersection of the vertical and horizontal cross members (2 forward and 2 aft). Not mentioned is that available power with its new warp core can allow further weapons upgrades provided that upgraded power distribution systems are allocated also, allowing the mounting of type 9 and 10 phaser turrets respectively of current placements of type 8 and 9.

Aside from offensive weapons upgrades over the original, armored doors were added to the torpedo launchers.

Sheilding was substantially upgraded to a standard where I could absorb substantially more punishment than an upgraded intrepid class starship.

Sensor systems were upgraded also to a more modern standard to as to where it could still be useful for exploration and commerce patrol duties.

Supplemental systems added were a full ship holographic crew emitters, capable of not only providing holographic personnel in open areas, but in Jefferies tubes and on the exterior of the ship for maintenance and emergency repairs. Miniaturization of certain sensor equipment and other supplemental systems has also freed up space or attachment spaces for exterior equipment as seen in this print.

Once presented to Starfleet command as proof of Windfall Industries capabilities, Starfleet took delivery of its first Constellation class in decades, immediately sending it on trials and a good will tour of minor members worlds and systems, finishing with a multi month patrol of Kazinti space and Federation/Kazinti borders. Meanwhile, after some minor negotiations, it was decided to allow Windfall Industries to work upon and build supplemental ships other than Oberth variations and shuttlecraft and let it expand its services and catalog as needed or as it saw profitable. Starfleet did transfer several other out of date or very out of date class of vessels or unfinished hulls and parts, mothballed ships or in various stages of incompleteness for their evaluation and finishing.

Very Profitable indeed.
