just play around... i've worked with photoshop AND painter... you just have to figure out what brushes, filters, etc work best for what you're trying to do.

also, just "jumping in" to a project can be disasterous and a morale killer... just scribble around and you may just find something you can work with.

that, at least, is how i do it.
